Staff Trip to Guru Nanak Nishkam Sevak Jatha Gurudwara

Dates for your diary

On Saturday, some of the staff from Nishkam

High school enjoyed a trip to the Gurudwara

on Soho Road. This included time spent in the

prayer hall. Mr Dhanda informed staff about

the Sikh ethos, appreciating the community

feel of the kitchens which provided free

langar to all as sewa. A tour of the Gudwara

also included a trip to the top, to marvel at

the beauty of the dome and a quick look at

a wedding gathering. At the end of the visit,

staff sat together with the community to enjoy

the wonderful langar.

Dear parents/guardians,

As the October break approaches, it is time to take stock of the very busy half-term

we have had, including significant sporting wins for our netball and football teams,

beautiful plaques for our civic society winners, fantastic figures for attendance (187

pupils with 100% attendance this half term), trips to our local church and to see the

new Suffragette film and our new Facebook page (reaching over 2700 people at

https://www.facebook.com/nishkamhighschool). We've welcomed new staff and

subjects, including Food Technology and Photography, Journalism, Chess and

Zumba through our enrichment offer and we've started our first ever GCSE cours-

es. Students in Year 10 have risen tremendously to meet the challenge and have

embraced the broad and balanced curriculum on offer.

It is timely therefore to return to our Patron's vision: “Every child is precious, deserves

to have dignity, to experience love, to develop inner confidence in being part of

the wider world. Every child needs good nourishment, for the body, the mind and

also for that spark of the spirit that shines within. These are the foundations for suc-

cessful learning; we fail children if we don’t provide these.” It is this vision up-

on which the school has been built. This Saturday, our entire staff visited our Gurud-

wara to learn more about our Sikh ethos and the community spirit which pervades

every aspect of what we do. We returned to school on Saturday renewed

with energy and with spirit, ready to humbly try to bring the patron's vision to life. We

thank you for your continued support of our school and our vision.

We wish you all an enjoyable half-term break.

Consultation – Road Safety Stategy

Birmingham City Council has developed a new Road Safety Strategy with support

from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. They are keen to gather

views on their plans and are asking people to respond to their consultation which

is open until Friday 23rd October. You can find out more and have your say at

www.birmingham.gov.uk/roadsafetystrategy.

Your feedback is important as these strategies effect all road users but in

particular the council are seeking opinions from parents and carers.

Drama October half term activities

There is a lot to do during school holidays at the theatres in

Stratford Upon Avon. You and your family have the

opportunity to participate in workshops and demonstrations on:

Henry V

Blood, Guts and Gore

Peter Pan

Speaking Shakespeare

Stage fighting workshops

Writing workshops

Voice skills workshops

These activities are great opportunities for students, especially those

who are interested in studying GCSE Drama to develop their acting

skills and become even more familiar with the works of William

Shakespeare. If you are interested, for more details please visit

http://www.rsc.org.uk/whats-on/events/october-half-term-

activities.aspx

On Monday evening, Year 10 pupils went to the Electric Cine-

ma to watch the film ‘Suffragette’ which is about women cam-

paigning for the right to vote and fighting for women to be

equal to men. This film was based on a true story which helped

the Year 10 pupils understand what the suffragettes really did

and how they did it as we are currently studying this topic in

GCSE History.

Thanks to Mrs Butler who organised the trip and encouraged us

to watch this brilliant film. The film brought tears to my eyes and

I’m happy that I watched it with class mates and teachers. Also

thanks to Mr Blackburn and Miss Singh who volunteered their

personal time to help Mrs Butler supervise us.

Girls football results

On Thursday 15th Octo-

ber, the Year 7 and 8 girls’

football A and B teams

took part in their first foot-

ball matches of the year

against Starbank Acade-

my. It was brilliant to wel-

come so many new play-

ers into the teams, with football becoming very popular amongst

the girls. Also, this year the teams have been combined 7 and 8

teams as opposed to separate year groups to offer more experi-

ence and strength in both teams. This tactical decision proved to be

worthwhile as the results from the evening were fantastic! Excellent

goalkeeping from Nimratpall Kullar, Anmol Virdi, Kimran Shergill and

Farida Bakari ensured that the visitors struggled to get on the score

sheet. Particular mention must go to Manisha Bansal (Year 8) and

Kajol Korotania (Year 7) for the goals that they both scored for each

of their teams. There was also some great supporting play shown

from Gurpreet Ubhi (Year 7) and Nimrta Amrik (Year 7). Both teams

worked extremely hard and all girls should be very proud of their

efforts both on Thursday and at training after-school. Thursday was

tremendous and Miss Lloyd is hoping that the teams can build on

this achievement in the next round of matches, which will be the

football tournaments in November.

School uniform reminder

A reminder that all uniform should be

clearly labelled with:

child's name and form.

If Parents have any spare uniform items

that they wish to donate to the school

all contributions would be welcome

Mobile phones and other devices

A short reminder to parents that currently all pupils are asked to

place their devices in a plastic wallet at the start of a school day.

Those wallets reside in a form box until the end of the school day

when they are returned.

For pupils in years 7-10 there is currently no curriculum requirement

for them to bring phones in to school at all. The school, therefore,

does not accept any liability for loss or damage to such goods that

might occur during the school week. Furthermore, police advice is

that such expensive equipment might make pupils vulnerable

during the journey to and from school.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Food Tech lesson serves up a treat Our new Food Technology lessons are going

down a treat with our students. Here is what

one student had to say about his lesson with Mrs

Sidhu:

"Food tech is so much fun! We made a pasta

salad; you can be very creative with your reci-

pe but you have to remember to check with

Miss to see if the flavours blend together. One

of the best lessons this school has."
