Leadership Lessons From the Flightline

There are few jobs as stressful as ensuring airplanes fly safely, unless it's ensuring that explosives don't go

off when they aren't supposed to. Bob Mason has successfully led organizations that do both.

He’s learned some truths about leadership that should be common knowledge, but so often are not.

- People are looking for good leadership. Skilled, motivated people still need and want someone to provide a leadership function.

Aircraft mechanics are highly skilled and able to work independently, but they still want someone to support them and handle the bigger issues.

- People like to feel special. The most successful organizations are the ones that do that.

The F-117 and combat rescue were two units that demonstrated how a feeling of being special contributed to a high level of success.

- Trouble starts when leaders think they’re the smartest person in the room.

Leading munitions technicians when you’re not a munitions expert will quickly teach you this lesson.

- Excellence starts from the bottom up, not from the top down. The boss can talk about it, but that doesn’t make it happen.

There was always talk about excellence but it was only when the lower level practiced it that excellence really happened.

- Employees aren’t engaged because leaders don’t ask them to be. If workers don’t know how what they do makes the organization successful, why should they put in any additional. It also helps if workers know their leaders understand what that worker contributes and why they’re important.

In one unit, the workers had never had anyone explain how they contributed and why what they did was important. Once they began to understand that, the whole organization worked better.

- Organizations that have formal leadership development programs will be more successful than those that don’t. Supervisors and managers who understand the basics of leadership will pull an organization through the hard times.

The military sometimes sends people on very difficult missions with other people they haven’t worked with. The military’s common, and very thorough leadership development program makes that work.

- Leaders must get out with the troops. They must know who you are and you must know who they are.

Leaders who made it a point to get out on the flightline and visit the shops were more successful because they had a much better understanding of their troops and what they did.
