How many people have the opportunityto live their dream? I am one of those
very fortunate people.
It’s hard to believe that LeadershipMontgomery was just a seed of an idea 26years ago. It took 9 months to the “birth”of the first class, and I have always thoughtof LM as my baby. I could never haveimagined that it would grow up to have2,100 graduates from our 5 programs (Core,Senior, Youth, Executive and the newest,
Emerging Leaders). It has been such a joy to see our graduates serving onhundreds of boards, committees, commissions, and projects and improvingthe quality of life in this county that I love so much.
Ourgraduatesfromallwalksoflifeformadiversenetworkwithcorevaluesof integrity, passion, service, leadership, diversity and relationships. Ourvision is to be vital to Montgomery County through the transformationalleadership of our graduates. Our graduates have provided leadership tohundreds of nonprofit and public boards, committees, commissions andprojects, as well as many who serve in elected office at the State, Countyand local level. Every board needs leadership, and I wanted people to seeinformed Leadership Montgomery (LM) graduates making a differenceeverywhere we look in the County. Participant feedback clearly says thatwe have succeeded in our purpose to educate, connect, and inspire leadersto improve our community.
Our great network of 2,100 graduates supports each other’sorganizations, projects and lives. We have many graduates who have hada transformational experience in Leadership Montgomery, which makesthem even more effective leaders.
While I officially retire at the end of September, my last Celebrationof Leadership as CEO and Founder of LM is May 29. The Board ishonoring me with the Outstanding Leader Award. Further, they havecreated the Esther Newman Leadership Fund to benefit our scholarshipsand programs. Contributions will benefit future participants as we striveto build a lasting legacy.
The most important asset of LM is our people - the graduates who feelpassionately about their community, including those who serve on the LMBoard, and the amazing, dedicated staff who work tirelessly to providehigh quality programs. Founding and serving LM for the past 26 years hasbeen the most rewarding professional experience of my life. How manypeople can say they had a vision that became a reality beyond their greatestability to imagine? I am blessed to be one of those people.

n CORE PROGRAM
Creating a Community of PurposeProgram Sponsor:
Since its inception in 1989, Leadership Montgomery’s Core programhas focused its eightmonthlyday-long sessionson issues likepublic safety, transportation, education, diversity, communities, County government, arts and creativity. Sessions are enriched by presentations from a wealthof experts who share their knowledge and views on various topics.
Yet when you ask a cross-sample of classmates what was the bestthing about their LM experience, they hardly ever list suiting up ina firefighter’s gear, having a dialogue with the County Executive,or visiting an Islamic temple. Instead, each person answers withsome permutation of “getting to know my classmates” and “thefriendships I made.”
Creating a community of purpose, a network coalitionwith core valuesof integrity, leadership, passion, relationships, service and diversity, is agreat way to describe the ultimate goal for LM classes. At the end ofeach year, a new group of informed stewards joins the growing circle ofgraduates and creates connections for sharing information, ideas, andresources toward the common purpose of making Montgomery Countya better place to live and work.
After each session, a different participant gives a summary of the daywith pictures that is posted on the website. Here are the 2015 class’experiences.
OCTOBER SESSIONDespite an overcast day, there was nothing dampabout the sunny disposition of each speaker/presenter, led by our knowledgeable tour guide,Glenn Orlin (’95), Montgomery County CouncilDeputy Administrator. The passion for positivechange and cooperative spirit were felt with eachpresentation. The history of the County was sharedwith such finesse by Bill Offutt, who was bothentertaining and educational. As we traveled bybus to stops in the northern part of Upcounty -Shady Grove Road Recycling Center, Red WigglerFarm, BlackRock Center for the Arts, the MarylandSoccerPlex and Button Farm - our changing seatsafter each stop provided the opportunity to get toknow more of our classmates on a personal level. –Aj Coffee, General Manager, Pike & Rose
NOVEMBER SESSIONThe Public Safety session day started with a fascinating discussion about MontgomeryCounty Government, as Keith Levchenko (’08) explained the budget process, wheremoney is spent, how it is spent, and the competing needs of various County programsand citizens. The County 101 presentation was followed by a tour of the MontgomeryCounty Correctional Facility in Clarksburg. In many ways, the highlight of this visitwas talking to 3 inmates about their experiences, hopes and dreams. We spent theafternoon at the Public Safety Training Academy, where I heard two statements overand over again from police and firefighters, “It is the best job I ever had” “I can’t waitto get to work in the morning.” I am not sure many of us can say that about ourprofession or jobs. The biggest takeaway from the day was that our first respondersdeserve all of the respect and admiration we can give them. - Gary Altman, Attorneyat Law, Altman & Associates
DECEMBER SESSION:The session started with a powerful presentation From HigherEducation to ‘Hire’ Education by Dr. DeRionne Pollard (’12),President of Montgomery College, and Susan Bateson, Chair ofThe Universities at Shady Grove Board of Advisors. A discussionfollowed about how to nurture the next generation of thinkers andwhat society’s views of ‘acceptable’ jobs are in the 21st century. The day included a tour of Gaithersburg High School, the sessionsite. It was remarkable to note the range of ethnic diversity of thestudents. This topic was expounded upon by Brett Morales, anEnglish teacher who initiated a student led group called PODERto help more males from the Hispanic community graduate. Aspart of our homework, we had to get to the session using publictransportation. It was quite an experience and a source of pridegiven the on-time schedules and clean buses; however, wenoticed how much longer it took to get around as opposed to aquick trip in the car! - Parthiv Shah, President, eLaunchers.com
JANUARY SESSION:Liz Huntley (’10), Corporate Citizenship and Community Relations Director for MedImmune, gave us awarm welcome to the beautiful MedImmune headquarters where we first heard from Casey Anderson,Chair of the Montgomery County Planning Board. Next, Jim Dinegar, President and CEO of the GreaterWashington Board of Trade, led a rousing discussion on the amazing range of economic strengths andopportunities we enjoy in the Washington area. Steve Silverman, the former Director of the MontgomeryCounty Department of Economic Development, described the County’s efforts to retain existingemployers and deliver new ones. Chris Jones, President of the BMC Property Group, provided a heavy-hitting and eye-opening counterpoint from the business community. Next up, Josh Carin (’14), Owner ofGeppetto Catering; Michael Cassidy (’10), President and CEO of TW Perry; and Hemant Virkar (’13),President and CEO of Digital Infuzion, Inc., presented their view of the good, the bad and the ugly of doingbusiness in Montgomery County. Ellie L. Giles (’10 SLM), Director of Operations for the MontgomeryBusiness Development Corporation, discussed whether Montgomery County is competitive with otherjurisdictions. - Anne Clinton, Associate Counsel, Brookfield
Mark Cress passed the physical fitness test for firefighters at the Public Safety session

FEBRUARY SESSION:The day in the State Capital provided us with the opportunity that so few citizens have. Different than a typicalsummer day when Annapolis is filled with tourists! We learned about the legislative process in a truly “up frontand personal way”. The tour of the State House, plus meeting with the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House, and other legislators was icing on the cake. How many people can say they sawGeorge Washington’s resignation letter and stood in the same place he announced his resignation? The mostimportant lesson we learned: It is much easier than most people think to get engaged in legislation and, yes, each and every single person can make a difference! – Bill Pickhardt
MARCH SESSION:Our “Day of Diversity” provided an insightful time andspace for exploration into sometimes uncomfortableand controversial subjects like race, gender, religionand even accent that we seldom address so candidly.Open dialogue and sincere curiosity were encouragedthrough theOpenSpaceTechnology format introducedby session facilitator Eliot Pfanstiehl (Founding Boardand Facilitator). The afternoon visit to the MuslimCommunity Center provided a first-hand glimpseinto a culture and religion from a local perspective. Our discussion with their leadership revealed insightsabout their self-identity vs. how they feel the mediaportrays the Muslim faith. The closing debrief allowedmany to share how the day had impacted them.Learning more about each other’s experiences andperceptions fostered conversations that helped breakdown barriers and helped accentuate that we are infact strengthened and better together because of ourdiversity. - DeeDee Smartt Lynch - 3Circle Partners
APRIL SESSIONThe day started in the historic Washington Grove TownHall, where it was easy to imagine what the County lookedlike decades ago. An ongoing theme of the morning wasthe challenge of change for residents individually andalso for the larger community. From Washington Grove,we divided into smaller groups to tour the following 4communities: White Flint, Long Branch, Wheaton, andLincoln Park. They all have deep roots in MontgomeryCounty and are at various stages of change and growth. As a perfect counterpoint to our morning site, we reunitedat the brand new community Pike and Rose whereconstruction is going on. No discussion of communityevolution is complete without the recognition of the manynonprofits that voice the concerns of those most affectedby community change: its citizens. The discussion ledby Debbie Liverpool (’99) was particularly striking whilesitting in the modern and vibrant AMP which, we learnedfrom Eliot Pfanstiehl (Founding Board and Facilitator)Strathmore’sCEO, is agreat exampleof turninga vision intoreality through collaboration across industries. – MeredithBowers, Executive Director, Jobs Unlimited, Inc.
MAY SESSIONWe were treated to a glorious day at one of the County’s truly unique assets,Glen Echo Park. We got in touch with our creative sides, led by Bonnie Fogel(’95), Founder and Executive Director of Imagination Stage, who reminded us thatretaining confidence in our own creativity that we had way back in kindergarten is anessential part of strong leadership. We took the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking, discussed the arts experiences that have shaped us, and expressed our creativitythrough African drumming, Latin dance, Improv, and drawing. Eric Siegel (’13),Board Chair of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, helped usunderstand how the Arts and Humanities Council functions and demonstrated theimportance of the arts to economic development. Katey Boerner (’07), ExecutiveDirector led us on a tour of the park, including the gorgeous Dentzel Carousel,Adventure Theater, the Puppet Company, and other sites in the park. We ended theday by cha-cha-cha-ing, improvising, and drumming in the Bumper Cars Pavilion. It was a glorious, creative and inspiring end to our too-short season of LeadershipMontgomery. - Leslie Miles, Founder and Principal, Topside LLC

Maryland Leadership Workshops(www.mlw.org) has been conductingpeer-led programs for middle andhigh school students for over 59 years.Through workshops, hands-on activitiesand individualized action plans, studentsfrom around Maryland strengthen theirskills and develop their own potential tolead at school and in the community.
During the week-long residential MLWsummer session at Washington Collegein Chestertown, the students get to knoweach other by participating in dailyworkshops and have the opportunity tospend time on a college campus.
“Each day we spent at MLW camewith something new. We learned waysto react when entering new situations.Spending the week with a group ofunknown new people taught us greatsocial skills and let me walk awaywith some true friends that I will neverforget.” – Robert Sood.
In the fall, the young leaders learnabout the role of nonprofit organizationsand civic engagement in our societythrough the example of passionateleaders, as well as hands-on activities.

grateful than ever. Speakers such asSenator Richard Madaleno (’10) wereinspiring examples.” – Lauren Parker
“When we visited a fire station, whatstruck me was the sense of responsibility, community, and sacrifice that came withthe job. Within the system, there weredifferent levels of leadership. Each levelhad a different role and responsibility tofulfill. Listening to directions was almostas important as giving them. The lessonlearned at the fire station goes to showthat truly effective leaders not only direct
but also listen to those they are leadingand have others listen to them as well.”– Kylin Milisits.
To understand the importance ofcharitable giving, the students areintroduced to nonprofit organizationsin Montgomery County that provideservices to populations or causes thestudents feel passionate about. After thepresentations from the nonprofits, theydecide to award a generous donationof $1,000 to the organization they feelis most deserving. The funds comefrom the Roberta F. and Lawrence A.
Shulman Youth Leadership Endowment.Setting the criteria and awarding themoney is always a challenging task forthe students.
After graduation, the class membersembark on new adventures, some ofthem continuing high school, some goingon to college. They’ll always rememberwhat they learned about themselves andthe leadership skills they gained.
“The conclusion of this programdoesn’t mean that we have endedour education in leadership, or thatwe know all there is to be a leader. This is just a beginning of a lifelonglesson in leadership, Youth LeadershipMontgomery has given us valuable toolsto become leaders.”- Orlando Galleguillos

OutstandingLeader Award
By Eliot PfanstiehlCEO, Strathmore
For a woman who, for the lastquarter century has been the veryface of Leadership Montgomery, thetruth was Esther Newman had noidea what she was building when shebegan. Such is the nature of manybold leaders - they don’t always knowthe details of where they are going, but they do need to gather passionatepeople around them who, together, can make it happen. And that is whatEsther did best. She was a gatherer ofpeople. Of people who cared.
And while she is often creditedwith courageously forging a broad-based institution of new communityconnections, capable of crossingexisting political and geographicboundaries, she never quite knewwhere it would end up. For over26 years, she has fearlessly entrustedhundreds of people she encounteredalong the way to mold a new kindof organization which would changethe shape of community relations in acountyofamillionpeople.Fortunately,Esther could engage people like fewothers. It was her talent and her gift. Itwill be her lasting legacy.
From her early professionalleadership experiences with the Family
Life Center of Montgomery County,Montgomery General Hospital, the YWCA and the MontgomeryCounty Chamber of Commerce,Esther discovered in 1988 that therewas a new community leadershipprogram paradigm spreading acrossthe country, magically connectingeveryday citizens to collaborativelyseek nonpartisan changes at the grassroots level. In 1989, she and the lateLarry Pignone of UnitedWay gatheredprominent business and civic leadersto launch Leadership Montgomery. After drafting Eliot Pfanstiehl as herfacilitator, she constructed the nine-month curriculum of retreats, speakersand site visits which still characterizethe program today. With an initialstaff of herself, she built, recruitedparticipants, managed, fundraisedand expanded the program usingher unique skills as an entrepreneur, but one dedicated to working forcommunity good, instead of forindividual wealth.
Eventually, she added to the Coreprogram several other programs.Senior Leadership Montgomery,Youth Leadership Montgomery,Inside Montgomery ExecutiveProgram and the latest, EmergingLeaders, which now collectively boastover 2,100 graduates. Together, thesegraduates are credited with hundreds
of success stories touching almostevery nonprofit organization in theCounty. Due to Esther’s vision andhard work, those graduates went outempowered, connected and supportedto succeed at their own individualcommunity work. As she often said,“Leadership Montgomery does nottake a stand on issues; rather, weexpect our members to think and actfor themselves.”But theywill thinkandact more compassionately, globallyand efficiently after experiencing thefull LM program. She often talkedabout “her family” of graduates, whoare now spread across the County andnation, with the same pride a motheruses to describe the accomplishmentsof her offspring. And they, in turn, often confided in her on everythingfrom job seeking to resource buildingto managing their own personal lifecrises. Esther became a fixed point intheir solar systems and a reassuringpresence for many.
Over the years, Esther raised morethan $5M dollars in contributions andscholarships and leveraged another$3M donated in-kind services. She washonored by the Washington BusinessJournal Women Who Mean Business(2014), Jewish Women International(2011), The Daily Record Top 100Maryland Women (2010), as wellas being honored by The Gazette ofBusiness and Politics, the Corporate
VolunteerCouncil andtheMontgomeryCounty Chamber of Commerce withtheir Community Service Award. Sheeven volunteered beyond her workdayfor causes including Jubilee, theExecutiveBall for theArts, theWomen’sBreast Cancer Golf Tournament, and she served as President of theMontgomery College Alumni Board. She was named Outstanding Alumnusof the Year in 2000 and awarded anHonorary Associate of Arts in PublicService in 2002.
The story of Esther Newman iswritten in the lives of her graduates, her loving family, and her greatercommunity. Those who seek tocollaborate more than compete, tocelebrate more than criticize, andto connect rather than collide withadversaries, all have Esther to thankfor making that a way of life inMontgomery County, Maryland. Fora woman who didn’t know if herdream would work, it is now clear, itdid. And it will continue far beyondher tenure.
For this legacy of leadership, andon behalf of the Board of Directorsand entire membership of LeadershipMontgomery, Esther Newman isour “Outstanding Leader of theYear for 2015.”
