Le comparatif

• Comparisons in English are formed by adding –er to the end of the adjective or the adverb:– He is taller than Julie. He runs quicker than Julie.

• Comparisons in French are formed by putting plus (more), moins (less), or aussi (as) before the adjective or adverb, and que afterward:– Il est plus grand que Julie. Il court plus vite que Julie.

L’accord (agreement)

ADJECTIFS• You must add agreement to

the adjective to match the subject of the sentence:

• EX: Guy est moins sportif que son père.

• EX: Sonia est aussi sportive que son père.

• EX: Les garçons sont moins gentils que les filles.

ADVERBES• Adverbs have no gender,

just put:

• Plus __(adverbe)__ que

• Moins __(adverbe)__ que

• Aussi __(adverbe)__ que

Le superlatif

• To form the superlative in English, use the definite article (the) and add –est.– He is the tallest (in the class). He walks the fastest.

• To form the superlative in French, use the definite article (le, la, ou les) and put plus or moins before the adjective or adverb.– Il est le plus grand (de la classe). Il marche le plus vite

• Always use « de » to say « in » or « of ».
