The number in memberships has been soaring and Mr. Yeonas credits this success to Arch- bishop Demetrios and what he has brought in to the Church. He also praised the efforts of the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees, the various diocese chairmen, and the efforts of Fr. Alex Karloutsos, executive director of Leadership 100. We would not have this success without Fr. Alex. His relationships with people around the U.S. has been critical, said Yeonas, citing that a big factor has been the $10 million pledge to Hellenic College/Holy Cross School of Theol- ogy. The pledge has created a surge of inter- est for the endowment fund. Weve made great strides, Mr. Yeonas added. With 42 new members, the New Jersey Dio- cese has already surpassed its goal of 38 new members. Mr. Yeonas praised the efforts of Pe- ter G. Pappas and Harry Magafan, the diocese and Washington area chairmen, for their tire- less work. In the New York Archdiocesan District, 39 new members have joined, representing 63 percent of its goal. Mr. Yeonas also praised the efforts of Michael Jaharis and Peter M. Dion of the New York area and all the area chairmen for this unprecedented success. As of September 30, 2000, 140 new persons have either joined or have pledged to join since the start of the membership drive in December 1999, reaching a total goal of 461 new mem- bers. Another key factor, says Mr. Yeonas, that has led to the success of the membership drive has been the various social gatherings organized by the area chairmen. Indeed a key role has been the dinners and the one-on-one meetings with potential candidates. Recently, a portion of the generous Leadership 100 grant of $175,000 to the archdiocese was earmarked to develop a Department of Inter- church/Interfaith Marriages based on the re- search work of Rev. Fr. Charles Joanides, Ph.D., of St. Nicholas Church, Newburgh, NY. A social science researcher and marital thera- pist, Fr. Charles was commissioned back in 1997 to examine inter-Christian marriages in our archdiocese throughout the U.S. According to him, 66 percent of the marriages conducted annually are inter-Christian or inter-cultural. The conversation [on interfaith marriages] on a national level started years ago in the mid- 70s and as a result of the increasing number of interfaith marriages today, I was brought in to execute a study based on research and orthodoxology, said Fr. Charles. In his studies, Fr. Charles came across dated and relatively scant material on the subject. Dear Friends,

I hope that you all enjoyed a glorious summer.

I have heard glowing reports that our 35th BiennialClergy-Laity Congress was a huge success. I am sorrythat my unexpected heart surgery prevented me fromattending the first Clergy-Laity Congress of our belovedArchbishop Demetrios and the first I have ever missedin 30 years.

Father Alex, our Leadership 100 executive director,informs me that Leadership 100 recruitment efforts havebeen amazing since our conference in Washington, DC,last May under the capable Millennium MembershipChairman Stephen Yeonas. And with 140 new members,we are getting close to reaching our goals. Everyone canhelp by recruiting one more member and we will reachour goal of 500 Leadership 100 members. Please helpus make this dream come true.

We should have the largest class of new membersat our 2001 conference, January 10-14, 2001 in Naples,Florida, under the capable chairmanship of our vice-chairman, Gus Stavropoulos and his gracious wife Maria.It is not early to mark your calendars now and reservethis period of time for what promises to be another out-standing conference.

I am pleased to announce that George P. Kokalishas agreed to serve as chairman of our drive for 200fulfilled members by the end of 2000 and I am confidentthat with George�s dynamic drive we will see our goalreached by the end of December.

On a personal and sad note, I would like all of usto remember and cherish the life of Nicholas Kallins, thebeloved son of our friends James and Virginia and hisbrother George. We pray God will bless Nick and num-ber him among the holy and saints of the ages. Eternalbe his memory!

Millennium Membership Soarsthrough Leadership

A most successful dinner was the one sponsored by Dr. Nicholas andNancy Vidalakis and George Marcus of the San Francisco Diocese, onJune 7, where 29 potential candidates attended the event in Seattle,Washington. Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, a former Leadership 100 executivedirector, in the early 1990�s, and newly elected president of HellenicCollege/Holy Cross School of Theology, said that he was privileged torepresent Leadership 100, Chairman Arthur Anton and Fr. AlexKarloutsos at the event. The event brought in three new members: ClaraNicon, the Panos family and the Kostakis family. On September 28, Mr.Nicholas J. Bouras and Mrs. Cassandra Romas sponsored a dinner inNew Jersey, which resulted in two new members. Over the next month,six additional events will be hosted by the chairmen in other dioceses.�Fr. Alex, the chairmen, co-chairmen and area chairmen have a strongcommitment to meeting with candidates individually,� stressed Mr.Yeonas. �There is complete unity and enthusiasm for achieving the goalat the end of this year.�

Retired priest, Rev. Protopresbyter Fr. Dean Talagan of Cheyenne, Wyo-ming, has joined the Leadership 100 team as of June 15 on a part-timebasis. Fr. Dean will work closely with the Denver diocese to help attractmore new members to the growing family of Leadership 100. �I am veryexcited that I will be working with Fr. Alex and the Leadership commit-tee members to contribute towards a fruitful future for the ministries ofour Church,� said Fr. Dean.

The Eye of a NeedleSpirituality and Success (Part II)

John ChryssavgisAt the beginning of this new millenniumwe are at the point of facing new tasks,new challenges, and new possibilities forpromoting and enhancing our work as aspecific group of people. First, we arecalled to respond to the gigantic social,political, economic, ethical, and demo-graphic transformations occurring all overthe globe. Second, we are called to re-spond to the increasing recognition of thesignificance of our Orthodox identity, tra-dition, and witness. Third, we are calledto respond to our faith in God who hasblessed us with the ability to offer verysubstantive assistance to the Church andto people in need.The above three challenges constitute avery strong call for all of us, an invitationto continue our mission in increasingpower and effectiveness. The mission isbasically a mission to give, and to sharein love what was granted to us as faithand as opportunities for good works.However, it is not sufficient to say that ourmission is to give and to share. We haveto add several qualifiers that further elu-cidate the specific mission of this particu-lar family of people, Leadership 100.First, our mission is to develop the art ofgiving and sharing. This means to giveand to share in ways that are full of grace,of beauty, of charm, of tenderness, andthat express the most refined of humanfeelings. Second, our mission is to de-velop �giving and sharing� in a free, per-sonal, and deliberate way. �Each one,�says the Apostle Paul, �must do as hehas made up his mind, not reluctantly orunder compulsion, for God loves a cheer-ful giver.� (2 Cor. 9:7) Third, our missionis to give and share in a generous andcontinuous manner. If we do this, notonly is God able to provide �in abundancefor every good work,� but we will be �en-riched in every way for this great gener-osity.� (2 Cor. 9:6-11) Fourth, our missionis in developing giving and sharing as apowerful witness to faith. Giving andsharing is a witness because it constitutesa truly universal language, thus being apowerful manifestation of the love andpower of God expressed to our lives andthrough our lives to others. Our missionis not only a matter of doing, it is a mat-ter of being. The truly great challenge isto be permanently in a condition of giv-ing and sharing, to have giving and shar-ing as our genuine human identity, andultimately, to be imitators of Christ, theOne who is the unsurpassed model ofgiving and sharing.

Archpastorial ReflectionsArchpastoral Reflections

In our last column, we explored the �gos-pel� according to Steven Covey�s SevenHabits of Highly Effective People. Yet spiri-tuality is not always �good news.� Theglory of Mt. Tabor cannot be isolated fromthe suffering on Mt. Calvary. The two hillsare complementary. Transfiguration andresurrection are never at the expense ofcrucifixion. Here are the same life-chang-ing habits from the perspective of spiritualimperfection, and not success:

(i) Be Proactive: The way of freedom pre-sumes an understanding of limits. Whatwe human beings can do is also relatedto what we cannot do and to discerning thedifference between willingness and willful-ness. Willingness involves the acceptancethat we are not in absolute control. Willfulnessinvolves the demand for change - sometimesin ourselves, but usually in others.

(ii) Begin with the End in Mind: Secular in-dependence dictates that �the end� alwaysserves my interests. Yet for the Christian,the end (telos) is connected to the perfect(teleios) God who loves the whole world,the just and the unjust alike (see Matthew5:43-48). Completion (another word for�the end� and for �perfection�) is closely re-lated to compassion. No one earns spiri-tuality alone; it is a gift that comes fromothers and through others.

(iii) Put First Things First: Setting direc-tions and choosing priorities means ac-cepting both that we are �in the image ofGod� and that we always fall short of ourvocation. Life is never just �either/or.� Weare saints and sinners, angels and beasts.This is precisely why we can never bejudgmental. We cannot �order� amongpeople. We must always, indeed only, lookfirst at our own shortcomings.

(iv) Think Win/Win: The winning lies in therunning of the race - not in the watchingfrom the sidelines, and certainly not inanalyzing from the comfort of complacency.Yet spirituality is even beyond this. It entailsadmitting one�s powerlessness before God,surrendering to divine grace, releasing ev-ery effort to control. That is spiritual victory- when our failure becomes the prelude toreceiving a gift from above. Then, we ap-preciate how both joy and sorrow, good andevil, have a part in the spiritual way andwhy tears play such an important role.

(v) Seek First to Understand, Then to beUnderstood: Accepting our imperfectionsis revealed in acceptance of others. Un-derstanding involves letting go of the needto be understood. How can we expect any-one else to be perfect if we ourselves areimperfect? In fact, we do not forgive; wediscover (receive) forgiveness. We are for-given when we are open to forgiving; andwe forgive as we are being forgiven. Weget only by giving; and we give only bygetting. Spirituality means mutuality.

(vi) Synergize: Our need for mutualityarises from our imperfection, from the factthat by ourselves we are never enough. Werequire others to help us; and we needothers to help them. Such a home we call�church.� It is not the collection of sepa-rate (even similar) stories, but the discov-ery of a story that is shared. It is the real-ity of community, the experience of gen-erosity and gratitude.

(vii) Sharpen the Saw: The spiritual life isone of those realities that you have onlyso long as you seek it. When you think youpossess it, or have succeeded in achiev-ing it, you�ve already lost it. The goal ofthe spiritual way is simply to keep moving- one step at a time. It is the agonizing pro-cess of falling down and getting up again,of building something up and then beingknocked down again.

HELLENIKAOrigins of the Greek People

2200-1200 BC

Since the history of the Greeks is the longest re-corded history in Europe (it goes back to the doubleintroduction of written accounts first in the linear Bsyllabary script between 1400-1200 BC and finally tothe Phoenician-derived Greek alphabet after 800 BC)we must look briefly at the thorny question of the ori-gins of the Greek-speaking people as inhabitants ofthe present-day Greek peninsula. Before the introduc-tion of these two systems of writing most of whatscholars believe about the origins of the Greek peopledepends on three sources: Archeology, Homer and theIliad and the Odyssey, and on later Greek traditions.In addition, there are the ancient place-names andthe Greek language, both of which encase a greatdeal of information on the prehistoric Greeks. Thenthere are the geographical and climatic facts of theseregions in which they settled during the tribal migra-tions, which began possibly in 2200 BC and contin-ued for a millennium until the last of the Greeks, theDorians, entered through Epirus and finally reachedthe Peloponnese and elsewhere sometime around1200 BC. Climate and geography were to be amongthe facts, which determined much in the evolution ofGreek political, social, economical and cultural struc-tures for some four millennia.Greece proper, the islands, the Aegean, the Ionian,Mediterranean, and Black Seas maybe characterizedas constituting a land and maritime mass that isheavily mountainous with an extensive, vast exposureto the seas. Prior to the advent of modern mechanicaltechnology, this region was on the whole agriculturallypoor, with the exception of the larger Thessalian andMacedonian plains. The arable regions were largelyrestricted to the small plains around such urbancenters as Athens, Sparta, Corinth, Thebes, Elis,Ephesus and the like. The political consequenceswere the eventual creation of communities that were,each of them, to become independent sovereign city-states with their own laws, coinage, armies, andforeign policy. Geographically splintered and separatedby mountainous barriers, the larger society was

�cantonized� into small city-states that had no sufficiencyof land to accommodate demographic growth.With demographic growth and the insufficiency ofeconomic revenues, the Greek city-states were veryearly consumed by civil, political, and economic strifeand thus had to innovate and change their societieseither through maritime migration, specialization oflabor and export or by militarization of the state andconquests of their neighbors. Thus it was from veryearly times that the Greeks were turned into a nationof emigrants, seafarers and merchants. Those of theGreeks who now live in America, Australia andCanada are the products of such historical conditionsand are keenly aware of this historical development.The effect and role of geography on the Greek na-tion is accordingly profound.This same geographical cantonization of the Greeks,and their separation from one another by the moun-tains and seas has produced an astonishing variationin the evolution of the political institutions, dialects,music, and popular culture of the Greeks. It is no ac-cident today that in the greater New York area thereis no one central Greek organization but rather count-less communities, and over 100 regional cultural so-cieties. The Church forms an exception, of course.And historically the variations in ancient Greek cultureare dominant.Geography, climate, economic poverty have thus, asHerodotos recognized, been a powerful motive forceand stimulant to the rich development of a Greek na-tional character.In the next installment we shall examine, again verybriefly, the origins of the Greeks as reflected byarchaeology, the Greek language and the Homericpoems of the Iliad and Odyssey, which at the sametime, constitute the beginning of that great monumentthat is European literature. ing because we forgot the meaningof the Balanced Man.

The ancient Greeks had an axiom�sound mind, sound body.� It wasbelieved the body�s good health wasvital because it was the vessel of themind. They believed physical train-ing was necessary to keep the bodyat its peek so that the mind couldalso operate at its best. And 2,500years later modern medicine hascome to the same conclusion.

These same old Greeks believed justas the body was the vessel of themind � the mind housed your human-ity. That you are what you know.That you had to exercise your mindfor it to develop � just like the body.

They believed that the pursuit ofknowledge didn�t end when you leftacademic walls but was a life-longendeavor and that, as your knowl-edge grew so would your wisdom,and thus your enjoyment of this life� your humanity.

And for them, as I hope for us �these knowledge seeking minds inhealthy bodies offered the bestchance of achieving not only a virtu-ous lifetime but a beautiful soul readyto approach God.

Balanced men will not poison theirbodies with tobacco, drugs, exces-sive alcohol, will not be brutes totheir fellow men with meanness ofany sort, will not disrespect women,will not allow hate to poison theirview of their fellow man, hating be-cause they are different � differentrace, different religion, differentethnicity, different sexual orientation� because Balanced Men know weare all made in God�s image.

This is an ancient failing of the Greeks; the constantorganizing of factions against each other and theireagerness to bring about the downfall of those who seemsuperior to them have ruined Greece. PHILANTHROPIA

The Greek historian of the Roman period, DiodorosSikeliotes, writes that the Greek city-state of Acragtas, inSicily, was a most humanitarian city. It had a total popu-lation of some 200,000 people in the last quarter of thefifth century BC. The city as well as its territory was veryprosperous but the prosperity was used to benefit not onlythe city�s population but many strangers, travelers, andguests. Empedokles, the philosopher, a native, confirmsthat Acragtas was �havens of mercy for strangers� and thepeople there �careful to perform good deeds.�The best illustration of an Acragantine philanthropist wasTellias, a wealthy man, �who had in his mansion a consid-erable number of guest chambers and used to station ser-vants before his gates with orders to invite every strangerto be his guest.� But �there were also many otherAcragantines who did something of this kind.�Diodoros relates another example of Tellias� hospitality.�Once when five hundred cavalry from Gela arrived thereduring a winter storm� Tellias entertained all of them byhimself and provided them all forthwith from his ownstores with outer and under garments.�This very great philanthropist was �quite plain in appear-ance, and wonderful in character.� He possessed also avery sharp sense of humor. Once we had been dis-patched on an embassy to the people of Centuripa in Sic-ily. When he came forward to speak before the Assembly,the multitude broke into a foolish laughter as they sawthat in appearance he did not meet their expectations. ButTellias, interrupting them, said: �Don�t be surprised, for itis the practice of the Acragantini to send to famous citiestheir most handsome citizens, but to insignificant andmost paltry cities men of their kind.�Athens, too, enjoyed the reputation of a benevolent city.Plutarch writes that Kimon, the son of Miltiades - the heroof Marathon - was a rich man but the money, which hehad earned honorably, was spent not selfishly but on hisfellow citizens. �He had all the fences on his fields takendown, so that not only poor Athenians but even strangerscould help themselves freely to whatever fruit was in sea-son. He also provided a dinner at his house every day, asimple meal but enough for large numbers. Any poor manwho wished could come to him� Kimon�s generosity wason a scale that surpassed even the traditional hospitalityand benevolence of the Ancient Athenians.�Philanthropia in the sense of love in service and action,became a striking feature of Christian Hellenism. The il-lustrations are numerous: persons like Basil the Great, theDeaconess Olympias, John Chrysostom and JohnEleemon of Alexandria are well known as great humani-tarians. But how many know of Philaretos of Pontoswhose memory is observed on December 1st? Philaretos�wealth consisted of several hundreds of cows, bulls,horses, mules, thousands of sheep and many acres ofland. Nevertheless, he used his wealth for the common-wealth and for the underprivileged. His biographer haspreserved an interesting episode. Once Philaretos �in-structed his wife and daughters to prepare a great ban-quet,� explaining that he expected �royal visitors.� Hisfamily understood this to mean that the Emperor and hiswife, together with the imperial court, were to be theguests. But Philaretos had quite different visitors in mind.Since his purpose was to practice the Lord�s Command-ment, he went to the agora and invited to the festivity onehundred cripples, amputees, sick people, strangers andpoor. The ladies of the household, who had made extraefforts to prepare an elaborate dinner, became frantic andexceedingly angry. Nevertheless each poor visitor enjoyeda hearty meal and received a generous amount of money.(part III in the next issue)

Most of the priests in these smaller par-ishes are married with families and they would not beable to survive with the very limited remunerationthese smaller parishes provide.Without the vital assistance of Leadership 100, atleast six more parishes of this Diocese would haveno priests to serve them. Presently, the parishes of

this Diocese without full-time priests are Fort Worth,Galveston, Port Arthur and Wichita Falls in Texas;Craig, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, and Puebloin Colorado; Overland Park and Wichita in Kansas;Missoula, Montana; Bayard and Grand Island in Ne-braska; Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Casper, Wyoming.Thanks to Leadership 100, full-time priests are nowassigned to Lubbock and San Angelo, Texas; Boul-der, Colorado; and Great Falls, Montana. Hopefullythis assistance can expand in the oncoming future toColorado Springs, Colorado; Wichita, Kansas; SantaFe, New Mexico; and Casper, Wyoming.It is a sad reality that in the minds of a good numberof our people in this Diocese they have no conceptof a diocese or Archdiocese. Slowly we have beenmaking progress in attempting to network the peopleof our forty-eight parishes, and for them to have astrong awareness of the fact that we are an Archdio-cese of over 500 parishes and that they are a vitalpart of the body of Orthodox Christians.This growing awareness will translate into a greatergenerosity among our people in providing a liberalityof gifts for the work of the Church.In order for me to succeed in this endeavor, I have acapital campaign in progress in order to raise fundsfor a permanent Diocese Center here in Denver, whichwill provide an even greater awareness of our holy Ap-ostolic faith in the plains and mountain states. Charlesis a kind, understanding, sensitive person whocan relate to these couples.Mr. Jerry Lorant, an attorney, Archon, memberof Leadership 100 and co-founder of GOYA ishimself very familiar to the challenges of an in-terfaith marriage. However, he believes that theinterfaith marriage challenge is a blessing andthat blessing is �being handed to us on a plat-ter to embrace and bring others into the fold ofOrthodoxy.� He indicates that this has neverbeen addressed before like it is today with Arch-bishop Demetrios who clearly recognizes the

necessity to embrace all people of all faiths.�We live in a secular, global society and peopleare going to intermarry. We have to go wherethe rubber hits the road and do something fastor else we risk losing our life and blood of theChurch.��Greek Orthodoxy is not simply something thatits adherents do on Sunday morning,� says Fr.Charles, adding, �It is more like a lifestyle thataffects each moment of a person�s life. If prac-ticing Greek Orthodoxy is of central importanceto one�s self-understanding and well being, thenthis question takes on greater significance andshould be carefully addressed by a Greek Or-thodox Christian thinking about entering into aninterfaith marriage.�Fr.
