Diners are encouraged to “make the feast their own” with Urban Eat’s Build-A-Better Dish concept, which allows guests to mix and match their entrees and sides. No of- fence Raising Cane’s. With the news of Gatlin’s BBQ’s move from 1221 West 19th Street to a 4,200 square foot space in the new center at 3510 Ella Blvd. – and anticipated open- ing of the Berry Hill at Ella and 43rd Street by mid-Janu- ary – the area has been abuzz with anticipation. NewQuest Properties leas- ing agent Danny McCormack, and St. Pius graduate, said he knows that area residents are excited about Gatlin’s because he has been getting calls from them. McCormack said that he had been talking with them since last August but the deal was just finalized last week. “They liked the location, the new construction, and the lack of restaurants in the immediate area,” said McCor- mack, who noted that Gatlin’s signed a five year lease. The other half of the 8,500 square foot space is not offi- cially spoken for yet. Although it’s not precluded from being a restaurant too, McCormack said that they are in talks with a retailer for the spot. Just down the street at 1201 W. 43rd, Park Blair is ready to finally open the doors to his second Berryhill franchise. His first is on East 11th street in the Heights. The Ella loca- tion used to be the Oak Forest Mobil station. “We’ll be open by mid-Jan- uary at the latest if we don’t run into anything else,” Blair said. To say that it’s been a bumpy road to the opening would not be an understate- ment. Blair said that there were unresolved lawsuits about the property that pre- dated his purchase of the building, as well as easement issues and environmental hur- dles such as the removal of the gas tanks from the under the ground that needed to be addressed. Although he’s owned the property since 2013, Blair said he’s had his eye on it for quite a while. He lived in the area before he moved to the Heights three years ago. “I knew the area was gen- trifying and had seen the growth,” Blair said. “We still have a lot of friends there. The demographics are there now. It was a good location six years ago. I wish I’d gotten it then.” Another person who is fa- miliar with the changing de- mographics of the neighbor- hood is Dan Braun with Braun Enterprises. Braun Enterpris- es acquired Ella Plaza, next to the soon-to-be Gatlin’s last spring, and is getting ready to give the center a major make- over. Braun said that construc- tion will be complete by the end of the second quarter of 2015. NewQuest Properties is also doing the third party leas- ing for the new and improved plaza. “We want to have an identi- ty,” said Braun, who notes that they’ve turned a lot of people down in an effort to acquire tenants that the neighborhood would value. Although a lot is still in flux, there are two restaurants that have signed leases. Longtime tenant the Golden Wok is stay- ing, but will move to a differ- ent location within the center. They’re also rebranding a bit and will continue to offer take out as well as sushi. Toasted, a bagel shop/ breakfast restaurant owned by a family with over ten years’ experience in the ba- gel business in Louisiana, is also moving in which will be good news to breakfast lov- ers in the GOOF. Not signed, but in the works are a take-out pizza place and a “very cool” barbershop with several other locations. The biggest news will be the tenant on the corner which will take over the spot of the Golden Wok. Braun said they are in talks with four or five different restaurants, several of whom already have an en- thusiastic Houston following. “We want to cater to the neighborhood,” said Braun. A missing piece of the pie will be the restaurant that takes the place of the former That Pizza Place at 3322 Ella Blvd. Purchased by the Liber- ty Kitchen group in 2014, the owners announced at that time that construction was soon to begin on Surfing Cowboys, a restaurant and music venue. Whether the delay is permit- ting related, or just a result of a lot of irons in the fire – see Nibbles for more on their new partnership with The EL’s Ken Bridge – it’s pretty clear that not much is happening, yet. “We went in that neighbor- hood because it’s up and com- ing [with all the] young fami- lies,” said owner Lee Ellis. Of course, with all the new options on the horizon, people will have their old favorites. El Rey will still be raking it in and no one is giving up on Shipley Do-Nuts. Even the existing businesses like Houston Pa- nini & Provisions at West 34th Street right by Ella are looking forward to the new non-fast food blood. “I think it’s fantastic,” said Garden Oaks resident and Panini & Provisions co-owner David Colby, who also told The Leader that they received permitting this week to be certified as a full-fledged res- taurant. Colby also said that they’ll soon be adding a side patio and garden on the side of their building that faces Ella. “Anything that’s out of the ordinary – as residents, that’s what we’re all looking for.” 237 W. 19th. Rainbow Lodge is not afraid to go out on a culinary limb with their meats. From their wild game mixed grill includ-ing venison, lamb, Texas quail and wild boar to their smoked duck and Andouille sausage gumbo to the elk chops, owner Donnette Hansen pulls out all the stops for adventurous car-nivores.

For New Year’s Eve, they’re doing a four course, $79 per person dinner starting at 5 p.m. They’re also offering a New Year’s Day Brunch with selections like southern fried venison cutlets and braised short rib “Benedict.”

“Our Log Cabin restaurant is just made for the holidays,” said Hansen. “The decorations are up and the egg nog is flow-ing.”

For home cooks, she said she likes both roasted duck and whole roasted beef ten-derloins during the holiday.

“Both are extremely easy to prepare,” she said. “The inter-net is a wonderful resource for very user friendly recipes for both of these meats.”

To save you the trouble, here are two recipes below, both from Allrecipies.com. Happy cooking.

Beef Tenderloin “This three ingredient beef

We’re coming to the end of the year and with the end of the year we look back on the year’s accomplishments, struggles and celebrate everything in-between. New Year’s Eve is our last hurrah of the year, and rightfully so. You have successfully made it through another year of being a human being making the daily motions through life and if you found a smidge of clarity, prosperity or any other form of happiness, it’s time to celebrate. Whether you’re the single girl looking for her Bridg-et Jones NYE kiss or heading out with your family and friends, here’s a few places in the area to consider.

NYE in the Heights CrispOver on Bevis Street, Crisp invites you

to ring in the new year in the Heights. The wine bar will open their doors starting at 5 p.m., and will have live music starting at 8 p.m. from the acoustic duo Mike & Mike until midnight. A champagne toast and countdown to the ball drop will take place at midnight. Space is limited, so make your reservation with [email protected] or call 832-247-1924. Crisp is located at 2220 Bevis Street 77008.

Harold’s If you’re looking for the rooftop atmo-

sphere to ring in the new year, but not wanting to leave the ‘hood, Harold’s has the perfect terrace for you. From the food menu, Chef Antoine Ware is offering a spe-cial menu for those looking to dine-in. Be sure to make your reservation early! From the bar, Harold’s has you covered if you’re in the mood for some bubbles. Harold’s will be offering specialty champagne cock-tails or choose from their fine wines and cocktail menu. If you’re ordering from the

cocktail menu, try the Apricot Manhattan and ask for Arthur to make it. Harold’s is located at 350 W. 19th Street 77008.

CottonwoodIf live music on one of Houston’s best

patios is on your list for NYE, Cottonwood might be the place for you. Starting at 9 p.m. The Roomsounds will take the stage and the Dallas four-some is sure to shake it up. They credit their honest sounds from studying the classics – the Beattles, Stones, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Check out some of their latest hits online: theroomsounds.com

Cottonwood will be tapping specialty beers just for the night and will offer a free champagne toast for the countdown. There is no cover charge and doors will stay open until 2 a.m. Cottonwood is located at 3422 N. Shepherd Dr. 77018.

Silver Street VenueIf you’re looking to step out and dance

the night away, Silver Street has a slew of entertainment lined up for you. From 80s glam cover band LC ROCKS, to Houston’s 104.1 KRBRE DJ Tony Styles and cover band RAT RANCH, you’ll be sure to dance the night away. The venue will entertain their own version of Battle of the Bands with each band playing one set after the other to give the crowd a variety of music all night long. Ticket prices are a bit pricey, but $100 gets you an all-inclusive pack-age that includes premium drinks from the main bar, complimentary champagne toast at midnight and breakfast buffet. Tickets are on sale now: www.eventbrite.com/e/houston-new-years-eve-party-the-h-town-countdown-2015-tickets-13719321861 Silver Street Venue is located at 2000 Ed-wards Street 77007.

FitzgeraldsIf you’re wanting to party like it’s 1999,

you have to be at the Fitz to ring in the new year. Celebrate in sound beat style with bands from BLSHS, Teeel, New York City Queens, children of pop, and Yung Slutty. BLSHS will be your headliner of the night so check out their crowd favorite: http://

youtu.be/cefRiEZjQMg The theme for the night is masquerade ball, so masks are en-couraged, but not required. Dancing, how-ever, is required. No standing in the back or messing around on your phone. Did I mention that this show is free for 21+ and $10 for anyone under? That’s right. Put your dancing shoes on! Fitzgerald is lo-cated at 2706 White Oak Dr. 77007.

Hughes HangarIf red carpet, glamour and glitz are the

key words to your night, Hughes Hangar is offering your perfect classic Hollywood night. Hughes is rolling out the red carpet lined with paparazzi taking your photo. But once you’ve maneuvered your way away from the press, stop at the Step and Repeat for a commemorative photo. The dance floor will feature a light show inside instead of under the stars outside. Live entertainment will be featured and Oscar Awards will be given out for Best Male Lead and Female Lead. Tickets start at $35 and check out their premiere packages for your group: nightout.com/events/classic-hollywood-new-years-eve-hughes-hangar-houston-nye2015/tickets#.VJBnFdLF91b Hughes Hangar is located at 2811 Wash-ington Ave. 77007.

Party RentalsIt feels like the end of the year got here a lot faster than usual. Maybe I was too busy too notice? I’ve certain-ly had fun writing the last five columns, and bringing you the stories of local artists. Expect to see a lot more of that in 2015. I’m not one for once a year resolutions, I seem to make a week-ly habit of those - but I’ll certainly continue with the interviews.

This week I’m bringing you a final round of shows to help assist you with your last minute artsy shopping sprees. Start Thursday evening at Glitter Karaoke - I know it does not sound like the usual spot for art. As reported here

before, Glitter Karaoke features local artists like Valerie G of Cultured Critter Collective. Cute to ferocious anime style figures that are perfect for the collector or stocking stuffers. Mike Potowski and Maria Gonzalez of benjy’s on Washington will be in the kitchen working hard for your appetite. The fun starts around 8 p.m. at 2621 Milam St., 77006.

Friday night is a Mexican Posada at the East End Studio Gallery. The gallery is coming up on its fifth anniversary and continues to bring out more of the best artists, vendors and food than you can shake a piñata at, and yes they’ll have those too. This gallery space is surround-ed by other businesses that will be open and two restaurants. East End Studio Gallery, 708C Telephone Road Houston, TX 77023 www.eestudiogallery.com

This is worth the short drive and here is more about what a Posada celebration is from their website:

Posadas are a nine-day celebration tradi-tionally celebrated in Latin America. A posada is the reenactment of the Census pilgrimage to Bethlehem by Mary and Joseph (los peregri-nos) in search of a room. From December 16th through December 24th, Mexican families cus-tomarily hold a posada party one evening in each of their homes.

During the reenactment, the posada hosts act as the inn keepers while their guests act as

the pilgrims (los peregrinos). Holding lighted candles, each group takes turns singing verses to each other. Then the inn keeper hoists open the door and welcomes the pilgrims inside.

Posada parties are not only marked by tra-ditional rituals but are also filled with cheerful socializing, authentic food, and fun for the en-tire family, including a special Christmas drink and a piñata filled with candy.

Being the third weekend of the month, we have our regular events like Discovery Green Flea at Discovery Green Downtown and the Hardy & Nance Street Artist Open Studios, both Saturday. Hardy & Nance is at 1707 Nance St., 77020. Open studios are 5-9 p.m. and includes the nonprofit Artists Alive & Well Showcase 2014 in the JoMar Visions Gallery space.

Discovery Green Flea is Saturday from 11 -5 p.m. at Discovery Green 1500 McKinney, 77010.

Jefferson Woodruff of Austin is a metal worker and jewelry artist. Woodruff is a regu-lar at Discovery Green Flea as well as my show, First Saturday Arts Market. I think it says a lot about the Houston art scene that an artist of Woodruff ’s caliber travels to Houston several times a month, year round to show his work. You’ll know him by his cheerful attitude, jewel-ers “eye” that he wears while working, white hair and the many mobiles hanging around the perimeter of his tent.

Discovery Green Flea is no flea market. Ex-pect to find recycled, upcycled, collectables, furniture and oddities that just may not fit in elsewhere. Plus, an amazing setting, great local musicians and popular food trucks. Get more

online too: discoverygreen.com/fleaFinally I want you to check out Houston

Makerspace Holiday Maker Bash from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. Last week I introduced you to Chasity Porter and her Dormalou Project (aka her mobile art gallery). Porter will be here and will have her monthly arts and crafts table out. Hosted by Paper and Space Collective, you will find local vendors, non-profits, music, beer, and more plus inside the building, Hous-ton Makerspace will host demos, classes, and open studios. 100 Hutcheson St., 77003

My family loves to decorate for Christmas. Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. I love getting gifts, but you need to remember that Christmas is not just about gifts. Christmas is about Jesus’ birth. Jesus was born in Beth-lehem, in a stable.

From Kiley

Dear Santa,Santa I have a few questions. San-

ta how can you go threw walls if I don’t have a chimney. And if you re-ply don’t say “Santa magic.” I don’t believe in magic or you, but I believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Do you believe in all three? If you don’t you don’t get to live with God at the day you die.

From Brian

Dear Santa,What I want for Christmas is

legos, video games, Pokemon booster boxes and Nerf guns.

From Hunter

Dear Santa,All I want for christmas is a eng-

lish bulldog. Or if you happen to fly over a apple store, stop by and get me a iphone 6 please. I am not sure how you’re going get into a hotel room. And don’t bother to eat the cookies, those are mine! But just get something so I can be satisfied.

From Parker

Dear Santa, I’m stuck in the middle of believ-

ing and not. I mean my parents say he still exists, but they also say he died. So I’m stuck. He was Christian so he might be in heaven so he still exists. So that means the presents he gives us the parents that say Santa Claus. But that also means that those presents are from the parents, but also by you.

By Daniel

Dear Santa, I can’t wait until you come to

Houston and all I want for Christ-mas is a basketball hoop, basket-ball, a 6 pound sand ball, weights, and a 12 pound sand ball.

From Dillan

Dear Santa,First lets pray Dear God, thank

you for a good day. Help the old, the homeless and animals. Let us be with you today with our daily bread. Let Santa have a nice trip -- no storms and let me know how my nana is and popoe. Amen. shoes and love. For my dad is base-balls and baseball gloves. This is what I want for Christmas and my family.

Hit The Trail New research has found obesity and in ammation have a direct and complex relationship that effects overall health. The more weight pets and people gain, the more our joints hurt, we become less active and gain more weight. New research also con rms the best treatment to reverse this vi-cious cycle remains eating correctly and gradually becoming more active. Dogs love to walk and play, people need encouragement. Too often resolutions and unreachable exercise goals lead to disappointment. A pleasant walk with an enthusiastic partner can warm your heart and reverse the aging process. Compliance is easy. A daily walk will give you purpose to get up, go outdoors and make someone else happy. That wagging tail is a natural anti-depressant. Even though walking will increase longevity and stave off disease, there are risks. Be aware of these when and where you walk. Also an annual health exam is essential for everyone. Dogs can acquire diseases and parasites along the trail. They must be properly vaccinated and given prescription parasite preventive monthly. Also, be responsible and scoop the poop with plastic bags. Houston’s climate and crowded population provide a haven for parasites and contagious disease. So hit the trail today. Plan ahead and make it a fun routine you can’t miss. It will add years to your life while adding life to your years.

For the members of Don-caster Secondary College’s boys basketball team, the nearly 14,000 mile trip from Australia to Texas was a long journey but one that was more than worth it, due in part to the warm welcome by the Waltrip Rams on Dec. 13.

Russell Lee, head coach of the DSC boys basketball pro-gram, had nothing but positive things to say about the Rams and their visit to America. The school is located near Mel-bourne, Australia, and has an enrollment of over 1,300 stu-dents. However, in a country where a sport like basketball is considered niche, the visit to America means much more than a simple exhibition game to the group of youngsters and their coach.

“We’re thrilled to be hosted here in America,” Lee said. “We found the game extremely challenging and our guys were so immersed in it and being in the birthplace of basketball. Everyone in Texas has been so welcoming and we’re thrilled and privileged.”

While Waltrip defeated the school in the exhibition by a score of 79-49, both Lee and WHS basketball Head Coach Dan Kelly said the game itself isn’t the focal point of the ex-perience.

“Culturally, basketball is very different in Australia,” Lee said. “It’s a little bit more relaxed and the intensity is a little bit lower. Some of our players have had huge success in Australia winning a Junior National Title, so it is sup-posed to be exposure to that next level.”

Lee said a number of his players also have aspirations to attend universities in the

US on a basketball scholarship and the exhibition is an oppor-tunity to get a first hand look at the competition they’ll be facing.

The Doncaster students will be in the US for the next three weeks, traveling to Dallas and then to Los Angeles for a trip to Disneyland, Lee said. The group has had a large amount of support from their home-town, parents and schools and the trip has certainly been a challenge from the beginning. The group also traveled along-side the school’s girls basket-ball team.

“The trip has probably cost an upwards of about 7,000 Australian Dollars per stu-dent,” Lee said.

Kelly said his players and Doncaster’s exchanged gifts before the game and also had pizza and drinks following the game. Kelly said his players are told to sit with members of the other team to promote socialization, but much of that comes naturally to players of both nationalities.

“The last few years it’s been a lot of fun,” Kelly said. “They listen to music and tell a lot of jokes. It’s always great to watch them interact.”

The Rams have faced other schools from Australia for the past three years, with a par-ticularly challenging game against a school from Sydney that went to overtime, Kelly said.

“We really got lucky,” Kelly said with a laugh.

The game also represents a chance for the youngsters to expel some extra energy before finals. The team played a district game against Sharp-stown during dead week, los-ing by 4 points, and this exhi-bition is one of the last games before Waltrip heads into finals week.

“The game itself is really secondary,” Kelly said. “We want the kids to mingle with one another. They’re all just like normal guys talking with one another.”

Lee said the experience is one to remember for both him and his players.

“I’ve loved this a lot as a coach as well and I’m just su-per excited to meet people just as excited about basketball as myself,” Lee said. “It’s nice to play in front of a good crowd and meet with other coaches to share their experiences.”
