All our partnership sites on the Peninsula have been included in this plan which is fabulous for our sites. In all there are 139 sites across the state which is about 1/3 of all Primary and Secondary schools involved in this Capital Works program. There are two key elements to the project. One is that the building works are an economic stimulation package and the second is the desire of DECD to bring Science, Mathematics Technology and Engineering (STEM) facilities up to a standard that will allow for modern approaches to enquiry and problem based learning pedagogies to flourish in our schools. Why? The government is recognising the importance of these STEM skill sets to our future economic prosperity of South Australia and indeed Australia. We are also planning further works in building 7 (the most southerly Technology Studies building). All this is still to be finally determined in the scope of works. There will be 3 phases to this state wide project, some sites will get works this year, some next and some in 2018. ALL the projects need to be completed by December 2018. We await our allocated time slot! In our case it will not be possible to be this year due to the other capital works projects here. Welcome Assembly:

This was a very positive event for the school where student attendance and academic awards were presented, the staff service awards were

announced to the school community and Deklan Soeroes was presented with a certificate by Mr Malcolm McInerney from DECD for his success in winning the Spirit of ANZAC Competition. Malcolm visits many schools in his role and he told me that our assembly was the best one he has been to compared to other schools. High praise indeed for our school community!

STEM Works: this is our big news

for this report. We are a part of the State Government’s $250m STEM works plan. The ACER (Australian Council for

Educational Research) national conference in Brisbane this year focussed on STEM research. Regional Office leaders, some of our Primary partners and Eddie Grzeskowiak, Laurence Fletcher and I attended this excellent conference in week 3. We learnt much and gained many ideas to integrate into the planning of our STEM works project through this conference.

benefit from the new DECD initiative to have access to one of the 60 Social Work personnel appointed across SA. These personnel will service a number of sites. The base school will be determined at our next partnership meeting in Week 4 of term 3.

STEM Primary Visiting: This process is still going

very well. We had the Largs Bay year 6 students attend on Thursday 4th August and they had a very successful day working on atmospheric observations and building anemometers and wind vanes.

Aboriginal Education Camp was in week 9 last

term to the Flinders Ranges area. This was another very successful event for the students and staff.

Ice Factor Spectacular: The biannual fund raiser

is on in September for this program again at the Hilton Hotel Ball Room.

AMC trip: Week 9. This visit also was very

successful with students participating in a wide range of taster programs at the AMC Launceston Campus.

International activities: We have recently had a

Mongolian teacher (Ms Oyunsanaa Tserendash) visiting in August as a part of our ongoing relationship with School #45 in Ulaan Baator. She was very positive about her experience with us at Le Fevre High.

There will also be an incoming visit from Sekolah

Pilar Indonesia in November and we are currently receiving notifications regarding Full Fee paying students for 2017.

We have had our first meeting for the 2017 Laos

Cambodia trip. Good interest at this time.

The underground power supply for the new electronic information sign was installed on Friday 5 August. Next will be the fitting of the unit into the existing sign at the front of the school so we can get out multiple information in a more timely and eye catching manner.

Electronic communications: Course selection:

Thank you all for participating in our new web based course selection process this year. The Course Counselling day went well and I thank all who contributed to its success. Next we are progressing the move to an online newsletter later this year as well as on-line appointment booking system for future Parent-Teacher interviews and using our DAY MAP Portal for an electronic diary for students. We have been investigating a range of products and what other schools have introduced. We are still on track to have this in place by the next Parent Teacher interview Cycle at the start of Term 4.

Year 8 Numbers: we have an initial allocation of

132 students. This is up from an allocation of 106 last year so we are hopeful this will be a very strong intake for us in 2017. I sincerely thank our key transition team of Craig Bailey, Liam Narcys and Ty Duerden assisted by all other staff for this outcome. Regards Rob Shepherd Principal

Our key focus this year has been development of Literacy across the school. Our staff have been working in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) on Tuesday afternoons, focusing on evaluating student work and constructing teaching approaches that support student access to tasks at all literacy levels. Part of this work has involved the staff building their understanding of the demanding literacy requirements of the Australian Curriculum. This term’s student free day was planned around supporting the work of our PLCs. This entailed building in depth knowledge through reviewing NAPLAN requirements and learning about approaches staff can use with students to develop their literacy skills. We were supported in our endeavours by a second visit from Bronwyn Custance, an expert in all things Literacy. Staff worked as a whole group for the morning session and then for the remainder of the day, Bronwyn worked with the staff PLCs utilising this new knowledge to refine teaching approaches. Medical Condition Information

STUDENTS WITH A MEDICAL CONDITION REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING HEALTH CARE PLAN These are specific to the student’s medical condition ie Asthma, Epilepsy, Anaphylaxis etc. These plans are to be developed and completed by your GP or specialist. All health care plans should be monitored and reviewed every 12 months and earlier if the family has concerns or if there is any change in the support needs of the child. MEDICATION AUTHORITY Students must not administer their own medication, it should be given to Student Services in the original chemist packaging stating the child’s name and dosage information along with a Medication Authority form completed by your GP or specialist.

We kindly ask you keep the school up to date with current information ie phone numbers, emergency contacts and address. These requirements are to assist education workers, in partnership with the families and health professionals, so we can ensure we are able to respond effectively to your child in case of an emergency. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter, if you have any questions in relation to managing Medical Conditions or obtaining a copy of the mentioned forms, please contact the First Aid Officer on 84497004.

Emergency foster carers needed Foster care agencies are currently seeking emergency and short term foster carers.

What is emergency foster care? Sometimes children need urgent placement with a foster carer because there are concerns for the child’s immediate safety. These placements can occur any time, day or night, including after

hours and on weekends. ‘Emergency’ does not mean you start today. All foster carers receive thorough training and

assessment to ensure the children placed with you are safe and that you have the skills needed to provide quality care. For more information, visit the Families SA website.
