The Economic Forecast Luncheon was a huge success this year, thanks to a great deal of hard work by the committee that came together under the leadership of Megan F. Salch of Tell Your Tale Marketing & De-sign. Jonathan Lanz of Computer-Wiz, Ar-lene SoRelle of Tejas Office Products and David Walker of AXA Advisors along with Jacob Millwee and Terry Burge from the Chamber staff all worked very hard. Their efforts resulted in a wonderful event that provid-ed value to all who attended. I also would like to thank all of our sponsors again for their generosity. Without you, the event would not be possible and we sincerely appreciate

your support, especially Jona-than Lanz of Computer-Wiz and Jerry Gann of Center-Point Energy — our two plati-num sponsors.

March is here and you know what that means! CRAWFISH FESTIVAL! I know that I’m ready to enjoy the day with all of you at our an-nual festival, which is back in the heart of the Heights. De-tails on locations,

times and where to purchase all things Crawfish can be found on the website at www.

HeightsChamber.com. The Crawfish Festival committee, headed by Natalie Coyle has been hard at work for months. Now they need our support more than ever. Please pur-chase Crawfish plate tickets and raffle tickets. Also, if you think your business could sell raffle or plate tickets, please contact the Chamber to make arrangements. We would be happy to supply you with tick-ets to sell on our behalf.

Spring is upon us, so come out and join us at the Crawfish Festival and all the other great events we have coming up.

Denson Health & Fitness, headquartered in the Heights, owns Koko FitClubs in the Greater Houston area, includ-ing the Heights location at 189 Heights Blvd in the Washing-ton Heights Center.

Building on the momentum of Houston’s hot franchise market, John and Marisol Den-son formed Denson Health & Fitness in late 2012, and were later joined by John’s brother, Travis Denson.

They invested in Koko Fit-Clubs because of the stream-lined and simplified retail model the franchise offered and its mission to simplify the way the world gets, and stays, healthy. Over the last 18 months, Denson Health & Fitness has opened six Koko FitClubs in Katy (two clubs), The Woodlands, Champions, Cypress and the Heights.

“Through Koko FitClub, we are changing lives in a positive way. Within weeks, our mem-bers are stronger, fitter and slimmer, and they look and feel better,” said John Denson. “It even works for my father, long-time Heights resident Russell Denson! You can find him most late afternoons at the 189 Heights Blvd location.”

Koko FitClub is a leader of the digital fitness revolution. Koko’s patented Smartrain-ing™ system uses advanced digital technologies to offer a completely new fitness expe-rience that provides the ben-efits of a traditional 90-minute workout in 45 minutes or less. Most high tech fitness gadgets passively monitor physical

aspects such as body move-ments, heartbeat, oxygen satu-ration, pace or stride. Koko created the first truly digital fit-ness club and training system to provide personalized cardio and strength workouts that are based on exercise science and guided by sophisticated digital tools. Every workout is tracked and analyzed in the cloud, with members’ workout data accessible 24/7 on all of their

mobile devices. Koko FitClubs offers free fitness assessments along with guest passes for complimentary work outs. Personalized nutrition plans, known as Koko Fuel, are avail-able for members.

The Green Painter gets a new nameJeff Kaplan, owner of the

19th St. non-toxic paint store, The Green Painter, just an-nounced that the store has rebranded to become a new storefront, New Living Bed-room.

As a certified B-Corpora-tion, they have a pledge to social conscience and have committed to measure their success based on impact rath-er than profit. Since the needs for non-toxic paint in Houston have been met, The Green Painter will now shift its focus to meet a different demand to solve social, environmental and economic problems in the community to encourage healthier living and healthier homes. There are currently

only two B-Corps in Houston, but 950 worldwide in 60 dif-ferent industries.

Businesses certified as this new type of corporation are leading a better-business movement to inspire people to use their businesses for good and to not only be the best in the world, but for the world.

In short, B-Corps are to sustainability as Fair Trade is to coffee.

New Living has decided to make the transition to meet the needs of the community for sustainable and healthy home furniture.

They are currently the only local business creating health-ier living environments for

Houstonians, with a hyperlo-cal focus on clean, localized production from their artisan workshop.

The new storefront will be friendlier for 19th St. foot traf-fic because it will carry small-er home furnishing items such as healthy bedding essentials, sustainable nursery needs and clean air and water filtration systems (in addition to organic mattresses and paint products from The Green Painter).

They plan to continue push-ing forward as a healthy home brand to see that everyone in the community has access to affordable and healthier living environments.

With spring break upon us and summer vacation looming on the horizon, your children might be looking for things to do to stay busy. If you’ve got animal lovers in your home, you might encour-age your kids to do something fun AND charitable to help animals in need. From large-scale to small-scale, there’s something that children of all ages can do to make a diff erence in the lives of animals in need.

Volunteer together: Each animal shelter has diff erent age requirements for their volunteers, but most shelters would welcome calm, well-behaved children (ac-companied by a parent or guard-ian) to come by and help socialize the animals there. Knowing if an animal is comfortable around children is an invaluable piece of information for a shelter. Spend-ing time with children in the shelter can also greatly increase a pet’s chances of being adopted — the extra socialization that your child can give a shelter pet is much-appreciated.

Party with a heart: For your child’s next birthday party, choose an animal-theme. Check into bringing the guests along to a shelter for a tour and then ask guests to bring donations or supplies to donate to a shelter, in lieu of gifts.

Find a penny, pick it up: if your kids are like the kids who live in my house, fi nding a penny on the ground is comparable to winning the lottery. Also, asking for donations of pennies seems less daunting than being asked to whip out your checkbook. Encour-age your child to host a “penny drive” by collecting pennies, rolling them and cashing them in to donate to a shelter or animal rescue group. A little bit goes a long way to help animals in need.

Sell some goodies or get crafty: Take advantage of the warmer weather and encourage

your child to host a bake sale or lemonade stand, with proceeds benefi ting a shelter or rescue group. Also fun is to make no-sew fl eece blankets and cat toys for shelter pets. The act of earning money then donating to a good cause is character-building at its best!

Park clean up: A simple way to help pets is to show up at your local park or dog park--plastic bags and gloves in hand--and clean up. Making the park look nice increases the quality of life for pets and their owners. Seeing the park so tidy might also en-courage other people to maintain the beauty.

Get the school involved: En-courage your child to discuss his love for animals with his teachers and librarians. See if they would be willing to help the whole class to learn more about helping animals in need, by reading books about animals to the class or promoting a class project to help a shelter or rescue group. Educa-tion is key to helping animals in the long-term.

Save the date:Make plans to participate in the

Houston Humane Society’s 33rd annual K-9 Fun Run and Walk on Sunday, March 23 at 1100 Bagby St. Go to www.houstonhumane.org for more information.

Just a few of the neighbors present at the well attended gathering were David Lorms, Court-ney Patel, Sue Schmidt, Susan Kostelecky, Jeanette Black, Brett Harris, Ginny Ledwell, Patrick Murphy, Willie Diefenbach, Glenda Clerc, Clint Croley, Greg Green, Mary Margaret Carroll, Mark Malisheski, Justin Gordon, Nora Loera,

Everywhere one turned there was excellent conversa-tion and someone with whom you wanted to speak. It was a brilliant fi rst gathering. Let the networking begin!

Waltrip’s Director of Bands Jesse Espinosa would like to share results from the re-cent UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest held Saturday, Feb. 22, at Bellaire High School. “There were a number of breakthrough performances from all of our students, which included a few 1st year instru-

mentalists. Based on the UIL rating system, a 1st Division is a Superior Performance, 2nd Division is an Excellent Perfor-mance, 3rd Division is a Good Performance, 4th Division is a Fair Performance and a 5th Di-vision is a Poor Performance. Saturday’s results produced nothing less than a 3rd Divi-sion rating for our Ram Band students. Overall Results: 29 – 1st Division, Superior Rat-ings; 19 – 2nd Division, Excel-lent Ratings; and 7 – 3rd Divi-sion, Good Ratings. Of the 29 1st Division, Superior Ratings, 12 Soloists and 5 Ensembles have earned the certifi cation to advance to the State Solo and Ensemble Contest, which will be held at the University of Texas-Austin during Me-morial Day weekend. Students going on to state competi-tion: Reyvan Gray (11) – Bb Clarinet Soloist; Jazmine Jimenez (10) – Bb Clarinet

Soloist; Jesus Del Campo(9) – Tenor Saxophone Solo-ist; Marco Ulloa (12) – Tenor Saxophone Soloist; Erick Torres (12) – Trumpet Solo-ist; Esmeralda Sandoval(10) – Trumpet Soloist; Ale-jandro Garza (10) – Trumpet Soloist; Joseph Meza (12) – French Horn Soloist; Emily Roberts (10) – French Horn Soloist; Oscar Gonzalez (12) – Trombone Soloist; Justin Ruiz (12) – Bass Trombone Soloist; Alexis Leija (12) – Marimba Soloist; Saxophone Quartet - Jesus Del Campo

(9), Tristan Pilato (11), Abi-gale Pina (11); Kevin Wo-odard (11); Clarinet Choir - Maria Aguirre (11), Martha Fuentes (12), Reyvan Gray(11), Jazmine Jimenez (10), Teresa Landeros (9), Rosy Ruedas (12), Jasmine Sala-zar (11), and Nancy Lopez (12); Brass Quintet - Nicholas Davis (12), James Elam (10), Eduardo Sierra (10), Erick Torres (12), Gregory Vega, Jr. (12); Percussion Ensemble performing “Sinister Minis-ter” - Carmelita Anderson(12), Dionesia Davis (12),

Rebekah Farris (12), Jor-dan Gomez (11), Mason Griffi th (10), Nataly Ochoa(12), James Ortiz (12), Juan Perez (12), Kevin Quintero (10); Percussion Trio perform-ing “Fiesta” - Alexis Leija(12), Kevin Quintero (10) and Michelle Zaragoza (12). Both of our Jazz Ensembles, Jazz I and Jazz II, received a 1st Division, Superior Rating. All of this equaled a total of 93 medals for our students. Our next upcoming events include jazz festivals and concert band competitions. Go Ram Band!”

Hola, muchachos. Meet Papito, an 8-month-old terrier/Chihua-hua mix. Papito means “little daddy” in Spanish. He was abandoned by his previous owners when they moved into an apartment, but that didn’t sway Papito’s sweet nature or sense of loyalty. Go to www.cap4pets.org to learn more.

There’s a new game at Frank Black Middle School, and it’s drawing plenty of ex-citement.

The school added boys and girls lacrosse teams, which gives FBMS the most compre-hensive middle school athlet-ics program in Houston ISD with 12 teams.

The boys have played five games, and the girls will begin playing in late March/early April.

“They’ve shown a lot of heart, a lot of hustle,” Pan-thers coach Tim Weltin said. “They’ve shown remarkable improvement.”

Weltin, a Garden Oaks resident who serves as the school’s Parent Involvement Coordinator, contacted United States Lacrosse about ob-taining a grant for the team’s equipment.

The cost of lacrosse equip-ment, per player, is $300 for

the boys team and $100 for the girls. Boys lacrosse involves more contact, thus requires more protective equipment.

The team’s assistant coach is John Gaipa, a Math teacher at the school.

Lacrosse, traditionally popular along the Eastern sea-board, is North America’s fast-est growing sport.

It parallels the growth of FBMS, which has grown from 480 students in 2011 to 840 currently. The school expects to have 950 students in 2014-15.

FBMS is one of three HISD middle schools to field a lacrosse team, along with Pershing and Pin Oak. They function as a club team and play squads from around the Greater Houston area.

Last season, FBMS had a practice squad with 12 play-ers, but they didn’t have any games.

Eight of the current 22 players honed their skills on the practice squad last sea-

son, including Nicholas Perez, a seventh grader who plays goalkeeper.

Perez said he loves the adrenaline of playing goal-keeper, and he saved 50 per-cent of the shots on goal in a loss against the Pearland Rail-cats last Sunday.

Sixth grader George Fields said he wanted to play lacrosse because it was something dif-ferent.

“I usually play baseball or basketball, but the way it’s set up, I like it a lot,” Fields said. “On defense, our team is im-

proving more than anything.”Eighth grader Justin Me-

dina joined the team to stay in shape for football. He’s en-joyed it beyond the condition-ing aspect.

A new game in town

The St. Pius X boys basketball team will look to win its first state title since 2007 this weekend. (Photo by Michael Sudhalter)

Pius boys competing for state title

The St. Pius X boys basket-ball team is the last Leader area basketball team still standing.

“It’s going to be tough to win state, but when the season started, we weren’t even in the Top 25,” SPX first-year head coach Russell Carr said. “We just kind of beat the odds.”

The two-time defending district champion Panthers (23-10) will play Plano John Paul II at 9 p.m. Friday in the TAPPS 5A state semifinals in Mansfield.

The winner advances to the 5A state championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday in Mans-field to play El Paso Cathedral or Plano Prestonwood Chris-tian.

SPX’s last trip to the state semifinals came in 2007, which was the last time it won a state crown.

Carr, however, is familiar with the state semifinals. This is his 14th consecutive trip after leading the Westbury Christian boys and girls bas-ketball teams to the 4A and 3A state semifinals over the past 13 seasons. He won a total of four state titles at WCS – three with the boys team and one with the girls squad.

Last weekend, the Panthers opened the postseason with a 55-33 win over Laredo St. Augustine and then edged Ad-dison Trinity Christian, 45-41, in the state quarterfinals.

Trinity Christian is the school that defeated SPX, 28-27, in the opening round of the football playoffs last fall.

Tusa to be inducted into Texas High School Football Hall of Fame

One of Houston Indepen-dent School District’s big-

gest sports legends will be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame this spring.

The induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 3 at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, on the campus of Bay-lor University, in Waco.

Timbergrove resident Joe Tusa, 86, graduated from Reagan High and went on to coach many sports at his alma mater, most notably football.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” Tusa said. “One of my ex-foot-ball players has gone to bat for me again. To be included with the people who are in the Hall of Fame. I never dreamed of it, and I’m very humbled by the whole thing.”

He became an assistant principal at Waltrip High when that school opened in the fall of 1960.

Tusa was the HISD athletic director from 1965 to 1989 and oversaw the athletic de-partment through integration and Title IX.

In the fall of 2012, HISD re-named Delmar Stadium and Fieldhouse as Delmar-Tusa.

During halftime of a Rea-gan-Waltrip football game, the district honored Tusa and pre-sented him a plaque.

LHN girls soccer earns a victory

The Lutheran High North girls soccer program, which didn’t field a team last season, won its first game in two years last week.

The Lady Lions defeated district rival, Emery-Weiner, 1-0. Kennedy Conlee scored the winning goal, and Brianna Bakenhus recorded the shut-out.

Timbergrove resident Joe Tusa, a Reagan High graduate who coached at his alma mater and later become Houston ISD’s athletic director for 25 years, will be in-ducted into the Texas High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame on May 3. (File photo)
