Cologne 2017: Cassina is presenting a new version of the Casiers Standard, selecting a series of specific compositions from the original system of modular storage units that, while offering flexible options in terms of height, size, type of base and colours, maintain a direct link to the better-known configurations.As far back as 1931, Cologne was the venue chosen for one of the presentations of these cutting-edge new cabinets to be used as elegant linear home storage units, the intention being to go much further than the stereotypical formalism of the modern Movement’s characteristic simplification. Charlotte Perriand’s words in her recollection of the stand for this show are proof of this. Reworked by Cassina for the first time in 1978 thanks to an adaptation by Charlotte Perriand and to mark reconstruction in Bologna of the Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau, the Casiers Standard are today presented as mass produced items. They feature new details that enhance the inherent and perceived quality of these simple yet refined cabinets based on the standard 75x75x37.5 module, making them perfect for any room in the house as storage solutions for all those everyday necessary objects.

Colonia 2017: Cassina presenta una nuova versione dei Casiers Standard, selezionando dal sistema originario di contenitori modulari una serie di specifiche composizioni che mantengono una relazione diretta con le figurazioni più conosciute pur offrendo una varietà di altezze, dimensioni, tipologie di basi e colori. Già nel 1931 Colonia fu occasione di una presentazione di questi nuovi arredi d’avanguardia che si offrirono come strumenti eleganti e lineari per l’organizzazione domestica, con una volontà di procedere ben oltre il formalismo stereotipato della semplificazione del Movimento moderno. Le parole di Charlotte Perriand nel racconto dell’allestimento di questa esposizione, ne sono testimonianza. Rieditati da Cassina per la prima volta nel 1978 grazie ad un adattamento di Charlotte Perriand e in occasione della ricostruzione a Bologna del Pavillion de l’Esprit Nouveau, i Casiers Standard sono oggi presentati perseguendo una logica di produzione in serie, con nuovi accorgimenti che accrescono la qualità intrinseca e percepita di questi semplici ma raffinati contenitori. Basati sul modulo standard di 75x75x37,5, i nuovi Casiers Standard risultano adatti ad ogni ambiente della casa per ordinare tutti gli oggetti necessari al nostro quotidiano.

Cologne 1931Presentation of the Casiers at the “Internationale Raumausstellung”.The city of Cologne had invited the atelier to participate in an important avant-garde exhibition of contemporary furnishings, in the spirit of Bauhaus. We had proposed a diorama of the “Plan Voisin de Paris”, some pieces of furniture and a very valuable rug composed by Le Corbusier, which I personally was to take and lay out just before the inauguration. I followed Le Corbusier’s instructions to the letter. On the morning, before the official visitors arrived, two of the exhibition organisers helped us to spread out the rug; when we realised what it depicted they were mortified. The news spread, embarrassment grew, the visitors were on their way. One of the people in charge tried to make excuses such as the vulnerability of the rug, the difficulty of protecting it and a thousand more, politely yet insistently trying to have it removed. However, I was adamant in my refusal: “Only Le Corbusier can make such a decision”. The visitors arrived and… moved quickly on. A real scandal looking back! A few days later, Le Corbusier received a letter from a well-known German collector. He wanted to buy it. “This rug is not for sale, it is part of the Maestro’s personal collection”. He and Pierre had thoroughly enjoyed this joke, it was their way of poking fun at German formalism.

Avevamo proposto un diorama del “Plan Voisin de Paris”, alcuni pezzi di arredo e un tappeto molto prezioso composto da Le Corbusier e che dovevo portare e stendere personalmente appena prima dell’inaugurazione. Eseguii alla lettera le raccomandazioni di Le Corbusier. La mattina, prima del passaggio degli ufficiali, due degli organizzatori della mostra ci aiutarono a disporre il tappeto; quando scoprirono il soggetto rimasero costernati. La notizia si diffuse, l’imbarazzo crebbe, il corteo avanzava. Uno dei responsabili fece appello alla vulnerabilità dell’oggetto, alla difficoltà di proteggerlo, e infine mille scuse cortesi seppur insistenti per farlo rimuovere. Mi rifiutai categoricamente, “soltanto Le Corbusier può prendere questa decisione”. Il corteo arrivò e... passò rapidamente. Un vero scandalo! Alcuni giorni dopo, Le Corbusier ricevette una lettera da parte di un noto collezionista tedesco. Voleva comprarlo. “Questo tappeto non è in vendita, fa parte della collezione personale del “Maestro””. Lui e Pierre si erano divertiti molto con questo simpatico scherzo, era stato come strizzare l’occhio al formalismo tedesco.»

È con il progetto dell’alloggio del Pavillion de l’Esprit Nouveau realizzato con Pierre Jeanneret a Parigi nel 1925 che Le Corbusier getta le basi di una nuova concezione di arredamento. L’allestimento degli interni si riduce a due categorie: i mobili veri e propri liberi nello spazio e i Casiers Standard, nuovi contenitori modulari e componibili, capaci di organizzare architettonicamente l’ambiente. Al mobilier tradizionale si sostituisce l’équipement, l’attrezzatura per rispondere ai bisogni dell’organizzazione domestica. La necessità di una unificazione dei diversi contenitori esistenti nelle case nasceva dalla constatazione del caos visivo che essi generavano: con i casiers la questione del “contenimento” poteva essere risolta con un elemento standardizzato diversamente combinabile. Ispirati ai mobili per ufficio Ronéo e ai bauli per viaggiatori Innovation, i Casiers Standard erano contenitori adatti a riporre ogni tipo di oggetto a seconda dell’ambiente in cui venivano collocati. Questa versatilità si coglie con maggior evidenza nella seconda esposizione dedicata allo spazio interno e ai suoi arredi, il Salon d’Automne del 1929. In questa esposizione, che vede presentatoil nucleo fondamentale degli arredi di Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret e Charlotte Perriand, i Casiers Standard formavano vere e proprie pareti attrezzate per servire i diversi ambienti della casa. Sorretti da esili pilotis o poggiati a terra, erano realizzati in metallo e dotati di un’articolata attrezzatura interna. Una terza occasione di sviluppo di questo modello si ha nel 1935 per l’allestimento modello dell’Apartement d’un jeune homme all’Esposizione di Bruxelles del 1935. La novità di questa versione era il sostegno “à corolle” dei contenitori, già sperimentato nel tavolo progettato per l’appartamento dello stesso Le Corbusier l’anno precedente.

Le Corbusier paved the way for a new concept of furnishing with his project for the home in the Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau, in partnership with Pierre Jeanneret in Paris in 1925. Interior furnishings were reduced to two categories: true pieces of furniture in a free arrangement and the Casiers Standard, new modular cabinets for the architectural organisation of rooms. The tradition mobilier was replaced with the équipement, a solution designed to meet the needs of domestic organisation. The necessity for unification of the various containers already in the home came from the realisation of the visual chaos they generated: the casiers solved the question of “storage” with a standardised element that could be put together in different ways.Inspired by Ronéo office furniture and Innovation travelling trunks, the casiers were containers suitable for the storage of any kind of object depending on the room in which they were placed. This versatility was best seen at the Salon d’Automne in 1929, the second exhibition dedicated to interiors and relative furnishings. In this exhibition, which saw presentation

of the core nucleus of furnishings by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the casiers formed real walls equipped to serve the different rooms in the home. Standing on slender supports (stilts) or resting on the floor, they were made of metal and fitted with an articulated assortment of internal accessories. A third opportunity for development of this model came in 1935, for the layout of the model of Apartement d’un jeune homme at the Brussels International Exposition in 1935. The new addition this time was the “à corolle” pedestal base on the storage units, already used in the table designed the previous year for Le Corbusier’s own apartment.

Gli storici contenitori, in collezione dal 1978, vengono rilanciati in veste rinnovata, tesa ad esaltare le caratteristiche che rendono questi mobili dal design unico e senza tempo, versatili, funzionali e estremamente adatti all’organizzazione dello spazio.I contenitori sono proposti in 18 composizioni fisse, tutte di profondità 37,5 cm, disponibili in versione da due moduli (largh. 150 cm) oppure da tre moduli (largh. 225 cm), in tre differenti tipologie: con vani a giorno, con due ante battenti, con anta a ribalta inferiore.La gamma delle composizioni prevede, secondo uno schema preordinato, l’accostamento di differenti tipologie di moduli, studiati per offrire funzionalità ai fini di archivio e contenimento ed estetica: l’ampia gamma di coloriture - contemplate per le basi, le parti esterne e interne dei moduli e le ante – consente interessanti ed eleganti avvicendamenti. These historic storage units, in the collection since 1978, are relaunched with a new look that aims to highlight the characteristics that make this furniture, with its unique and timeless design, so versatile, functional and perfect for organising space. The units come in 18 fixed compositions, all 37.5 cm (14.8") deep, available in versions with two modules (width 150 cm. - 59.1") or three modules (width 225 cm. - 88.6"), in three different types: with open compartments, with two hinged doors, with downward flap door.The range of compositions allows for the different kinds of modules to be used together according to specific patterns, designed to offer good-looking filing and storage space, while the wide array of colours - for the bases, external and internal parts of the modules and the doors - makes for interesting, elegant solutions. The modules contain adjustable shelves with 5 different possible positions (two shelves for modules with open compartments and hinged doors; one shelf for modules with flap doors).Two kinds of legs: four chrome-plated supports legs or two painted corolla-shaped pedestal bases.

Le varianti di finiture sono le seguenti:

— (A) telaio metallico verniciato grigio con quattro pilotis cromati o con due basi a corolla verniciate in grigio; esterno mobile in rovere tinto fango, interno a giorno in rovere tinto grigio; ante verniciate finitura color ardesia;

— (B) telaio metallico verniciato fango con quattro pilotis cromati o con due basi a corolla verniciate fango; esterno mobile in rovere naturale; interno a giorno in rovere tinto color fango; ante verniciate finitura color ardesia;

— (C) telaio metallico verniciato grigio con quattro pilotis cromati; esterno mobile in rovere tinto ocra; interno a giorno in rovere tinto grigio (per le composizioni a due moduli) oppure uno grigio e uno completamente ocra nelle composizioni a tre moduli; ante in mogano naturale.

The following finishes are available:

— (A) grey lacquered metal frame with four chrome-plated legs or with two grey lacquered pedestal bases; outside in mud-stained oak, inside of open compartments in grey-stained oak; doors painted in slate-colour finish;

— (B) mud lacquered metal frame with four chrome-plated legs or with two mud lacquered pedestal bases; outside in natural oak, inside of open compartments in mud-stained oak; doors painted with slate-colour finish;

— (C) grey lacquered metal frame with four chrome-plated legs; outside of unit in ochre-stained oak; inside of open compartments in grey-stained oak (for two-module compositions) or one grey and one completely ochre for the three-module compositions; doors painted in natural mahogany.
