What did you learn? In the text, Léonie talked about her past

holidays. We haven’t learned yet how to communicate

about the past. However, we could understand some of it,

because the verbs are similar. Look at the text again. Work in groups and try

to find a rule how to build the past tense (passé composé).

Le passé composé

In French you use the perfect tense (le passé composé) to say what you have done at a certain time in the past.

Verbs with avoir

• The passé composé is usually formed by using the present tense of avoir and the past participle of the verb, just as in English.

J’ai trouvé un prince

And the past participle?

Regular –er verbs

• Take off the –er and replace it with –é

•jouer j’ai joué

What do theses sentences mean?

Marie a écouté un disque. Après, elle a parlé avec sa mère. Puis, elle a rangé sa chambre. A midi, elle a lavé la voiture. Elle a fini l’école à cinq heures. Elle a fait ses devoirs après le dîner.

Remember!

• Note: with verbs which use être as the auxiliary verb, the past participle agrees with the subject (the person or thing doing the action) just like adjectives.

Add -e if the subject is feminine

entrer elle est entrée

Add -s if the subject is masculine plural (or includes masculine and feminine)

arriver Ils sont arrivés

Add –es if the subject is feminine plural

partir elles sont parties

The following verbs form the passé composé with être. It is easier to learn them as pairs:

• aller/venir* to go/to come• arriver/partir to arrive/to leave• entrer/sortir to enter/to go out• monter/descendre to go up/to go • naître*/mourir* to be born/to die

*The past participle of these verbs are venu, né, mort. All the rest are regular!
