FOR THE LEADER Learn and Do 2 Timothy 1–4 is second letter to Timothy is the last known correspondence of Paul before his execution by Nero. Paul, awaiting trial because of his faith, sent this personal letter urging Timothy to remain faithful to the gospel. In contrast to Paul’s first letter to Timothy, this installment was more personal in nature and gave Timothy boldness in the face of hardship. While it contained useful teaching for the early church, it can also be seen as a letter that empowers Christians to be bold in their faith as they mature in knowing, loving, and obeying God. Paul began this letter by reminding Timothy where he came from and the faithful witness of his mother and grandmother. Paul affirmed Timothy, and asserted that Timothy’s faith was genuine, and because of that genuine faith, Timothy needed to be bold and rely on the power of the Holy Spirit who gives to people power, love, and sound judgment. Paul used examples of his own life, his current imprisonment, and impending death to encourage Timothy to follow Paul’s example to not be ashamed of the gospel but to preach with boldness no matter the threat. Paul said we believers need not be ashamed because we know to whom we belong and about whom we preach and teach. To make his point clear, Paul used three word pictures. Paul compared Timothy to a soldier and encouraged Timothy to live committed to God like a good soldier was committed to his commanding officer. Paul next used the imagery of an athlete who won a crown by competing according to the rules. Athletes who excelled had been through rigorous training akin to the suffering Christian leaders may face. Paul’s final analogy included imagery of a farmer who, through hard work, would reap a great harvest. Paul referred here to Timothy’s commitment to preaching the truth and the spiritual outcome to be gained. Paul closed this letter by encouraging Timothy, and us, to finish the race well as we help others learn from the Bible and know about Jesus. FOR THE LEADER

Learn and Do2 Timothy 1–4

This second letter to Timothy is the last known correspondence of Paul before his execution by Nero.

CHRIST IN CONTEXTGod planned before the beginning of time to send Jesus to rescue us from our sin. Jesus fulfilled all Scripture about Himself.

BIBLE SKILLS • Touch, hold, and turn the pages of the Bible.• Hear Bible words and phrases. Say some Bible words and repeat

short phrases.

OFF TO A GREAT START!▸▸ First impressions are important. Help each child and family feel special and welcomed at church.

▸▸ Greet each child individually and personally.

▸▸ Briefly mention to families and their preschooler an activity you have ready for children to enjoy at church.

EXPLORE THE BIBLE TEXT CONNECTION

• Paul continued his encouragement of Timothy with a second letter. This letter was much more personal in nature because Paul knew he would soon be executed. Paul wanted to share his last words with Timothy, a testament to Paul’s love for Timothy.

• Paul shared with Timothy several qualities that followers of God should have. One of the most important qualities was to be genuine.

• Paul also shared with Timothy that he should be unashamed and bold. Paul used his current circumstances as an example. Paul had been imprisoned and faced execution, but he remained faithful to the message of the gospel and continued to share the good news of Jesus.

• The admonition Paul gave to Timothy wasn’t new. When Jacob returned home to his estranged brother, he needed the same advice. Jacob approached Esau with humility and forgiveness.

BIBLE STORY NUGGETS• Paul loved Timothy and helped him.• Paul wrote a letter to Timothy.• Paul helped Timothy be a good church leader.

BABIES EXPLORE THE BIBLEBabies are sensory learners, and they are relational. They learn best when teachers engage them through conversation and play. Prepare two or three activities for babies to enjoy as they explore the Bible.

ROLL A BALLTools: Bible, beach ball or other appropriate ball for babies, Story Picture: Timothy’s Second Letter (Pack), Bible Bookmarks (Pack)

• Set the ball on top of the marked Bible. When a baby bats the ball off the Bible, pick up the Bible. Open it to 2 Timothy 3:16 and point to it. Say: “God gave us the Bible.”

• Look at the Story Picture with the baby. Comment: “See Timothy. He is reading a letter that Paul wrote. We can read the letter in our Bible.”

STICK & PEEL BIBLE PICTURESTools: Bible, pieces of felt, tape, self-adhesive hook-and-loop fasteners (rough side only), Bible and Scroll Puzzles (Pack)

• Tape squares or rectangles of felt to the wall. Attach a piece of the rough side of the self-adhesive fastener to the back of each puzzle picture.

FIND BIBLES IN A BOX

Tools: 2 or 3 Bibles, Story Picture: Timothy’s Second Letter (Pack), cardboard

box, shredded colored paper

• Fill the box with the shredded paper and hide the Bibles and Story

Timothy’s name on the page. Show the preschooler the Story Picture

and point to Timothy. Tell the Bible story.

TIMOTHY’S SECOND LETTER2 Timothy 1–4

Timothy was a leader of the church in a city named Ephesus.

Timothy’s friend Paul was in another city, Rome. Paul loved Timothy and missed him. “I want to see you, Timothy,” Paul wrote in a letter to Timothy.

Paul told Timothy he prayed for him day and night. “Don’t get discouraged, Timothy. God will help you understand everything. If you are true to Him, He will be true to you,” Paul wrote.

Paul told Timothy to tell people how much Jesus loves them and will help them. Paul said that Timothy should do what is right, be loving and kind, use kind and gentle words, and avoid arguing.

Paul said, “Keep on learning. The things your mother and grandmother taught you from the Bible can help you.” Paul said that God gave the Bible to people so they could know Him and learn how to do His work.

EXPLORATION STATIONSToddlers are on the go and ready to learn. They learn best through playful exploration and discovery. Offer three or more multisensory activities to lead young preschoolers to discover and learn Bible truths.
