Mount Ida College?

• Small Liberal Arts college located in Newton, MA (7 miles from Boston)

• Division III athletics, compete in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) for lacrosse

• 6x NAC Champions• NCAA Tournament - 2007 vs. Middlebury,

2008 vs. Bowdoin and 2009 vs. Springfield

• Program has been built on solid defense– Back to basics– Not flashy– Communication– Quality goaltending

• Offense has roots in defense– Force defense to move their feet– Attack opponents weakness– Force defense to make decisions that create

opportunities for the offense.

Offensive and Defensive Strategy

• Keep it manageable! – Know your players and what can realistically be

expected of them• Keep an open mind– The offense or defense you know may not be the

best fit for your team• Set “side goals” for your team– GB’s, goals scored, goals against, assists,

penalties, etc.

Defensive Strategy

• Individual player strategy– Fundamental defense

• Team strategy– What are our defensive weaknesses and

how can we best hide them?– What are your defensive strengths and how can

those be leveraged against your opponent?– What are your opponent’s strengths/

weaknesses and how will we scheme based on that?

Defensive Strategy

• Communication– A common set of terminology– Communication can make a good defense great!

• Defense should dictate your opponent’s offense. – Defense should be proactive whenever possible

and not reactionary

Offensive Strategy

• Capitalize on loose ball opportunities– Win the ground ball war

• Time of possession on offense is critical– Work the clock– Settle the offense or rest– Make the defense work

• Defenses will make mistakes– Expose mistakes to create offensive

opportunity

• The offense you will run will be determined by a few factors– Individual player talent– Team chemistry– Recognizing defenses and the ability of

coaches/players to adjust accordingly• On field general
