Abu Dhabi - The meeting place for world leaders

Why Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week? The United Arab Emirates has been a trusted partner since it began exporting oil in 1962. Today, the UAE is at the centre of global energy markets and is expanding its expertise into renewable energy and related issues of water scarcity and resource management—ensuring the nation’s long term sustainability.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) is a key avenue for strengthening international engagement and encouraging investment across the global renewable energy and sustainability industries. As the largest gathering on sustainability in the Middle East, ADSW reinforces the UAE’s position as a global hub for collaboration and leader in the sustainability field.

ADSW will welcome the world’s brightest, most thoughtful experts across the clean energy, water, waste and sustainability fields to the UAE. While here, they will share their fresh ideas and cutting-edge thinking with domestic and international companies, academic institutions, government departments and citizens, thereby enriching the quality of innovation, creativity and development in these fields right here in our country.

ADSW at a Glance Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) addresses a crucial need to bring together influential players—both large and small—of the renewable energy and sustainable technology industry around the globe. The challenges in these sectors are so complex that they require solutions that are both holistic and cross disciplinary. ADSW provides a unique platform to foster such discussions and solutions.

In 2014, ADSW will again bring world leaders, policy makers, thought leaders, decision makers, experts, scientists, business leaders and academics together to discuss, debate, and ultimately address the energy and sustainability challenges of the future.

Anchored by the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), the 2014 ADSW programme features a series of complementary events, conferences and exhibitions. In addition, ADSW hosts a large variety of government and public sector events that address topics ranging from policy, business and technology to project finance and employment opportunities within the sector.

Francois Hollande, President of the French RepublicSammy Dallal / Crown Prince Court of Abu Dhabi “Our energy demands will grow by more than a third by

2035. If we don’t do something, if we tackle nothing, if we don’t make an effort, then we can rest assured that disaster will befall us.” Francois Hollande, President of the French Republic

The Sustainable Living Expo is sure to be one of the most visited, with its life-sized demonstration Eco-Home and Eco-Hotel models that visitors can walk through, alongside an exhibition of renewable energy and sustainability resources ideal for use in urban settings.

The Blue Economy Summit is unique in its focus on financing and policy priorities for the sustainable development of oceans and ocean-linked communities and countries.

The Global Leaders Summit addresses the growing role of renewables in the global energy mix by bringing together leaders from business, technology, government and academia to advance collaboration and action on the most immediate and urgent priorities in ensuring long term energy security.

EcoWASTE is a new exhibition that aims to become a leading international event for sustainable waste management. Through its exhibition and seminars, EcoWASTE provides opportunities to network, exchange best practices, do business, unveil new projects and source cutting-edge technologies and solutions.

What’s new for ADSW 2014 Since its inception the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week has focused on innovation and growth, and this year is no different. A number of new initiatives continue to expand both the appeal and effectiveness of this unique week.

The community-focused Festival @Masdar City extends the spirit of ADSW to the general public. Organised by Masdar and hosted in Masdar City, the event seeks to inspire UAE residents to adopt more sustainable habits through a collection of fun-filled activities, live music and entertainment, eco-shops, food stalls and learning workshops for children – all in the sustainable surroundings of Masdar City.

The Indian Ocean Renewable Energy Ministerial Forum is the first ministerial on renewable energy in the Indian Ocean region, at which energy ministers from the 26 member and partner countries of the IORA will launch new initiatives in resource assessment, cost analysis, and capacity building. Invited representatives from the business and investment community will also provide short perspectives on sectoral development in the region.

The Renewable Energy Jobs Conference, hosted by IRENA, will look at how the renewable energy sector has become a significant employer, with the potential to provide millions of job opportunities in the coming years. The conference is open to experts, practitioners, academics and other stakeholders from the private and the public sector. It will be the first on this topic and will provide a platform for experts and policymakers to share knowledge, experiences and best practices on all aspects of renewable energy job creation.
