Raman Spectroscopy for Field-Based Narcotics Identification Raman spectroscopy is a well-established forensic laboratory technique. The use of

Raman spectroscopy for narcotics identification is well within the capability of the

technique, making it suitable for use by law enforcement and other first responders.

Raman is accepted by the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs

(SWGDRUG) for the analysis of controlled substances. Raman handheld systems have been

increasingly used for field-based narcotics identification as opposed to traditional testing

methodologies, giving rapid results with minimal interpretation and sample preparation.

Advantages Over Traditional Field Testing Traditional testing methods have limitations in their applicability and pose numerous

disadvantages over modern Raman technology. Traditional testing kit consumables require

destruction of evidence for sampling, vast user interpretation, high recurring operating

costs, give relatively high false positive/negative rates, and pose potential injury to users

when breaking reagent vials. Alternatively, handheld Raman spectroscopy tools provide

non-destructive sampling for nearly all narcotics, extremely low false positive/negative

rates, identification directly through clear or opaque packing materials, numerous user

safety features and virtually no consumables or calibration.

TacticID®-N and TacticID®-GP for Narcotics Identification The TacticID–N is a field-ready handheld instrument

specifically designed for non-contact forensic

analysis of narcotics, pharmaceutical drugs,

cutting agents and precursors by law enforcement

personnel. The TacticID-N utilizes laboratory-

proven Raman spectroscopy, which allows users to

obtain actionable identification of illicit substances

without ever compromising the integrity of the

sample or the chain of evidence. The TacticID-N comes with a comprehensive library of

over 1,000 substances. Additionally, users have access to frequent library updates in order

to continuously maintain up-to-date identification capabilities and stay ahead of emerging

narcotics.

The TacticID–GP adds to the capabilities of the

TacticID-N system. The TacticID-GP contains the

entire TacticID-N narcotics library in addition to over

9,000 additional library items such as explosives*,

toxic industrial chemicals and much more. The

TacticID-GP also provides users with the ability

to create and add their own custom libraries. This

feature is highly valuable to state labs, customs departments and other users who want to

add region-specific threats to their libraries quickly and efficiently.

Both systems provide law enforcement, custom agents and first responders with simple, easy

to understand identification of narcotics.
