    Authority of Power

    The Federal Constitution of Malaysia dividesthe Power into Executive, Legislative, andJudiciary authority.

    Executive - refers to the power to govern thecountry headed by the Prime as the Chief

    Executive and the head of the Government. The Prime Minister, Cabinet and the

    government administrative machinery aregiven the task of carrying out executive

    functions.

    Authority of Power (Cont. )

    Legislative - is in the hands of the Parliament,

    which comprises the Senate and House of

    Representatives .

    Its functions as a law maker and has the

    authority to raise taxes and authorize

    expenditure.

    The Senate comprises 69 members, and 40

    are appointed by the King , from among

    citizens believed to possess excellent records

    in public services, businesses, trade and

    commerce, have contributed much to the

    benefit of the public or are representatives ofethnic or minority groups.

    The House of Representatives consists of 222elected members (2008 GE) who must be 21

    years old and above.

    Authority of Power (Cont. )

    Judiciary - the judiciary is given the

    authority to hear and determine criminal

    matters, interpret the legality of anylegislative and executive acts.

    The Head of the Judiciary is the LordPresident of the Federal Court, which is

    the highest court in Malaysia.
