Learn How To Play Piano
With Tips And Techniques
From An Expert
He most important thing when you want to learn how to play piano is to have fun.
Especially while you're learning. Once you can do that, the work will be play. That's
why we say 'Play Piano' instead of work piano.
How Much Fun Do You Want To Have?
So, now you decide what kind of fun, and how much, you want to have while you learn
how to play piano. Do you want to play simple songs quickly and easily; even if they
sound plain? Do you learn some keyboard basics like scales and chords to fill in the
sound a bit? Now for the big question! Do you take lessons and really learn to play all
kinds of songs, in many styles?
Do What You Can Right Now
However you answered, it's a good idea to do something you can play right away. Let's
say you pick a pop song you know. Something you might be able to do without a
teacher, even. Oops! There goes my job, down the drain. :)
Okay. Play the melody, any way you can, in the right hand. Try to use a natural hand
position and be as even with the time as you can be. Practice a few times. Next, in the
left hand, find one or two notes you can play that sound good with the right hand
melody note, or a few notes in a run. Try holding the notes in the left hand a bit longer
than the right hand melody notes, if the melody notes move or run. What will this be
like if you don't know music? I can only tell you that if you don't know any note names,
it's going to be a real adventure with the two hands. If you do know a few note names I
can help you a bit here with some advice.
Very Basic Harmony
If the right hand is mainly playing a C use CEG in the left. If the right hand is mainly
playing a D use GBD in the left. If the right hand is mainly playing an F use FAC in the
left hand.
To see what this might look like have a peek at this little performance. It's a little
advanced, but you can get a feel for playing with two hands by watching a few times.
Don't be afraid to ask questions afterward. There's a handy form near the bottom of the
page.
Go From Where You Are
Be calm, and do what you can. Go from where you are, and remember..........even big
shot pianists had to start somewhere. So, if you didn't understand everything, or couldn't
do much with this information, that's no big deal. I had to be taught some things several
times before I understood; and I had private lessons. If this page was too simple for you,
good! Use the comment form below and get me to create something, in text or video,
that's a little more advanced. :)
Remember to always have fun!
