OSA student employee graduates as a double major

Karla Patricia Govea, former student employee for the Office of Student Affairs, graduated on Saturday May 18, 2013. As a double major, Govea received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. As an undergraduate, Govea had the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid, Spain in Summer 2011 where she studied Sociology. She was also an active member of Psi Chi, an international honor society in Psychology. Govea will be starting her Masters in Clinical Psychology in the Fall 2013 semester. Best of luck to our former student employee in all of her future endeavors. Congratulations, The Office of Student Affairs!

ENACTUS (continued) Sam Walton Step Up to Small Businesses Dinner where the members had a chance to meet over 30 other ENACTUS groups to discuss the projects their teams had been working on. After the conclusion of the dinner, ENACTUS TAMIU practiced for several hours for their presentation the following day. From the opening round, one finalist from each league is chosen to advance to one of the four semi-final round leagues. Out of these semi-finalists, one team from each league qualifies to compete in the prominent final round of competition. While ENACTUS TAMIU presented a total of six projects in less than 17 minutes and received only positive feedback from the judges and audience, they were not one of the teams chosen to advance to the semi-finals, making their trip to Nationals short-lived. Nonetheless, the team has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time, helping local businesses increase their revenues and productivity. President Daniel Jimenez is eager for the new school year to start as ENACTUS TAMIU plans on undertaking new and improved projects. “Most of our projects are done on our own, without the help of partnerships. The other schools we competed against had several partnership projects, which increased their chances at advancing further at Nationals. Our goal this year is to help fund our projects through partnerships while creating sustainability,” stated Jimenez.

Orientation leaders count down the days to Dusty Camp I

With only nine days left until Dusty Camp Session I, the 2013 Orientation Leaders are working harder than ever. This dedicated group of 20 has been practicing three times a week for two-three hours per day perfecting dance routines, skits, and educational presentations about the many services that the University has to offer to incoming freshman.

In addition to practicing for Dusty Camp, numerous orientation leaders applied for the 2013 Orientation Coordinator positions that the Office of Student Affairs hires each summer in order to organize and prepare for upcoming orientations. Out of the 20 orientation leaders, nine applied and only four were chosen. After much thought and evaluation, Student Orientation and Involvement Coordinator, Adrianne Rocha-Perez chose the following students for the 2013 Orientation Coordinator positions: Franky Adame, Jazmin Gibeaut, Mara Schaffler, and Angela Vela. The Office of Student Affairs is looking forward to working with such a great group of students. Together we hope to host an excellent orientation experience for first time freshmen as well as recruit new leaders who have a passion for making a difference at TAMIU.

All For Life raises $1,000+ at zumba for life event

On Saturday May 25, 2013, student organization All For Life hosted their first Zumba For Life fundraiser at the Mary Help of Christians’ School Gymnasium. This event brought in over 100 participants, including a Laredo native student from Texas A&M College Station who supported this cause by representing their own organization, Pro-Life Aggies.

All For Life is dedicated to enhancing respect for and perseverance of innocent life from conception to natural death. To do so, members engage in informational campaigns and community service events and activities. Members of the organization raised $1,502 through Zumba For Life. With the money, they plan on bringing a Pro-life guest speaker to Texas A&M International University to educate the community about the Pro-Life cause and what it stands for. All For Life President, Valerie Lopez, was pleased with the turn out and expressed why the event was so important. “The best and most important aspect of this event was that we were able to spread our message about respecting and protecting life at all stages. Some people even pledged to call a Texas Representative to oppose Senate Bill 303, which will give the government the right to place "Do Not Resuscitate" orders on sickly children and elderly who are on life support. It was great to see so many people wanting to become further involved in our cause!”

A special thanks goes out to Principal Marie Gannon of Mary Help of Christians School for allowing the organization to host the event at their gymnasium as well as to the seven Zumba instructors who made the event a great success: Ervin Delgado, Denisse Montalvo, Ana Rodriguez, Lorena Maldonado, Arlene Juarez, Rolando Medrano, & Martin Gallegos.

Shifts will be Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The first shift will occur from 8:30 – 11 a.m. and the second will occur from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Volunteers are encouraged to stay for both shifts.
