List of Speakers

Ann Katherine Isaacs is professor from University of Pisa, National EHEA expert; ECTS/DS Counsellor, Erasmus+ Ambassador and Tuning Expert. She is professor of Early Modern History at the University of Pisa until 2013. Ann Katherine Isaacs has led or participated in key projects in international research and the modernization of higher education. A participant in the ECTS pilot project from 1989, she coordinated the European History Networks from 1999 to 2012; she has been deeply involved in the

Bologna Process and the Tuning Process around the world (Europe, Latin America, Canada, USA, Russia, and Central Asia). Recently she completed a large-scale Tempus project to build a Central Asian Higher Education Area (www.tucahea.org) aligned with the European Higher Education Area; she is ECTS/DS counselor, Bologna expert, and Erasmus+ Ambassador for Italy.

António Rendas is the Rector of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa since January 2007. He was born in Lisbon in 1949 and graduated in Medicine in 1972. He obtained his PhD at the Cardiothoracic Institute of the University of London in 1977. He was Research Associate in Pathology at the Harvard Medical School and at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, in Boston, USA, in 1978. He is a Full Professor of Pathophysiology since 1982 at the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS). He was Director of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (1983-

1986), Vice-Dean of FMS between 1990 and 1996 and Dean of the same institution from 1996 until 2006. In March 2010, he was elected President of the Portuguese Council of Rectors, a position he held until September 2014. He is also advisor of the Consultative Council for Scholarships of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and member of the Executive Council of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe. In the last two decades, he developed expertise in university government and management at European level as member of the Council of European Universities Association and member of the UNICA Steering Committee.

CAI Run, Chinese Ambassador to Portugal. Mr. Cai Run is the Chinese Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Portugal since 2015. Mr CAI holds a Master in law degree. From 1991 to 1999, he worked in the Bureau of North American, Oceanic and Scandinavian Affairs as well as the Research Office of International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCCPC) as deputy director and director. From 1999 to 2000, Mr. Cai was

the deputy mayor of the Binxian County of Shaanxi Province. From 2000 to 2005, he worked as Director, Deputy Inspector, Assistant Director-General and Director-General for Policy Research and General Affairs of the Office of the CCCPC Leading Group for Foreign Affairs. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Cai was the Minister-Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Washington. From 2008 to 2015, he worked as Deputy and Director-General of the Department of Policy Planning of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chang Zhu is the LEAD Project Manager. She is professor in Educational Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Prof. dr. Chang Zhu coordinates the LEAD (Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education) project (from 2015-2018); and from 2013-2016 She was project coordinator of the EU-China DOC project under the EU Erasmus Mundus Program. Prof. Chang Zhu is director of the EU-China Higher Education Research Center (ECHE), the Online and Blended

Learning Competence Center, and the Belgian Director of the Confucius Institute at VUB. She is promoter of several key fundamental research projects in the field of higher education, educational innovation, online and blended learning, MOOC, ICT-supported learning and social inclusion. She has published over 100 scientific articles in international high impact journals.

Claire Morel is the Head of Unit for international cooperation at DG Education and Culture of the European Commission, with particular focus on the international dimension of Erasmus+ programme and international policy dialogue in higher education. She has worked several years on academic cooperation with the EU's neighbouring countries. Before joining the European Commission, she worked at the European Training Foundation, and agency of the EU based in

Turin, on the modernisation of vocational education and training systems in the Eastern neighbouring countries. She then moved to DG Education and Culture (DG EAC) of the European Commission where she worked for many years for the Tempus programme.

Daniel Traça is Dean and Full Professor at Nova School of Business and Economics, the same school he graduated from in Economics in 1990. He holds a PhD from Columbia University in New York. Currently he is also a Visiting Professor at INSEAD (France and Singapore). He was also visiting Professor at Solvay Brussels Schools (Belgium) between 1991 and 2008, where he was also a Vice-President and Director of the MBA Program. Vlerick School of Business (Leuven, Belgium), KDI School of Management and Policy (Seul, South Korea) and Graduate Institute of International

Economics (Geneva, Zwitzerland) are other institutions where he worked as Visiting Professor. He also worked as a consultant for World Bank Group and the European Commission and has developed research in the area of Globalization and Economic Development. As Dean of Nova School of Business and Economics since 2015, he is focused on the development of a global business school based on good quality teaching, international exposure and connected to the marketplace and the companies. As part of this strategy, Nova SBE is moving to a new campus in Carcavelos in 2018.

HUANG Haijun is Vice President Academic & International, Beihang University. Prof. HUANG is a full professor and Cheung Kong Scholar at Beihang University. Before December 2015, he had served as Executive Dean of Beihang’s Graduate School and dean of the School of Economics and Management. Prof. HUANG received his PhD in transport operations research from Beihang in 1993. His research interests include road traffic flow models, transport network modeling, travel behavior analysis and congested road-

use pricing. Prof. HUANG is the IAC member of ISTTT.

Jacques Lanarès is Vice-Rector of the University of Lausanne since 2006. Lanarès is in charge of Quality, Human Resources, and Development of Teaching and eLearning. He studied Neuropsychology and obtained his PhD in Psychology from the University of Geneva. Since 2010, he is a Professor at the University of Lausanne (Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and Lifelong Learning). He is involved in Quality matters on the national and international levels. He chairs the

Quality Delegation of the Swiss Rectors' Conference and is Member of the Swiss Accreditation Council. Prof. Lanarès also serves as Quality Expert for several organisations such as the European Association of Universities (EUA/IEP), European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), World Bank and various national accreditation agencies (Belgium, Finland, France, Ireland, Lithuania).

Jan Cornelis is former Vicerector International Policy of VUB from October 2012-Sep. 2016. Prof. Jan Cornelis was also Chairman of the VLIR commission on international policy. In 2001-2008, he was Vicerector for R&D at VUB, in 2009 he became deputy head of cabinet in the Ministry of Science Policy and Innovation for 6 month, he then acted as academic coordinator Knowledge Innovation and Technology Transfer at VUB. He received in 2015 the Chinese state friendship

award and previously a similar award of the province of Shaanxi for his early involvement in cooperation with Chinese universities including technology transfer. Prof. dr. Jan Cornelis is professor in digital image processing, medical imaging and electronics, coordinator of research group IRIS (computer vision, image processing). His current research interest covers image and video compression, and medical imaging.

Jiang WU, was Foreign Member of Academy of Architecture (France), planner and 1st class registered architect of China, now the Executive Vice President of Tongji University, Shanghai. Prof. WU is the chairman of Shanghai Urban Planning Association, vice chairman of Urban Planning Association of China, vice chairman of Shanghai Architecture Society, and the Steering Council Member of the Architecture Society of China (ASC)

from 2003. And from 2010,he was elected as the Steering Committee Chairman of the Global University Partnership for Environment and Sustainability in Nairobi (GUPES).From 2003 to 2008, Wu was the deputy director general of Shanghai Municipal Urban Planning Administration Bureau. In the past 20 years, Wu has published more than 10 books and more than 70 articles in his research fields.

Jianmin LI is Minister-Counsellor, Head of Education and Culture Office of the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union. In 2011, Jianmin Li took up his post as Minister-Counsellor and Head of the Education and Culture Office at the Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the European Union. Prior to this position, from 2006 to 2011, he worked as Deputy Secretary-General of the China Scholarship Council. In the period from 2001 until 2006,

Jianmin Li held the position of Education Counsellor, Head of Education Office, at the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Sydney, Australia.

João Sàágua is currently Vice-Rector for Academic Management and International Affairs. Previously he was, for eight years, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences. During his two mandates as Dean, the Faculty became the leading school in the area at national level, and a competing candidate in several fields at European level. He is, for more than eighteen years, Vice-Director of Nova University Institute of Philosophy. His research is focused Logic and, more

recently, on “values, rational decision and social justice”. He is/was Principal Coordinator of research projects, with funds adding up to more than 400.000 euros. He has been an academic for 37 years, and Full Professor of “Logic for Humanities” for 14 years. He was a “Visiting Philosopher” at Oxford University (University College, Sub-faculty of Philosophy) during the academic year of 1995-6, with a Calouste Gulbenkian fellowship. He collaborates regularly with Universidade Agostinho Neto (Angola), in the Master in Philosophy Program, were he teaches “Practical Philosophy” and “Philosophy and Society”. He was a consultant for curriculum innovation at Cape Verde University.

Lexian FANG is the Director of the Department of International Politics, School of International Studies, Renmin University of China (RUC). He got his Ph.D in political science in 2003 at RUC. Prof. Fang was visiting scholar to University of Kent at Canterbury,UK, University of Durham, UK and Cornell University, US. He is also Senior Research Fellow Associate and member of Academic Board at Centre for European Studies, Renmin University of China; Senior researcher

at Center for Peace and Development Studies of China; Member of the Council for Asia-Africa Development & Exchange Society of China; Senior Research Fellow on China-EU Relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing. His major research fields include: European Integration and EU Foreign Policy; China-Europe Relations; IR theories and Chinese Foreign Policy.

Liu Chenggong, Vice President, Fudan University; Deputy Dean, Fudan Development Institute. Dr. Liu’s research interests lie in higher education and institutional research. He has been a visiting scholar at Macquarie University and Valparaiso University, doing higher education management studies. He has served as Director of the Planning and Strategy Office, Director of the Academic Discipline Development Office, and Director of the President’s Office before he became

Vice President of Fudan University in 2013.

Long Fenjie is the President of Guizhou Institute of Technology. He has studied in the Civil Engineering Department of Tsinghua University and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree of Engineering in Tsinghua University. In 2008, He received his PhD from College of Urban and Environmental Science, Peking University. Then he served as a visiting scholar in the City University of New York in 2012. He was promoted to be a doctoral supervisor of Tsinghua University. In

2012, He serves as President of Guizhou Institute of Technology (GIT) and presides over the whole administration work of GIT. He focuses on urbanization and higher education management, and has hosted a number of key academic research projects such as key and general programs of National Natural Science Funds of China, major projects of National Philosophy and Social Science Fund.

Luciano Saso (Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy) received his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Sapienza University in 1992. Prof. Saso coordinated several research projects in the field of pharmacology and has been referee for many national and international funding agencies and international scientific journals in the last 25 years. Prof. Saso has extensive experience in international relations and he is currently Vice-Rector

for European University Networks at Sapienza University of Rome. In the last 15 years, he participated in several projects including IMS2020, EGRACONS, IMOTION, BUCUM, UZDOC, TRAIN and has been speaker and chair at many international conferences organised by UNICA, SGroup European Universities' Network, EAIE and the European Association of Erasmus Coordinators. Prof. Saso assumed the role of Member of the Steering Committee of UNICA for two mandates (2011-2015) and he was elected President for the period 2016-2019 during the UNICA General Assembly in October 2015.

Maria Fernanda Rollo is currently the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education. She was born in 1965 in the Republic of the Congo. She holds a PhD and aggregation in Contemporary History by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (FCSH). She is also Associated Professor with an aggregation at the Department of History. Researcher and President of the Institute of Contemporary History of FCSH, she

coordinated the Pedro Hispano Program – Doctoral Studies in Social Sciences and Humanities in the same school. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Gulbenkian’s Program for Language and Portuguese Culture of Calouste Gulbenkian’s Foundation. She also coordinated research projects and has several publications in the areas of Portuguese historic research in the twentieth century, Portuguese economic history and society and historic innovation and scientific organization in Portugal.

Maryam Hansson Edalat, after receiving her PhD in Biochemistry, she was granted a Marie Curie fellowship (FP6) by the European Commission for a post-doctoral training at ETH Zurich. Having mostly had American collaborations during her graduate studies, the Marie Curie fellowship was the first time she was exposed to the EU research program. On her return to Sweden (2008) she discovered research management and administration as a profession. She is currently Head of

Research Support Office at Stockholm University with responsibility for research funding & ethics and internationalization.

Meliha Benli Altunışık is a Professor in the Department of International Relations, Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara where she is also Vice President responsible for Academic Affairs. She was a Fulbright Scholar at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University in 1988-89 and received her Ph.D. in political science from Boston University in 1994. Dr. Altunışık was a resident Fulbright scholar in the Middle East Institute in

Washington, DC from January to June 2003. Her research interests include Middle East politics, Turkey’s foreign policy towards the Middle East, IR theory and International Relations of the Middle East. Professor Altunisik is the author of Turkey: Challenges of Continuity and Change, and many other publications.

Melita Kovačević is EUA-CDE Steering Committee Chair. Prof. dr. Kovačević initiated the establishment of a joint program on master level Middle European Interdisciplinary Master Program in Cognitive Science on the level of the University of Zagreb. Prof. Kovačević has been involved in Higher Education reform on university, national and European level. She has been a member of numerous national and EU bodies, working groups as well as she organized and participated in related activities. Prof. Kovačević has worked in a

multitude of European and American universities as a researcher, senior scholar or as invited lecturer. Her main research interests are cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, cognitive neuroscience and language pathology.

Michael Gaebel is the Director of the Higher Education Policy Unit at the European University Association based in Brussels, which focuses on issues related to higher education learning and teaching, including the Bologna Process, lifelong learning, e-learning and MOOCs, internationalisation and global dialogue. He is also an Academic Expert of SPHERE project: Support and Promotion for Higher Education

Reform Experts, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. Michael Gaebel joined the EUA in 2006 and was in charge of developing EUA’s international strategy and global exchange and cooperation. His previous experience includes working for more than a decade in higher education cooperation and development in the Middle East, the former Soviet Union and Asia. From 2002 to 2006, he was the European Co-Director of the ASEAN-EU University Network Programme (AUNP) in Bangkok. Michael graduated with a Master degree in Middle Eastern Studies as well as German Literature and Linguistics from the Freie University Berlin, Germany.

Patrícia Rosado Pinto is the Head of NOVA Doctoral School and she is a member of the NOVA Rectoral Team, as Pro-Rector. She coordinates the Professional Development Unit for Academic Staff at NOVA where she has been responsible for organizing and delivering transversal pedagogical courses dedicated to the academic staff and for producing pedagogical documentation to support the teaching activity at the university. She holds a PhD in Education (Teachers’ Training) and at Faculdade de Ciências Médicas/NOVA

Medical School (NMS) she has been responsible for the Medical Education Office where she has been running Higher Education teachers’ training courses for the last twelve years. She is also an invited Professor at NMS where she teaches academic skills. She has been involved in several national and international Continuing Medical Education programmes and in educational consultancy activities. Her fields of expertise and publication are Medical Education and Teaching & Learning in Higher Education.

Paulo Ferrão is President of the Board of Directors of the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). He had been the director of the MIT-Portugal programme since 2006, a strategic partnership set up between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and several Portuguese universities and research centres, supported and funded by FCT. Paulo Ferrão is Full Professor at the Instituto Superior Técncio (IST) of the Universidade de Lisboa, where he leads the IST Energy Initiative, the PhD Programme in Sustainable Energy Systems and the IN+ research centre, for Studies in Innovation, Technology

and Policy Research. With a widely acknowledged international career, Paulo Ferrão is a member of the U.S. National Academies Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability, of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, where he also sits on the Committees on Pathways to Urban Sustainability and on Sustainability Linkages in the Federal Government. His scientific interests are focused in the areas of energy and industrial ecology. In this framework, Paulo Ferrão coordinated the working groups that established Portuguese plans for waste management.

Seppo Hölttä is Professor of Higher Education Administration and Finance; Head of the Higher Education Group, University of Tampere, Finland. Prof. dr. Seppo Hölttä is currently at the University of Tampere in Finland. His disciplinary basis is in economics, and his research focuses on higher education administration and finance. He is the head of the Higher Education Group (HEG) based at the University of Tampere. He has a long career in

university administration, director of planning and development at the University of Joensuu in the 1990s. He has also worked as a head of international affairs of the Helsinki University of Technology and an officer responsible for planning and budgeting at the University of Turku. He worked as a visiting researcher at the University of California Los Angeles in 1986-1988 and as a Fulbright scholar at Claremont Colleges in 1985 and at Michigan State University in 2006.

Serge Jaumain is the former Vice-Rector for the International Relations and Communication Strategies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles since 2006. He holds a Master degree in History (ULB and University of Ottawa) and a PhD in History (ULB). He was President of the International Council for Canadian Studies (2001-2003) and of the International Association of Quebec Studies (2013-2015). In 2005 Prof. Jaumain received the Governor General's International Award

for Canadian Studies and in 2013 he was awarded with the “Insigne du Mérite” from the University of Montréal. He is also Full Professor of Contemporary History and teaches courses focused on the history of Belgium and North America. Since 2013 he is a Member of the UNICA Steering Committee.

Tania Lima is the Director of Global Engagement at King's Worldwide, King's College London. She holds a BSc in Biology from Universidade de Sao Paulo. She did her research for a PhD in Molecular Biology at New York University, where she was also a post-doctoral fellow. She worked as an annotator of microbial genomes and subsequently as Programme Head at Swiss-Prot in Geneva, Switzerland from 2001 until 2008. During her time at Swiss-Prot she participated in several international collaborative initiatives in genomics, bioinformatics and proteomics, as well as the training of

researchers from Japan, Brazil and the U.S.A. Tania was appointed Science Operations Manager at the National Cancer Research Institute in London in 2010, where she led NCRI's international collaborations in cancer research, with a particular focus on international consortia and global partnerships. Prior to her current position, she worked as Assistant Director of Programmes & Operations at the Universities UK International, overseeing scholarship and research collaboration programmes. She was appointed Programme Director for Science without Borders UK in June 2012.

Vito Borrelli is Head of Sector for the Jean Monnet Actions under Erasmus+ in DG Education, Youth, Culture and Sport (EAC) since early 2013, after over two years as Head of Section for the Erasmus Mundus programme. He is also responsible for China in EAC, in charge of the coordination of the EU-China High Level People-to-People Dialogue (HPPD). He cooperates closely with the European External Action Service, notably as concerns higher education matters and

China-related issues. He has many years of experience at the European Commission, where he has worked since 1994. Before taking up his current responsibilities, he was involved in information and communication activities and the management of the Leonardo da Vinci vocational training programme.

Weiping HUANG, Professor, Centre for European Studies, Renmin University of China; Professor of Economics, Jean Monnet Chair and co-Research Director of the Centre for European Studies, Renmin University of China. He also serves as a member of the University Council and Academic Committee, Renmin University, China member of the Brussels Academy for China and European Studies (BACES), and Director of Study Centre for the World Economy at Renmin

University. His main research interests include world economy, international trade and finance, European and comparative regional integration, and Chinese economic development. His recent publications include Comprehensively Deepening Reform and the World Economy (China Renmin University Press, 2015), and Courses and Opportunities: The New Coordinate of Chinese Economy (China Renmin University Press, 2016), A Win-Win Future (Mc Graw Hill, 2016).

Yichuan Yuan, was former vice-president international relations of Yunnan Normal University and professor of English Language and Literature of Yunnan Normal University, China; EdD graduate (La Trobe University, Australia, 2006), and concurrently panel member of English Teaching Guidance Committee for Higher Education of Chinese Ministry of Education. His recent research interest includes Applied Linguistics, SLA (Especially attitude, motivation, strategies).

YU Xuemei was appointed as Director of the International Office of Tongji University (Shanghai, PR China) in April 2014. She got her PHD degree at the Technical University Berlin (Germany) in 2004 majored in Intercultural Communication and German as foreign language. She started her career in July 1993, working in succession as Dean of School of International Education, Director of Deutschkolleg of Tongji University. She worked for Ministry of Education of China from 1997 to 1998 in Peking and researched as Fellow of Alexander

von Humboldt Foundation at the Technical University Berlin from 2007 to 2008.

Zhengrong HU is Ph.D. and Professor of Communication at Communication University of China (CUC) in Beijing. He is the President of CUC (2016-) and the Director of the National Centre for Communication Innovation Studies (2000-). His research areas include media policy and institutional transition, media development strategies, political economy of communication, international communication and new media. He has published widely in both English and Chinese, and has been leader for a number of major research projects on China’s media development and international communication. His

most recent publications are two chapters on China in Mapping BRICS Media (2015, Routledge) and The International History of Communication Studies (2016, Routledge), respectively. He is the chair of Journalism and Communication Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council’s Committee of Degrees and the Advisory Committee of Journalism and Communication Education of Ministry of Education in China. He was also the Chair of China Communication Association (2006-2010), board member of several international leading journals, and visiting professors at world top universities (e.g. Harvard University in 2005) and an Honorary Doctorate of University of Westminster.

Zhihong YI, Vice President, Professor of Finance, Renmin University of China. She received her bachelor and Master’s degrees in Economics in 1986 and 1989, and a Ph.D. degree in Finance in 2000 from Renmin University of China. She had also served as a visiting scholar at Harvard University from 1997 to 1998 and at University of Michigan in 2004. Her research interests include corporate finance, institutional investors and consumption economics. She has been teaching at Renmin University of China since July 1989. She was Deputy Director of the Trade and Economics Department of Renmin University of China from

November 1994 to February 1996; Deputy Director of Academic Affairs Office from November 1998 to July 2002; Assistant Dean of the Graduate School from July 2002 to December 2005; Dean of Business School from December 2005 to May 2012. She became Vice President of RUC in May 2012. She also served as Associate Director of the National Committee of Business Education, and Committee Member of the 5th National Committee of MBA Education, Vice President of the China Society for Finance and Banking, Board Member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), Member of the Initial Accreditation Committee (IAC) of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
