with a commitment to multiple perspectives, social and

environmental justice, and intercultural understanding.

PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

The official 2003-04 school year ended on June 30th, and the appropriate moment has come to reflect on theCollege’s 41st year. This has been a year rich with achievement. Now it is time to enjoy the fruits of our labor, toenvision the next stages of our advancement, and to reaffirm the institutional values which have sustained the life ofand given direction to our community. Our stated commitment is to move forward in a manner that is deliberate, creative and focused. With all of us working together this past year, we have advanced the wider recognition of themerits of the College and made Pitzer stronger than ever before — without changing its character.

What mode of reflection should we choose to gauge our banner year? The unprecedented successes established in admissions and advancement? Our standing as one of America’s most diverse liberal arts colleges? Our enhancednational profile within academic circles as well as the popular media? Or do we return to a more intimate space, theultimate measure of success — an educational moment of furthering the personal growth and awareness that ourCollege was founded to provide? This last reflection is beautifully expressed by Jessica Guterman, a 2004 graduate, who thoughtfully mirrored her time at Pitzer in a moving letter to me: “The only thing that I have ever known about myself, and the way I wish to contribute to the world, is that I want to improve quality of life . . . My Pitzereducation has reinforced that in me and broadened it, as I finally realize that I can fulfill my social responsibility inany way I choose, as long as I choose to do so . . . One of the most valuable things that I have learned here at Pitzeris that I can change the world from any angle.” Jessica’s letter assures us that as more of the world learns of whoand what we are, it will encounter a broadly applicable model for thought and action.

Our social and civic responsibility also remains strong through our charter membership in Project Pericles. As aPericles member, Pitzer commits to include education for social responsibility and participatory citizenship as anessential part of our educational programs.

Yes, this year it felt as though everyone discovered Pitzer College. This year Pitzer was featured in The Wall StreetJournal, Chicago Tribune, Time magazine, Business Week, USA Today, the Christian Science Monitor, the Los AngelesTimes, and the Chronicle of Higher Education. We received more than 3,100 applications for 220 incoming first-yearclass spaces. As a result our acceptance rate was lowered by 10%, as only 39% of those who applied were admitted. We are now a difficult college in which to gain entry and, Alumni, the value of your degree has just increased appreciably. The College’s first comprehensive campaign will be completed early, and our $40 million goal was exceeded. I cannot emphasize enough how proud I am of all the alumni, friends, and foundations who believed in

campaign. Your efforts resulted in an unprecedented level of giving that would be the envy of somany colleges, and you have given special focus to the commitment to Pitzer of which I speak.

During Pitzer’s 41st year, we paused to review the impressive accomplishments of our graduates. Tocelebrate those achievements, Pitzer College created the Distinguished Alumni Award. Under the ableleadership of immediate past Alumni Association President Andy Goodman ’81, a committee ofalumni and faculty selected Debra Wong Yang ’81. Debra is the United States Attorney for theCentral District of California, serving 18 million people from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. She isthe first Asian American woman to serve as a United States Attorney. I am proud to have such a finerepresentative of Pitzer College distinguish herself in government service and look forward to con-tinuing to honor our successful graduates in the years ahead.

Our successes make for exciting news and I am happy to be able to deliver it to you. As ever, wemust thank and congratulate the scholars who are the heart of the institution — our truly superbfaculty. This year they have generated scholarship and received awards that have once againappropriately enhanced the recognition of Pitzer as a premier liberal arts college. In the spring ofthis year Alan Jones, Dean of the Faculty, held the College’s first Dean’s Reception to formally recognize faculty achievements. It was impressive to see the aggregate scholarship and creativityof the Pitzer faculty displayed in one place.

To advance the College “creatively” means that we must remain alive to opportunity and renew-al at a number of levels, so that when measured against other institutions we find that we excelnaturally as a result of worthwhile endeavor. Mark Twain, whom you will not be surprised to hearme quoting, said in his autobiography, “Life does not consist mainly — or even largely — of factsand happenings. It consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that is forever blowing through one’shead.” At Pitzer, we don’t set out to be record holders, but the ideas “blowing through” our institution often reflect upon our standing in the form of measurable and positive “facts.” PitzerCollege is the only highly selective liberal arts college in the nation to have 100% student partici-pation in a social responsibility requirement; to be ranked the 3rd most diverse private secularcoed national liberal arts college by U.S. News & World Report (out of 1,360 ranked colleges); to have seven Pitzer international programs and eight new international student exchanges; tohave eleven undergraduate students awarded Fulbright Fellowships in two years — making Pitzerthe national leader for Fulbrights for colleges our size — and to have five American SociologyAssociation Minority Fellows — setting an ASA national record.

Pitzer and supported us. We enjoyed a recordAnnual Fund drive, raising nearly $1.3 millionwith increased levels of giving among alumniand parents alike. It is important to recognizethe kind of deep strength we are witnessing here— the increasing coherence and commitment ofthe Community of Pitzer People worldwide. Animportant measure of pride in membershipwithin a community is tangible support. Thissense of increasing coherence is reinforced byrecord giving from staff, faculty, and the seniorclass. To members of the 2004 Senior Class: Ispeak for so many of us here when I say howtouched and honored we are by your spirited

Our banner 41st year has given us the means and momentum. Now we embark on the next academic year, which I consider a blueprint year. Yes, we begin planning the construction of thenew living and learning residence halls, and this summer we began the first year of a two-year cafeteria redesign and renovation. We thereby are building in creature comforts that will allowwell-fed and rested students to do even more exceptional work! Yet I intend the blueprint imageto apply more widely. Planning is under way to enhance teaching resources by increasing the totalnumber of faculty with five new faculty positions. This past year, the College created a five-yeartactical plan. This part of the blueprint will guide our energy and resources and will by its renew-able nature require us to continuously envision an inspired future for the College.

As we take stock of where we are and where we are going, I fully expect that our social commit-ment will remain before us. As we enjoy new levels of success and well-being, we are required nowmore than ever to recognize our privileged place in this world and the obligations of privilege. Whatdoes this mean? How do we do it? At Pitzer we believe that excellence can only be achieved throughdiversity, which is one of our core values. Taken as a whole, the Pitzer community of faculty, staffand students is a national leader in diversity among liberal arts colleges. That diversity brings arange of perspectives to bear on our search to understand ourselves and the world in which we live.I like the musings of one of our distinguished Durfee Fellows, Barry Lopez, as he faces the future:“There are simply no answers to some of the great pressing questions. You continue to live themout, making your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.” (Arctic Dreams).

Within the Pitzer community the important thing is that, individually and collectively, we remainengaged by the questions that have given us our particular mission to uphold.

To Our Future,

Laura Skandera TrombleyPresident

Admiss ion SuccessThis year Pitzer enjoyed the largest increase in applications in the College’s history, an extraordi-nary 28%. Last year the total number of applicants was 2,600 versus this year’s total, 3,100. Ourselective admission rate is even more impressive when placed in the context of the number ofinquiries (12,731) we received this year. The application profile of students was stronger than ever, and the distribution of applicants from across the United States expanded our national presence. This is the second year of Pitzer’s membership in a cohort group of only 45 of the most selectiveliberal arts colleges in the nation, those that accept fewer than 50% of applicants, reflecting aremarkable trend where in the space of just six years we decreased our acceptance rate from 72%to 39%. This was the first year our SAT optional policy was in effect, and Pitzer College was fre-quently mentioned as the West Coast leader in the SAT optional movement among elite nationalliberal arts colleges. The profile of our incoming first-year class is stronger than ever.

Record Annual Fund Giv ingThe Pitzer College Annual Fund broke through the ambitious goal of a 10% increase to reach thehighest level in the College’s history at $1,293,863, a 15% increase over the previous year. Giftsfrom alumni and parents to the fund grew at an even faster pace — 21% for alumni and an aston-ishing 38% for parents — growth never before experienced at Pitzer. While we are excited at thesize of the increase in this important asset for Pitzer, we are particularly pleased that it was accom-plished not by one very large gift but by increases in giving among many donors. Of all thosedonors who made gifts in both of the last two years, more than 37% increased their gifts by 10%or more and nearly a quarter increased their gifts by 50% or more. Our Board of Trustees con-tinued to lead the annual giving efforts and exceeded their ambitious goal. The on-campus com-munity supported the Fund with participation from faculty and staff totaling 90%, with 100%participation from a number of departments across the campus. The 2004 senior class raised morethan $6,000 — a senior class record — to support the Pitzer Book Scholarship Fund and a memo-rial fund for classmate Daniel Stevens. A record-setting 96% of all graduating seniors made a giftto this Fund. In all, the Annual Fund figures provide a concrete measure of what is happening atPitzer College. We have become a more cohesive community, proud of what we stand for, unwill-ing to accept second place in any forum.

above the ambitious goal set for it? That we reached that goal early, in advance of the proposedclosing date? It means that our institution has achieved a soundness, a maturity, and that it hasgathered to it strong friends who believe in its mission and trust in its future. This is an importantmoment in our history. Let us appreciate its full significance.

Academic Affa i rsIn 2004 academic affairs saw the creation of the Five-College Media Studies program. Pitzer, as thelead college in this exciting enterprise, has spearheaded the development of the only liberal arts pro-gram that links media production within a curriculum devoted to the experimental arts, social justice, and intercultural and international understanding. Could there be a more fitting environment for thestudy of the art of the message? A number of inspiring presentations took place on campus this year.Professors Barry Sanders and Sharon Snowiss organized an international symposium, the first in thenation, “Conversations: The Legacies of Ivan Illich,” where the keynote speaker was former Governorof California and current Mayor of Oakland, Jerry Brown; Barry Lopez, a renowned environmental-ist, essayist and short-story writer, addressed the social responsibility of the artist; Garrett Hongo, anationally acclaimed poet, gave a series of readings centered on his experiences as a Japanese Americanman coming of age in Hawaii; and Newsweek film critic and senior editor David Anson lectured onpopular culture. In the Nichols Gallery, there were a number of shows this year, including “EnvisioningThe Future,” a Judy Chicago collaborative; local artist Mark Domiani’s exhibition “The IsolatedDummy”; Professor Sheryl Miller’s “Tulips, Hearts and Distefinks: Folk Arts of the PennsylvaniaDutch”; and an inaugural Annual Alumni Exhibit, featuring the work of Shari Wallace ’94.

Campaign Clos ingThis spring saw an important milestone inPitzer fund raising history as the College surpassed the $40 million goal of its first com-prehensive campaign. We realize how great animpact the campaign has had on support forPitzer College. During the life of the campaign,$14 million was raised to support scholarshipsand $8 million for faculty positions. The finaltwo gifts for the new residence life projectincluded two of the three largest gifts to theCollege since its founding: $5 million from thePitzer Family Foundation and $3 million fromlife trustee Peter Gold and his wife Gloria. This year we said farewell to professor of French Harry Senn, who retired from Pitzer after 34 years. The College hired two new faculty in sociology, Kathy Yep and Beth Jennings, a newfaculty member in anthropology Leda Martins and a new mathematician David Bachman. Pitzeralso became the lead college for Joint Science and filled two new positions in Joint Science. JohnMilton was named Kenan professor of computational neuroscience and Diane Thomson wasappointed in biology/environmental science. Pitzer is an active member of a number of minorityassociations and organizations, and this past year joined the Consortium for a Strong MinorityPresence (CSMP). After a successful national search, we welcome Brian Yazzie Burkhart, a CSMPscholar who will offer courses in environmental studies/philosophy. Currently, the faculty are conducting a search for the first of what will be five new tenure-track positions at Pitzer —Chicano and urban studies.

Pitzer College received a $300,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to fund a proposal to developinternational exchange programs. These faculty-led exchanges will allow all Pitzer students desiringto study abroad the opportunity to do so. An expanded list of exchanges will send Pitzer students toAustralia, Canada, England, Germany, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and Turkey. For thiscoming year, we expect to send the largest number of students abroad in our College’s history.

Our students continue to make their mark on the intellectual landscape of the nation and theworld. This year ten Pitzer students were nominated and five were awarded Fulbright scholar-ships for travel and study abroad. The award winners were Julia Terlinchamp (Bulgaria); AriaStarus (Germany); Rachel Quaday (Korea); Edel Marie Jose (Philippines); and Matthew Williams(Netherlands). The total number of Fulbright Fellowships awarded to Pitzer over the past twoyears — eleven — established the College as the national record holder of Fulbright Fellowshipsfor colleges our size. Through the Fulbright process, the French government awarded a prestigiousteaching fellowship to Lalaina Rideout ’04. The President of Student Senate, Filiberto NolascoGomez ’04, received the prestigious Watson fellowship. Only 50 college seniors nationwide wereawarded the Watson this year. We also have two Coro fellowship winners — Vicenta Arrizon ’04and Gilbert Gonzales ’03 — chosen from a pool of 400 applicants nationwide. Seven membersof the Pitzer community, a record number, were awarded Avery China program grants. BrianneDavila ’04 was awarded Pitzer’s fifth Minority Fellowship from the American SociologicalAssociation (ASA). Pitzer holds the national record for ASA Fellowships.

OUR BLUEPRINT YEARThe task before us after four decades is to con-tinue to challenge preconceived ideas of whateducation means and to remain dedicated toour ideal of social change. Pitzer was foundedto reinvent the personal and intellectual experi-ence of learning. In so many important ways weconfound practical business models: We arenon-profit, we are labor intensive, and it maytake a lifetime before any “results” are derived.

And that is exactly why what we do is so important — to demonstrate that there is another way toview education, reality, life. As Ivan Illich recognized so well:

“We need an alternative program, an alternative both to development and to merely political revo-lution. Let me call this alternative program either institutional or cultural revolution, because its aimis the transformation of both public and personal reality.” (A Constitution for Cultural Revolution)

Friends, this report concludes with a favorite quotation from John Atherton, Pitzer College’s firstPresident, that is both prescient and inspiring: “Our mandate is to change the Universe.”

The following pages recognize the many individuals and organizations that provided support for Pitzer College during the past fiscal year. As the President mentionedin her report, it was a banner year for Pitzer College fund raising and there were many people responsible for the extraordinary success. The National Pitzer CollegeAnnual Fund Committee, under the able chairmanship of Pitzer trustee Deborah Bach Kallick ’78, led the efforts that resulted in the largest Annual Fund in Pitzer’s history. A complete list of the National Committee and additional Annual Fund volunteers can be found at the end of this publication.

Gifts from all non-governmental sources during the year totaled $4,346,861. This included Annual Fund support of $1,293,863, restricted support of $2,079,506, andgifts to the endowment of $973,493. As you look at the contributions of various constituencies, these totals reflect gifts for all three areas of support. We are grateful tothe many alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations and other organizations who helped the College set contribution records during 2003-04.

The Chair’s Circle comprises individuals who recognize and support the unique contribution Pitzer College makes to higher education. TheChair’s Circle provides recognition for those who responded with leadership gifts of $10,000 or more during the past year. These donors andtheir gifts do make a difference; helping the College achieve its mission of preparing students for fulfilling lives, careers, and participation in amodern and changing global society.

BUILDING AN EDUCATIONALCOMMUNITY FOR HOMELESS CHILDREN

This year Pitzer was one of five colleges nationwide to receive a 3M FoundationVision Grant. The $50,000 gift will be used over the next two years to support Pitzer’s ongoing partnership with the Ontario-Montclair School DistrictAfter School Program to address issues of literacy and stability for homeless chil-dren in Ontario, California. Now under the auspices of the Salvation Army, thisprogram provides an after-school program for children as well as life skills andparenting training for their families.

For populations who are highly mobile, education sometimes gets lost in theshuffle and reading problems may remain undiagnosed or unnoticed.Consequently, since 1998, with the help of faculty and staff linked with Pitzer’sCenter for California Cultural and Social Issues (CCCSI), students have operateda loosely structured mentoring and tutoring program to help the after-schoolprogram children cope with schooling changes. This new project will offer amore structured literacy intervention involving formal training through the schooldistrict, begin a community garden to give the children “roots” and teach thembasic principles of environmental science. CCCSI hopes to partner with doctor-al students in Claremont Graduate University’s Evaluation Program to assesswhether the program is helping the children attain and maintain appropriatereading levels.

For Pitzer students, this program fundamentally changes the basis of learning bysending them into the community, teaching them skills of respectful interaction, and providing a venue dedicated to reaching not just curricular goals but alsothose that have a greater social purpose and address issues they study in class.CCCSI Faculty Director Susan Phillips said: “Our students have so much heartand dedication; the trick is to find a partnership that can bring out their bestefforts to tackle complicated issues firsthand. A project like this can teach ourstudents not how much they know, but how much they have to learn about theworld and themselves.” The after-school literacy project will augment Pitzer’sacademic programs in child development, environmental studies, and/or mediastudies by providing “real world” hands-on training in literacy programming, working with homeless youth in a community setting, and providing an oppor-tunity to observe how evaluation impacts programming.

ICSCIndependent Colleges of Southern California (ICSC) is an organization that secures funding from foundations, corporations and indi-viduals to sustain operating needs and scholarships for its 17 member colleges and universities. Since 1953, ICSC has maintained a col-laborative partnership with Southern California businesses in support of private higher education through fund raising and other serv-ices. Pitzer College is a proud member of ICSC and extends its appreciation to the following ICSC donors.

FABIAN NÚÑEZ ’97 SCHOLARSHIPProfessor Jose Calderon and Chicano Latino alumni have established a Chicano Latino Annual Scholarship, namedin honor of Fabian Núñez ’97, the current Speaker of the California State Assembly. Núñez’s commitment to socialjustice and education serves as an inspiring example of the Pitzer College philosophy and vision. Throughout hispolitical career, Núñez, a Pitzer College New Resources alumnus, has instituted change and has made a real difference to the people of California. His accomplishments are vast, culminating in his recent appointment asSpeaker of the California State Assembly. Coming from humble beginnings and working his way up to one of themost powerful positions in state government, Núñez is a positive role model for all current and future Pitzer students.

“It is incredibly rewarding to know I have the confidence and trust of my colleagues in Sacramento,” Núñez said of his recent election as Speaker. “It is very humbling to have the ability to do something like that. For students at Pitzer, it says that regardless of your background and struggles, you must always aim high. You have to expectmore of yourself and work hard to achieve your goals. I am honored to be part of the Pitzer family. Pitzer is a college that, unlike many others, is active in its community. And that’s not just in terms of students being active. The College has a genuine connection to the community. The fact that it reaches out to people of color and theunderprivileged is a sign of how we all need to move forward. The future of Pitzer is the future for California.”

The Fabian Núñez ’97 Scholarship was established in spring of 2004; the first recipient will be named this fall and willbe recognized at the 2005 Chicano Latino Student and Alumni Dinner. This annual dinner provides an opportunityfor Chicano Latino graduates, current and prospective students, faculty, and staff to celebrate a sense of unitybetween themselves and Pitzer College.

Chuck Diaz ’75, a trustee of the College and one of the supporters of the scholarship, underscores the importanceof this fund at Pitzer. “The Fabian Núñez ’97 Scholarship is the first scholarship at Pitzer that has been designatedspecifically for a Latino student. Given the number of Latino students and alumni who make up the College community, it is critical that we ensure the success of this fund. Financial aid is of great importance to these deserv-ing students who could not attend the College, or who would have to incur burdensome financial debt throughloans, without this scholarship. Additionally, it is essential that Latino alumni sustain this scholarship; Latino alumnihave not been as supportive of the College as we can be. The Fabian Núñez ’97 Scholarship provides us with theopportunity to focus on a key fund raising effort. As former students, Latino alumni understand first-hand how dif-ficult it is to make those tuition payments and how necessary this scholarship fund is.”

scholarshipsFor many students, acceptance to Pitzer College is only the firsthurdle as they strive for academic success. A far more difficult chal-lenge comes in finding a way to pay for their education. Each year, many gifted Pitzer students find a way to meet that challenge withthe aid of scholarships funded by generous donors. Scholarshipfunds help Pitzer College provide aid for qualified students whowould most benefit from a uniquely Pitzer education. We are thank-ful to the many donors who have established or contributed in sup-port of named scholarships.

CELEBRATING A LIFEJaime Johnson ’00, a ray of Georgia sunshine, passed away because of complications of cancer two years ago. A dreamerand a wanderer throughout her sadly brief life, Jaime always displayed a heartfelt care for those she loved and boundlessenergy as she explored the world around her. Putting a smile on a friend’s face delighted her soul. She has left those whoknew her with great memories of her bright smile and her contagious curiosity about what life has to offer.

After the creation of Pitzer’s memorial garden, the David Bloom Garden of Remembrance, in 2003, Jaime’s family and friendsdecided to have her memory enshrined there as well. They established the Jaime Johnson ’00 Bench Fund. Gifts toward thememorial bench support the John R. Rodman Arboretum, a place Jaime and many of her Pitzer friends cherished.

Jaime’s advisor at Pitzer, Paul Faulstich, Professor of Environmental Studies, said, “Jaime’s spirit will never leave Pitzer. Oftenoutdoors, and always smiling, Jaime’s love of life was contagious. Her humor, optimism, and spunk made her a preciousgem on campus. She radiated joy and had a passion for adventurous learning, a learning that often led her into meaning-ful interactions with a variety of characters, from desert rats to urbanites. She always had something to learn from everyoneand every situation, and she gave so very much in return.

It is fitting that the Arboretum will be graced with a bench in Jaime’s memory. It will be a place where people will shareideas, joys and sorrows, and embraces. It will be a place where those of us who were fortunate enough to have known herwill quietly sit and reflect upon the magnificent person she was, and resplendent soul she is.”

LOYAL ALUMNI PROVIDE STRONG BASE FOR PITZER Why did you give back to Pitzer College? Is it to honor a professor or staff person who made an impact on your life?Perhaps it is knowing that a gift to Pitzer College enhances the value of your degree by helping improve the College’sranking in publications and in the eyes of foundations. Or, maybe, it is to help the next generation of students sothey can reap the benefits of the unique education that only Pitzer provides. Whatever your reason, the entire PitzerCommunity thanks all 1,944 alumni who supported Pitzer College last year.

While this publication honors all of Pitzer’s donors, there is a special group of alumni who have given to Pitzer Collegeevery year since their graduation. We are especially grateful to this dedicated group of alumni for serving as an exam-ple for others to follow. Here are the words of just a few of these dedicated graduates …

After leaving Claremont, Iris Levine Shuey, MD ’68 traveled to Turkey with the Peace Corps, made her way throughmedical school and finally settled in Providence, Rhode Island. Iris practices medicine, teaches at Brown Universityand chooses to spend some of her free time doing charitable work. She describes her time at Pitzer College as “afour-year exposure in thinking more critically, becoming confident in my choices, and learning to be willing to takechances.” When asked why she chooses to support the College, she responded, “I give because I feel deeply appre-ciative of what the community gave to me. It wasn’t concrete or financial. It was attitudinal. Pitzer nourished me withthis attitude: If you believe in a goal strongly enough, you will likely be able to achieve it.”

Judge Emily Stevens ’72, currently with the Los Angeles Superior Court, is serving her third year as a SupervisingJudge of the Juvenile Dependency Court. Emily’s memories of her experiences at Pitzer are very positive, and she isgrateful for both educational opportunities and the people she met. About the time Emily graduated, Pitzer was stillvery young. “Many other colleges were closing their doors,” Emily recounts. “I wanted there to always be a PitzerCollege and I felt that giving to the Alumni Fund was my way of helping.”

Since Mahesh Raj Mohan ’97 left Pitzer, he has established himself as a freelance writer after spending time workingas an advertising manager, writing print and television commercials, and working as a buyer of wholesale merchan-dise. He and his fiancée, writer and artist Sara Strohmeyer, are currently living in Portland, Oregon, where he spendsmost of his time writing, both fiction and non-fiction. When discussing why he has consistently supported Pitzer,Mahesh said, “I still believe in and want to support student self-government, which is what I worked passionatelytowards as a member of the Involvement Tower.”

As with most alumni, Antonia (Toni) Dow ’99 remembers fondly just how passionate the Pitzer College faculty areabout their work and how supportive they are of their students. One of her favorite memories of her time on cam-pus was a class taught by Professor Alan Jones, who is currently serving as Dean of Faculty. After graduation, Tonimade her way to Yale Graduate School, where she is studying pharmacology, with an emphasis on antidepressantsand stress. Toni strongly believes the education she received at Pitzer prepared her for Yale. When asked about herconsistent support of the College, Toni reports that this is her way of promoting Pitzer’s high quality educational envi-ronment, and she believes that the best way to show that support is to donate to the Alumni Fund.

These and Pitzer’s many other consistently loyal alumni create a living endowment for the College, providing theimportant financial edge that allows Pitzer to thrive. If you want to add your voice to those of Iris, Emily, Mahesh andToni, send us your comments at [email protected].

alumni giftsMany thanks to the 1,944 alumni who contributed more than$850,000 to the College. Alumni Fund gifts benefit every student andfaculty member by supporting a variety of important needs such as:scholarships and financial aid to help students afford a private educa-tion, faculty development, library acquisitions, technology updates, student activities and leadership programs, and capital expenditures tomaintain college facilities and grounds. This year the College receiveda record-breaking number of total dollars to the Alumni Fund. Thissuccess is a resounding demonstration of alumni commitment toPitzer. Each and every gift is important, and we thank the followingalumni for their meaningful contributions to that impressive sum.

PHONATHON YIELDS AMAZING SUCCESSThe Student Phonathon continues to break records at Pitzer. For the third consecutive year, students increased the number of alumni and parents theycontacted, with this year’s total, exceeding 3,300. The $221,000 in pledges fromnearly 2,000 donors represents a 42% increase in commitments and a 28%increase in donors over previous years.

While the Phonathon plays an increasingly important role in the Annual Fund, students continue to enjoy the connection with alumni and parents, sharing stories, and frequently gaining invaluable advice.

Phonathon students have one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs oncampus. They call year-round and always smile while they dial. Take the time tochat with Pitzer’s phonathon students; they call because they care. We are grate-ful to our phonathon callers from the past year, who are listed below.

FIRST-YEAR STEERING COMMITTEEUnder the leadership of Kaci Farrell ’07, the First-Year Steering Committee, a new volunteer group for students, wasestablished at Pitzer College. The mission of the committee is to educate undergraduates, particularly first-year students, about the importance of giving back to the College.

In 2003-04, the Committee’s fund raising efforts centered around a special Valentine’s Day drawing, made possibleby the generous support of Claremont businesses that donated gift baskets, gift certificates, and other items.Committee members and volunteers solicited classmates by going door-to-door through the residence halls, byposting fliers, and by telephoning. Through the efforts of First-Year Steering Committee members and volunteers, the group raised substantial resources to fund a book scholarship award, which will be allocated to a member ofthe Class of 2008.

The First-Year Steering Committee learned valuable lessons in philanthropy; members gained knowledge of thechallenges of volunteer work and of soliciting their peers. With the success of the 2003-04 First-Year SteeringCommittee, it is anticipated that fund raising for Pitzer by first-year students will continue as a practice on campusto encourage and advance the spirit of generosity at the College. Thanks to all who participated in this introduc-tory experience.

parents fundParents and grandparents of current and former students see firsthand the value of a Pitzer educationthrough the experiences of their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters. Donors to the ParentsFund choose to support Pitzer financially in recognition of the fact that tuition alone cannot cover all ofthe costs associated with a student’s education. Gifts to the Parents Fund help pay for financial aid andteaching, for sports and the arts, for computers and the campus — for all the things that sustain the Pitzerexperience for current and future students. We are grateful to the hundreds of generous donors who raisedmore than $1,800,000 for the Parents Fund.

faculty and staff campaignIn 2003-04, the faculty and staff at Pitzer achieved an extraordinary accomplishment — a record 90% madea financial commitment the College. Heartfelt thanks are due to this remarkable group of individuals whosupported this year’s Faculty and Staff Campaign. These members of the Pitzer College community raisedmore than $40,000 with 100% participation from 13 departments and offices across campus. In additionto the time, passion, and energy that they give every day to the College, their philanthropy demonstrates theircommitment to Pitzer.

The Campaign’s success would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of the Facultyand Staff Campaign Committee. Special thanks to: Michael Ballagh (Dean’s Office), Mark Crawbuck(Facilities), Tanya Eveleth (Advancement), Hal Fairchild (Faculty), Paul Faulstich (Faculty), Jim Lehman(Faculty), Fernando Martinez (Information Technology), Ignacio Montes (Dining Services), Loy Nashua(Student Affairs), and Brooke Yoshino (Admission).

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS LUNCHEONService-minded students, their families and alumni celebrated the generosity of Ann Bilodeau ’69 and DeborahBach Kallick ’78 at a luncheon in September of 2003. The Katie Lawson Memorial Award is made possible by Katie’ssister, Ann Bilodeau ’69, and family and friends of Katie Lawson ’73. This award provides stipends for students who plan to spend their summers serving the community. The Kallick Community Service Award was established by Deborah Bach Kallick ’78 and her family to encourage and reward students in community-focused activities. The recipient of this award is provided a monetary stipend after completion of an outstanding service project. Recipients of both awards are determined by the College’s Research and Awards Committee.

This year’s luncheon featured Graciela Vargas ’06, recipient of both the Katie Lawson Memorial Award and theKallick Community Service Award. Graciela shared stories of her summer project organizing and teaching an artclass for children. She used her awards to establish a beginning art class for underprivileged children to attend during part of their summer vacation from elementary school. Graciela hoped the project would “help transformhopeless boredom that often leads to despair into a richly rewarding and productive experience — one that willcarry forward in the lives of these children.” Funding from the award allowed Graciela to rent a small space and to purchase paints, canvas and other supplies. As a final project, students in her class constructed an art canvas from raw materials and presented a painting from their summer labor to Ann Bilodeau, who in turn askedthat the painting be shared with the entire Pitzer Community. Today, the painting is exhibited with other Pitzer artin the Gold Student Center.

Projects like these provide our students with the ability to look outside themselves and serve the community, bothdistinguishing qualities of a Pitzer education. We are grateful to alumni and friends of the College who support andrecognize students who engage in community service.
