Episode 3: So Selfish! 2

Episode 3:So Selfish!

THEME: Mr. Bon-Hovis is only interested in his own well-being!

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Keeping everything to ourselves will not make us happier people. 2. Sometimes it can seem that the more we have, the better it will be for us. But, in

fact, there is a much deeper satisfaction in giving and sharing. 3. Making other people happy and being kind are great ways to serve God, and that

is the place where we will find real joy.

*TOP TIP* During the show there are a couple of references to being greedy with food. It’s important to note that Mr. Bon-Hovis wants to keep it and eat it all because he’sbeing selfish. This show is not about eating disorders in any way.

PREPARATION: For this session you will need stiff paper or light card (one sheet perchild), felt-tipped pens, scissors, and ordinary plain party balloons (plan for the odd pop!). Print off the line drawings at the back of this guide. You may also need a large sheet ofposterboard for the optional coloring activity. For the Bird Feeder activity you will needgood quality bird seed, raisins, and grated cheese (optional), suet or lard, small containersfor pots, string, mixing bowl, scissors, and tooth picks. Be aware that products produced forbirds are not fit for human consumption. Also be aware of children with nut allergies han-dling seeds which may contain nuts or are produced in a factory that probably handles nuts.

*TOP TIP* During the Arty Crafty Time activity it may be helpful for you to use a per-manent marker on the balloons for longer lasting results. Consider bringing one alongand helping the children with this part.

Episode 3: So Selfish! 3

DVD VIEWING

Introduction to today’s show: Explain to the children that Mr. Bon-Hovis is being verykind and helping Mrs. Bosanti-Crayco today. Tell them he is going to make a big silly mis-take, though, and they should watch closely and see if they can spot where he goes wrong!

Play the DVD until 10:25, just as Jovis is about to read the story.

GUIDED DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

Use these questions to share and explore the show with your children. Don’t worry toomuch about the learning outcomes at this point, but keep them in mind so as not to straytoo far from the message and confuse the issue. Feel free to put your own questions inhere, too:

• What did Jovis say the Creation Crew had started doing?• What’s the difference between sweets and candy?• What did he try to use to whisk the cake mixture with?• What did Mrs. Bosanti-Crayco need?• Who was it for, and does that sound important?• What did Jovis say when Booky Worm called him over?• What were Betsy, Bella, and Flossie doing?• Why do you think their game worked nicely?• What did they do with the candy?• What would you sell in your shop?

Please note, these questions are only suggestions. Feel free to explore the show in yourown way and with your own style.

*TOP TIP* Why not enhance the teaching by suggesting that the children make their owncandy shop with their friends or family at home? It will be a great opportunity to practicebeing kind!

Play the DVD until 20:31 when the song finishes.

Story Time Teacher’s notes: Some tricky ideas are covered here. It’s worth noting that the main issueswe’re dealing with aren’t the theft or the eating of candy, but that Piggy Tubster and JovisBon-Hovis both want to keep everything for themselves. Jovis didn’t see any point in shar-ing—it simply wasn’t an issue—and Piggy Tubster felt that his happiness would be enhancedin direct relation to the quantity of desirable things he had for himself.

This story illustrates the consequences of selfishness, loss of friends, loss of respect, theemptiness, and lack of the satisfaction anticipated. Importantly, the alternative is joyfully discovered, as a repentant piggy finds happiness in sharing and being kind.

GUIDED DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

• What did Dora Mouse say to Jovis Bon-Hovis?• Do you think Jovis knew that he was a bit like Piggy Tubster?• Are there any times when you behave badly but don’t realize it at the time?

When?• Does it make you upset when people tell you? Why?• What did Jovis decide to do to make it right?• Why was it important to make another cake?• What was the song about?• What was Mr. Bon-Hovis doing?• Why was he chasing Stripy Monkey?• Apart from cake and candy, what else did Jovis Bon-Hovis want to keep for

himself?

Play the DVD until the end.

OPEN DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

At the end of the show, use this time to chat about the general issues covered and whatthey mean. Moving away from what happened specifically in the show, try to discusshow we might be caring and sharing in our own lives.

*TOP TIP* Why not share something yourself? Could you perhaps bring in a nice boxof chocolates which will seem special? Or maybe a bag of marbles to share as a littlegift?

What conclusions should we be drawing from the show today?

• How does it help us understand God and who He wants us to be?• Can you think of any ways you could be more sharing?• Can you think of any ways you could be more caring?• Can you remember a time when you shared anything with somebody else? A toy,

a chair, a blanket, a sandwich?• How did that make you feel?• Why is it good to be kind and share?

ARTY CRAFTY TIME ACTIVITY

*TOP TIP* If you have a little more time and want to color or decorate your characters,it will be much easier to do so before cutting them out.

A balloon pump will be very helpful if you are workingwith children who all want to try and blow up the balloonsthemselves!

Cue the DVD to the beginning of Arty Crafty Time andplay and pause along with Mr. Bon-Hovis as you workthrough your own projects. Everybody should find themvery simple to follow. Remind the children that Mr. Bon-Hovis thought it would be fun to have the cake for himself, but in the end he just got a tummy ache!

SONG TIME WITH DANCE ACTIVITY

Select the song from the DVD menu and play.

Following the leader (you!) as they do the actions is great fun for the kids. Just play thesong and read along below, doing the actions as they are written. Ask the kids to copyyou! Don’t worry about looking silly! Kids just love to dance and move about. Theywill just think it’s great fun and will respond much better if you lead with energy.

Why not consider practicing the song over a few sessions and doing a performance at thefront of your church?

Younger children can follow the dancing; older children may enjoy following the wordson-screen and singing along.

*TOP TIP* After running through the song once or twice, why not choose one or two ofyour more outgoing children to lead the others in a ‘Simon Says’ dance! The individualleads the dance, but the others only join in the move when ‘Jovis Says’!

Episode 3: So Selfish! 7

Here are the lyrics with actions and performance suggestions so that you can facethe group:

(Note about the chasing: If you don’t want crazy, screaming kids, do a slow-motionstomp chase.)

Burp, burp, who ate all the cake? (biting a piece of cake from each hand in turn)You know the cake that I didn’t help you make! (mixing in a big bowl)Moan, groan, my tummy’s twice the size, (holding and rubbing our aching tummies)Groan, moan, ‘cause I ate all the pies! (arms outstretched, then gathering in close)

I don’t want to share ‘cause it’s less for me, (teacher runs away and children chase after!)Go and get your own, these are my sweeties! (continue as above)If you don’t give me yours, I won’t be your friend! (teacher turns, chases children, they run away!)Don’t people like that just drive you round the bend? (continue)

You can’t touch these toys, these toys are mine! (reaching out, then alternate hands in pockets)And those toys are mine, in fact, all the toys are mine! SCRIPTURE TIME SHARED STUDY

Remind the children that Mr. Bon-Hovis opened his Bible up, and suggest it might beexciting to see just what Mr. Bon-Hovis saw!

*TOP TIP* Why not make up your own silly story first and pretend to check if it’s inthe Bible, just like Jovis Bon-Hovis did?

Luke 3:10-12 10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts shouldshare with the one who has none, and anyone who hasfood should do the same.”12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,”they asked, “what should we do?”

EXTRA REFERENCES FOR LONGER STUDY:

Hebrews 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasingto God.”

Explanation for little ones: It makes God happy when we are kind and generous. That’sthe way He created us to be.

Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, run-ning over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measuredback to you.”

Explanation for little ones: If we are kind and sharing, God will reward us. God will begenerous with us in the same way we are generous with other people.

Scripture Time Questions for discussion:

• What sort of people make God happy?• What kind of person do you want to be?• Do you think you can choose what kind of person you are?• What did God make us to be?• What should we do if we see somebody who needs what we have?• Do you think it’s going to be easy to share things that you’d rather keep for yourself?• Should we do it anyway?

COLORING FROM STORY TIMEWhy not do things a bit differently? For a longer session, cut out the drawings at theback of this guide and glue them onto one big sheet for everybody to color together!

ACTIVITY: BIRD FEEDERS!

*TOP TIP* Instead of doing one each, why not make the bird feeders using a productionline system for a great fun group activity? Put your tables in a line and have the kidstake turns doing each part of the production, just like a real factory!

This is a lovely activity which shows children a simple and clear way of being a kindand caring person. Feeding the birds takes time and effort but is very rewarding for thelife and color it will bring to your garden, window, or neighborhood.

1. Take out your lard or suet before the start of the session to allow it to warm toroom temperature, but do not melt it!

2. Rolling up sleeves and getting nice and messy, use the large mixing bowl tosquish together the fat and the seeds. Everyone will want to have a go at this, soconsider using a few bowls for the production.

3. Poke holes into the pots and thread your string through, leaving enough outsideto tie a knot or loop in.

4. Inside the pot, tie half a toothpick to the string to stop it pulling back through.5. Take your mixture and fill to the top with the yummy stuff!6. Put your pots in the refrigerator to solidify.7. Hang outside where you hope to attract some birds!

GAME-TIME ACTIVITY: EMOTIONAL CHARADES

Kids can find it very difficult to read faces and understand the needs of others.Fortunately this awareness can be taught and learned. Encourage children to practicefiguring out how others are feeling and considering what they might need without beingtold.

Emotional charades is a simple game. Ask the children to take turns in coming to thefront and acting out an emotion. The person who gets it right will go next. Unlike normalcharades, you can use sounds, but not words!

You may need to feed the kids some ideas. Why not try fear, anger, sadness, joy, disgust, surprise, pity, envy, happiness, amusement, relaxation, confusion, love, wonder...

Episode 3: So Selfish! 10

*TOP TIP* Tell the kids they can carry on this game on the drive home. Ask them tolook out of the car window or as they walk, and see if they can work out the emotions ofthe people they pass by.

In conclusion:

God made us to be kind and caring people. Behaving the way God meant us to is agreat way of staying close to Him.

Pray together to finish:

Dear Lord, we pray that you will show us the times and places where there is an opportu-nity to be kind and thoughtful. We pray that you will teach us to recognize andunderstand the needs of the people around us, and to help them when they need us. Amen.
