Program Overview• Collaboration between FIRST®, Intelitek and Pitsco Education

• Concept of extending the learning from FIRST® Tech Challenge into the classroom.

• Includes a 120-hr course, robotic programing software, robot kits and prof. development.

• Project-based curriculum designed to engage students in relevant STEAM content.

• Utilizes FIRST® Tech Challenge core principles and compatible hardware.

• Delivered online via LearnMate® learning management system.

• Course is composed of 30 learning units of 4 hours each.

• Aligned to NGSS, CSTA and Common Core Math Practice standards.

• The University of IOWA and Worcester Polytechnic Institute have also contributed.

Course Overview

• Consists of 30 learning units of 4 hours each.

• Each unit has two parts:

• Core content: Provides theoretical background & knowledge

• Student Activity: Designed for groups of 3 students/robot kit with access to Coderz

programing software and a PBL worksheet for course evaluations.

• Aligned to NGSS, CSTA, Common Core and UI Engineering Problem Solving 1 course.

• Projects presented as scenarios, and are progressively less structured.

• Majority of tasks and assignments completed in groups of 3.

• Also includes built-in formative and summative evaluations.

Course Outline

• Unit #1: Living in a STEAM World: Intro to STEAM Approaches

• Project #1: Planetary Rover (Units 2-11)

• Students build a rover and explore it from various STEAM aspects.

• Project #2: Material Handling Robot (Units 12-15)

• Students follow tasks and are introduced to sensors, grippers & navigation

• Project #3: Floor Cleaning Robot (Units 16-23)

• Students will learn the entire design process from start to finish.

• Project #4: Final Project (Units 24-30)

• This project adapts all of the previous knowledge to enable a student to complete a

FIRST® challenge.

Online Learning Portal

• All content is delivered via LearnMate®, Intelitek’s custom LMS.

• Course includes embedded evaluations with built-in grade reports.

• Professional development included within the same site.

• Includes the following:

• Course completion certificate for students passing with grades of 75%+.

• Badges built into course sharable over social media.

• Forum / Message board to allow students and teachers to share questions & info.

• Portfolio / Engineering Notebook to record progress, ideas, notes and sketches.

Professional Development• 15-hours of professional development included and delivered by InspirED PD.• Develops teachers ability to teach the program using “flipped instruction”.

• Focus class time on problem solving, research, communication & teamwork. • Allows teacher to become the “facilitator” for learning.

• Delivered as a self-paced course within same LearnMate site.

• Some of the learning objectives from this course include:• Understand STEAM and how PBL can help transform learning.• Identify value of inquiry methods to enhance multidisciplinary connections.• Create curriculum units aligned to competency standards• Understand how flipped instruction can be utilized for differentiated instruction.• Discuss ways to build community in online/blended courses.

Coderz Overview

• Making robotics accessible to students everywhere.

• Innovative, easy-to-use web-based robotic programming environment.

• Provides students ability to program real and virtual robots from anywhere.

• Designed for students with varying degrees of programming experience:

• Beginners can start out in Blockly.

• Advanced users can proceed right to the object-oriented code editor. (Java)

• Includes teacher management tools & dashboards to view student stats, videos & tutorials
