Hon Zoe Bettison MPMINISTER FOR VOLUNTEERS

More than 920,000 South Australians volunteer formally and informally to assist schools, sporting clubs, community events, arts, cultural activities and casually providing a helping hand to someone in need. Combined, these hours total around 1.7 million volunteer hours each week, worth almost $5 billion each year.

Volunteering can also lead to opportunities to gain new skills, make new friends and even boost job prospects.

Recognising the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to communities was recently highlighted during annual National Volunteer Week celebrations. The theme Give Happy. Live Happy - highlights how helping makes the lives of others happier also benefits the volunteer.

Research has found that 95 per cent of volunteers relate their volunteering to feelings of wellbeing and greater health and happiness.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to volunteers, volunteer-involving organisations and everyone who makes up this worthwhile sector which makes our state an even better place to live.

Enjoy the Lead to Succeed Volunteering Conference 2017.

Hon Zoe Bettison MP Minister for Volunteers

His Excellency The Honourable Hieu Van Le AC Governor of South AustraliaVOLUNTEERING SA&NT PATRON

Welcome to the ‘Lead to Succeed’ Volunteering Conference 2017.

I am so pleased that this event is bringing together delegates from across South Australia and the Northern Territory, as well as national and international guest speakers.

What a wonderful opportunity to promote, celebrate and advance volunteering in our community!

In South Australia, around 920,000 people participate in some kind of volunteer work every year which is worth almost $5 billion to our economy. These are incredible statistics.

I extend my sincere thanks to you all, for your generous spirit that adds so much to our community.

There is growing research in Australia and overseas that volunteering helps people to live happier and healthier lives.

As a volunteer you devote your time and energy to serve your community, and by doing so, you also promote your own good health—what a wonderful combination.

Thank you all for taking the time to attend this conference and exchange experiences and best practices, ensuring more effective outcomes for volunteering in our society.

Your dedication to our community is greatly appreciated.

His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC Governor of South Australia
