Internship Details

The Internship combines your studies in the Business, Hospitality or IT Programs

(offered at our Diamond Institute division, page 21) with a placement in an English-

speaking work environment. Canadian work experience is not required to secure an

internship position, only enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. Depending on one’s

skills, and ability to adapt and perform, participants will be placed in various work

settings. This internship will give participants the opportunity to put knowledge and

skills to use in a Canadian or international company and gain valuable experience

that could lead to job placements in Canada or internationally. Internship placements

will be available in different areas across Canada.

The Internship Coordinator will meet with you to customize your resume and cover

letter and practice interview skills. We will then match you to the best suitable work

setting that is available at the time of placement. You will have the opportunity for

multiple interviews prior to placement where you can best demonstrate your knowledge

base, skill sets, and proficiency in the English language. It is important that you are

committed to performing well during interviews. A Criminal Record Check may be

High School Programs

Archer Preparatory College

Since 1997, Archer Preparatory College

has provided education at the junior

and secondary level (grades 7-12) to

local and international students in a

relaxed, friendly and supportive

atmosphere.

Mission

Archer Preparatory College is a place where the individual

student is a highly valued part of the school community and is

encouraged to share his/her talents and ideas to enhance the

spirit of diversified learning. Teacher mentors guide students

along individualized learning paths which highlight academic

and social strengths and encourage the development of the

mind, body and spirit. Graduates of Archer Preparatory College

continue on their life journey with a deep awareness of the self

and the confidence to continue towards future successes.

Philosophy of Education

Our philosophy of education is founded on the concept of Balanced Learning, and incorporates education through lived experience, technology, individualization, and communication.

Individualization is the key to success. Students are encouraged to followunique learning paths by combining different methods of learning to satisfytheir individual curiosities and to become involved in their education.

Teaching through lived experience challenges students to discover learningthrough meaningful tasks. This is achieved through a project-oriented curriculum, educational field trips, a range of co-curricular activities, and a co-operative program.

Technology has become an integral part of daily life and our classrooms areno exception. Our curriculum is enriched by the use of film, music, art, computer programs, and internet technology.

Communication is the foundation to building a secure, respectful and inclusivecommunity of learners. Administration, teachers, students and parents areconstantly involved in a strong network of communication to ensure that theneeds of all of its members are being met accordingly.

17

Page 18: Learn. Experience. Succeed!

Our Programs

 Day School Program

Students from grades 7-12 are

scheduled into courses based

on the Individualized Learning

Path created at the beginning

of each school year. Students

have the opportunity to take

courses in the Arts, Sciences, Maths, Technology, Business

Studies, Foreign Languages, Health and Physical Education,

Social Sciences, Humanities, English, Canadian and World

Studies and Guidance and Career Education. Small class sizes

ensure that all students are awarded the individual attention

they require to achieve mastery of the Ontario curriculum.

 Continuing Education Program

Students from other high

schools, as well as our own

have the opportunity to earn

credits outside of the regular

school day. Students have the

opportunity to learn in a

classroom setting or follow a self-directed study option. Courses

are taught throughout the regular school year in the evenings or

during summer semester in the daytime. In addition, students

can arrange to have private tutoring.

 Self-Directed Study Program

Self-directed study is available to our current students, home

schooled students, and students from other schools who are

interested in participating in online or correspondence courses.

Both the correspondence and online courses have been a

successful choice for students wishing to supplement their regular

learning with additional courses. Additionally, the self-directed

study allows for students to diversify their daily schedule by taking

one or two credits in this manner, rather than in a traditional

classroom setting. Students have access to the computer lab,

resource center and quiet study areas to work on their

self-directed study courses during allotted hours in their daily

schedule. Teacher mentors will be assigned to every student

who is attempting a self-directed study course for guidance,

support and evaluation of completed assignments.

 Technology Program

Technology is an important part of our curriculum, and therefore

we offer students the opportunity to purchase their own laptops

for educational use. This is the beginning phase of a project that

will soon have all students and teachers using computer

technology to communicate, conduct research, produce

assignments, write exams, and discover the endless possibilities

that start with their personal laptops. The laptops will have access

to Archer’s wireless network and internet services. An information

package will be provided to each student at registration.

 International Student Program

Since 1997, Archer Preparatory College has educated international

students from all over the world. Our administrators and educators

are experienced in welcoming students from many cultural back-

grounds, and rise to the challenge of making the adjustment to

Canadian life a smooth transition for our students. Our guidance

department will assist students in choosing the best possible

course of study to achieve their goals of studying at North

American postsecondary institutions. We offer ESL credit courses

and can arrange for one-to-one tutoring services for students who

need more assistance in their second language studies.

 Extra-Curricular Program

We encourage students to pursue extra-curricular activities to

enrich their learning experience. Students have the opportunity

to participate in the Media Club, Art Club, Drama Club, Fitness

Club, Chess Club, Student Council, and Social Action

Committee. We support students who show an interest in forming

new student associations based on their diverse interests.

High School Program

Our SchoolFacilities

Our newly-renovated facilities are wheelchair accessible and include

well-lit, air-conditioned classrooms, quiet study areas, media lab, art lab,

science lab, resource center, full-service cafeteria, and fitness centre.

Staff

The administrative staff is dedicated to helping students with any

difficulties that may arise during their studies. All of the teaching

staff have years of experience in a wide range of areas. They are

committed to ensuring that our students receive a quality education

and experience success in their academic endeavour.

Student Services

Student services include career counseling, homestay/ residence

placement and health insurance for international students,

post-secondary application process, and access to wireless internet.

Path to Post-Secondary

“I’ve studied at Archer Preparatory College for four years

and I’ve met some great people. The teachers are great

and they are very helpful.”

Archer Preparatory College aims to equip each of our graduates with

the skills, knowledge and confidence they will need to make a smooth

transition to their postsecondary studies. Our graduates demonstrate:

Leadership

Senior level students are encouraged to actively participate in the

school and its surrounding community by taking leadership roles in

the Student Council, the Social Action Committee, and Peer Tutoring.

Critical thinking

The guidance department will provide each student with assistance

in choosing the best possible post-secondary studies and will also

lead the student in career counseling.

Initiative

Students can elect to take a co-operative education credit, whereby

they are able to work with a mentor and learn firsthand the skills

required to succeed in their chosen field of work.

Knowledge

Students can begin working toward Advanced Placement credits

early in their academic career to ensure acceptance and credit trans-

fers to some of the top Canadian and international universities.

Mastery

By becoming actively involved in the creation of their Individualized

Learning Paths, students are highly motivated to achieve the goals

which they set for themselves. A high level of intrinsic motivation

stimulates the student to put more effort into their studies, resulting

in a more rewarding learning experience.

Homestay ExperienceYour Canadian Family

Stay with a carefully selected Archer homestay family to experience

Canadian culture and improve your English while living with

Canadians. Your Canadian homestay family would like to welcome

you to their home.

Exchange cultural ideas, talk about different experiences, and practice

your English at home; these are some of the advantages of doing

homestay. You’ll also join family activities - it’s a great way to do what

Canadians enjoy doing! Archer families are carefully selected and are

friendly, safe and willing to help you with your goals in Canada.

You will have a private room in your home and three meals per day.

Your home will be quite close to the school and your host family will

explain how to get around the city easily. The homestay counselor is

here to talk to you about your time with your family and will always

be available to discuss any questions that you might have. Families

and students often become life-long friends. This homestay experience

is perfect for anyone wanting to get a unique perspective of Canada.

We will make sure that you have a great time in Canada!

Other Accommodation OptionsThere are a variety of other accommodation options in Hamilton,

Toronto, Ajax and Vancouver. Contact the location of your choice

and the staff will be happy to give you the information on all the

options in their area. Alternative accommodation may include

dormitory/residence, apartment, shared accommodation, apartment

hotel, hostel, or bed and breakfast.

Student ServicesStudent Counseling

Academic guidance is available to all students to help them complete

their academic goals. Our guidance counselors can help with college

and university applications, transfers between Archer schools and

branches, official testing requirements, and any other educational needs.

Counseling is free and our multilingual staff works to ensure that

each student who attends Archer College has a positive experience.

Students are encouraged to speak to a teacher or staff member with

any concerns they may have during their stay in Canada. We are always

available to listen, explain and provide assistance for our students.

Community Volunteer Positions

Archer can assist you in finding volunteer agencies that provide

unpaid work in Canadian agencies and associations. This may

include organizing sporting events, helping elderly people, or working

at cultural events. Becoming involved in community activities is a

wonderful way to integrate into Canadian society and use your

English skills in a natural environment. While volunteering in the

community can help you fulfill graduation requirements in some

programs, such as our High School Diploma Program, it is also a

great way to meet people and experience Canada!

Medical Insurance

All students must have health insurance when studying at any Archer

College school. This may be arranged in their home country or

through the school. Health care is expensive in Canada, and

non-Canadian residents are responsible for all health expenses.

Proof of medical insurance for the duration of your stay is required

upon your arrival in Canada.

for student use for independent study.

It’s exciting to be able to see and experience life in Canada. Archer

College makes this possible by arranging activities, sports, city tours

and weekend trips for you to join. It’s a great way to meet new

friends and spend time with your teachers.

Field Trips

Your teachers will arrange local field trips to help your English,

experience Canadian culture and meet Canadians. These trips focus

on bringing your classroom learning into the local community.

Homework or other activities are often built into these trips.

After-School Activities

Throughout the week, teachers organize activities and encourage

students to join in. Participation is a great way to practice your

English and make new friends. Each school will arrange a monthly

activities calendar full of a variety of activities to include sports activities,

crafts, sightseeing, games, short travel, local community events, and

the list goes on. These activities are quite often free. Students can

even participate in the planning of the calendar by requesting specific

activities. On the last Friday afternoon of each school term, Archer

will arrange a scheduled school activity for all staff and students.

Weekend Tours

Weekend tours are many and depending on what school you attend

could be two or three-day trips to Canada most famous urban or

natural settings. Victoria, Niagara Falls, Montreal, Banff, Ottawa,

Calgary, or the 2010 Winter Olympic Host city of Whistler are a few

of the more well-known and frequented places.

Activities for High School Students

We realize the importance for our students to explore interests

beyond the classroom and remain active both physically and mentally.

Our students participate in after school clubs sponsored by teachers

such as the Chess Club and the Basketball Club. The staff at Archer

is supportive of student-sponsored activities that encourage students

to have social interaction outside of the classroom and integrate into

Canadian society.
