The end-goal of blogging, engaging on social media, and building your audience is to ultimately get your “tribe” on to your email list so that you can keep communicating with them, build a relationship with them, turn them into paying customers - and make money.

Like they say “The money’s in the list.”

It’s not often someone buys your product or service online the very first time they see your offer. Usually they need to get exposed to it several times.

Therefore, you need a way to follow-up with them. To be able to do that, you need their contact information - at least their email address and perhaps also their name. (You can also build your list using e.g. Messenger on Facebook - but to keep it simple we’ll only focus on building an email list here.)

To build and grow an email list, you must set up a sales funnel.

A successful sales funnel begins with a Lead Magnet, also known as an opt-in bribe or a content upgrade.

It’s an incentive you offer to your potential buyers in exchange for their contact information, such as name and email. You may also ask for their phone number - and address, it depends on your lead magnet, your offer etc.

To attract high quality leads to opt-in to your funnel, you need a lead magnet that your audience finds irresistible. By sending them follow-up emails you can continue to develop a relationship with them. And when the people on your list find that your follow-up communication helps them to solve problems, to achieve a result they want - or they get a useful tool - you establish trust with your list (your tribe).

There are different types of lead magnets.

Many lead magnets are downloadable content such as an eBook, a report, a guide, a cheat sheet, a work sheet, a resource list or a checklist.

It can also be a video (or a video series), or a podcast, an audio or a software, a plug-in, a quiz, a survey, a contest, a coupon or a free trial.

What format and type of lead magnet depends on your business, what your lead magnet is about, and also how your ideal customer prefers to consume content (reading an eBook vs. watching a video for example) and also what the most effective way to deliver your lead magnet is.

1) Know exactly what your target market REALLY wants

• Think about what your potential prospects want and what they are attracted to, what information (or tool etc.) they most likely want so that they will enter their email address in your opt-in form without even thinking twice about it

• What questions are they seeking answers to

• What problems are they searching a solution to

• And: What are their “need to solve NOW” problems (very important!)

• What dreams and desires do they have

• What is one solution you can provide to one of these problems they have (or to fulfill a desire they have)? The solution should be simple, quick and easy to implement.

2) Speak directly to your ideal customer

• Your lead magnet must speak directly to your ideal customer’s needs and desired end result

• Address a specific high stakes problem, challenge or pain your customer wants to be solved - offer them a simple and quick solution

• Use their specific language

3) Be ultra specific (not vague)

• Focus on ONE problem, ONE challenge, ONE pain or ONE desire

• Offer ONE ultra specific solution to an ultra specific market

• Use specific examples, numbers, and results in your copy

4) Give immediate gratification

• The lead magnet should be quick and easy to consume - avoid long boring ebooks or too long videos

• People don’t want to spend hours to get the results, they want quick fixes and “magic bullets”

• Your lead magnet should assist in selling your offer - not be a road block in your sales funnel

5) High perceived value

• Just because your lead magnet is free, it mustn’t be perceived as “cheap”

• Make sure it provides great value to your target market and you MUST deliver on your promise

• You only have one chance to make a first impression, so make sure your lead magnet looks professional and gives a good impression

Remember: Don’t create a lead magnet with too many pages… most people will not make the effort to read it then. Instead, keep it short and concise, focus on giving a specific solution to a specific problem (or desire). Often 3-8 pages is perfect!
