An industrial laundry facility is not a sereneplace, but the noise does not bother one of

K-Bro’s newest employees, Linda Thongpheng. Shehad been looking for work for over two years, accord-ing to Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre, whichassisted in her placement.

Her experience in a hotel laundry facility made hera good candidate for K-Bro Linen Systems. OperationsManager Andrew MacKeen says he has a hard timeattracting candidates because of the noise (and heat). He was pleased when Island Deaf and Hard of HearingCentre approached him with the referral.

IDHHC’s Employment Program Coordinator AngelaMiranda checks on Linda regularly and contracted anASL interpreter to provide her client with job coach-ing. “Sometimes it’s hard to get the point across on apiece of paper,” says Andrew. “We had to bring theinterpreter back in here to do a bit of training, andLinda is a better employee because of it.”

If you are considering hiring a deaf or hard-of-hear-ing applicant, here are some tips for helping that em-ployee succeed:

Before a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Employee Starts

· Ensure upper-level management support. Discuss

with managers and supervisors the best ways tofacilitate integration.

· Clarify job requirements and job descriptions.

· Provide organizational literature for review be-

fore the interview.

· Provide a written itinerary if more than one per-

son is interviewing.

· Inform your receptionist that you are expecting

a deaf applicant.

· Prepare co-workers by reviewing communication

strategies.

Some people operate under the misguided assumption

that style trumps content when it comes to resumes.

This belief has caused many a job-seeker to use templates as

the foundation of their resumes. Resume templates (samples)

are easy to find on the Internet and a simple Google search

can turn up templates for teachers, forklift-drivers, book-

keepers, truck drivers and just about any occupation you can

imagine.

These templates are usually in Microsoft Word format and

can be quickly downloaded for free and adapted to meet your

needs. Some websites offer hundreds of templates to choose

from. So what's the harm? Many of the ones I've reviewed look

like they were created by somebody who had very few in-

sights into what belongs on a resume. On the Internet, it's

easy to claim an expertise you do not possess, but poor quali-

ty is just the tip of the template iceberg that wants to sink

your job search.

The most obvious problem is that many job-seekers use

these templates and employers can easily spot them. In fact,

with newer versions of Microsoft Word, an employer can use

the metadata to identify the source or author of the tem-

plate. So instead of a template helping your resume stand out

from the crowd, an employer sees a resume that looks like

many others in the pile that was created by somebody other

than the job-seeker. It's not the best first impression.

Another problem relates to content. A template is meant

to provide inspiration to a resume author. Because many job-

seekers are unsure of how to craft their content to present

themselves in the best light possible, they will often leave in

the default boiler-plate text. Instead of impressive accom-

plishments on a resume, the employer sees a mundane list of

job-duties. In the world of resume templates, every applicant

is hard-working, punctual and a team player. No wonder em-

ployers only look at a resume for a few seconds before mov-

ing on to the next.

So, for a job seeker who is in a hurry or who is unsure

about how to best present themselves on a resume, a tem-

plate is indeed a tempting presentation. It seems to solve the

problem of how to create a resume. However, this approach

undermines the real goal of getting invited in for an inter-

view. A resume that looks the same as a million others, full

of uninspiring content, is not likely to achieve this goal. For

help with creating an original resume that targets each op-

portunity contact your friendly neigbourhood Employment

Service Centre (Beacon Community Services, GT Hiring or

Worklink).

instructions on the application, it’s unlikely BC Transit is going to put youbehind the wheel of a bus.

If your resume could use some polishing, head to your local WorkBC Employ-ment Centre. Stu has a background in mechanical engineering and admitted thathis resume was garbage until Barb McLean at WorkLink got a hold of it. His fond-ness for WorkLink grew with each new workshop. In fact, he got so much out ofthe experience, he is making himself available for informational interviews tofellow WorkLink clients.

Stu’s universal advice: Practice punctuality! The BC Transit job applicationasks if you have arrived late to work and, if so, why. Get in the habit of showingup on time. “You’re paid by the minute. If you go on shift at 4:37, you pick up abus at 4:37. At 4:38, you’re late. Punctuality is a huge criterion,” he says. Be ontime for your shift, and BC Transit will make time for your family. Many of Com-munity Shuttle Operators are single parents who value the flexible schedule. Alloperators are guaranteed 25 hours a week, but most work closer to 37. The ben-efits are another perk for parents. Stu had full benefits within a matter of weeksof starting the job.

Stu admits that some routes are better than others. In the beginning, youdon’t have much choice in the matter. It’s all seniority based, so the most desir-able routes and schedules go to those who have been loyal to the corporation. Inanother few weeks, Stu’s training will be complete and the bus will be entirelyhis responsibility… just in time for Canada Day, when riders are in particularlyhigh spirits!

driver training program for transit opera-tors in Canada.

What BC Transit does want, accordingto Stu, are people with strong customerservice skills and an ability to avoid con-flict. Multi-tasking skills are also impor-tant, given the driver is required tooperate the vehicle safely while accept-ing fares, entering codes, and generallyfunctioning as the eyes of the communi-ty. “It’s more challenging than I thoughtit would be, because some of the custom-ers can be, well, challenging,” says Stu,who had no experience driving a bus priorto taking the job. But he says the corpo-ration puts safety first: “BC Transit ismore concerned about the operator’ssafety and quality of experience thangetting the fare.”

Promoting safety is nothing new to Stu.He used to own a scuba diving centre inSooke, but there came a time when hecouldn’t find the right people to hire. “Ididn’t trust the people who were apply-ing to take out my clients, and there wastoo much work for one man,” he sayswith a shrug. So he closed the shop. Helearned about the opening at BC Transitthrough the hidden job market; a friendin the retail industry tipped him off to it.He submitted an application in Novem-ber, and didn’t hear back for months. “Iassumed they had forgotten about me,and then in March, I got the call and theyhired me shortly thereafter.”

Stu says he’s come across more thana few people who are deterred by thelengthy application. His response: “If Itold you, I’ll pay you $50,000 a year tofill out 12 pages, would you do it?” Thelength of the application is intended toweed people out, he figures. He says itworks out to about 3 questions per pageand he answered each in an average oftwo sentences. Read the questionscarefully — if you cannot follow the
