After all, food impacts on almost everything. In FoodValley region the municipality of Ede is, therefore, developing an integrated food policy. Ede is pioneering when it comes to the national transition in this area. In Ede knowledge forms the unifying link. The Food Innovation Strip between Ede and Wageningen is the heart of this agri-food knowledge. It is a network of companies, institutions and government who help one another. Along the Food Innovation Strip knowledge is translated directly into practical results: improved, more sustainable and safer food production. Knowledge and innovation, therefore, form the framework to the regional policy. Which food knowledge can be found here, what does it add and how do we deploy this knowledge? These elements act as our yardstick and enable us to retain our focus. Ede is pioneering, putting into practice a clear vision for food. What is this vision? Adopting an integrated approach to food knowledge and innovation to strengthen society; both economically and at a societal level. For example, nutrition education, reducing levels of obesity, a vibrant food network for companies, regionally produced products in the supermarket and Smaak van Van Gogh [Taste of Van Gogh]. But also includes sustainability with protein transition and curbing food waste. In Ede food is the focus for people to meet and connect. With this integrated approach to food, Ede is one of the first in the Netherlands to place food high up on the agenda and to tackle this issue in an integrated manner. Consequently, Ede is the first municipality in the Netherlands to have a ‘Food’ alderman and corresponding implementation programme and takes an active part in partnerships such as, for example, Green Deal Dutch Cuisine and City Deals. Economic and societal issues from Ede’s food policy feature in the WFC and everyone can see and experience these for themselves. The WFC is going to be the foremost experience center - nationally and internationally - strengthening dialogue between the agri-food sector and society. By allowing people to experience how food is made, from farm to fork, the WFC re-connects consumers with their food. In Ede we do not have an answer to every food problem. We investigate and innovate together with our local area and other public authorities in order to find the answers to these important issues. We cannot do this alone as a municipality. To achieve this we need entrepreneurs, centers of expertise, social partners and our own residents. And we are proud of the results we are achieving together in this. In doing so, we are a forward-looking partner in a world which faces major food challenges ahead. FoodValley region wants to become Europe’s foremost agri-food center. Leading the way internationally, when it comes to knowledge and innovation in the field of healthy and sustainable food. In FoodValley business, centers of expertise such as Wageningen UR and the government work closely together in order to make this ambition a reality. The development of an icon such as the World Food Center (WFC) in Ede is a unique example of this: a site that links science, business, social stakeholders and consumers with one another and also with the Dutch agri-food sector.
