Course Description

This course provides a foundation of understanding of leadership and its role in managing people and systems. This course will cover key leadership elements such as effective leadership behavior, power and influence, the differences between leadership and management, leading change, intrapreneurship, and how an innovative mindset impacts people and systems in a continually changing global and virtual environment.

How are they different? What obstacles has this person encountered as a leader? Is this person an effective leader based on common measures for success? Provide a rationale for your answers.

Each team member will be expected to participate in formulating your response to the question on the importance of academic sources and trade journals and to also respond to the discussion in the main classroom. You need to be active in both the team forum and the classroom to earn points for the assignment.

APA Citations and References Team Assignment

Begin this assignment by individually reviewing the Sample Paper and the Examples of Citations and References in CWE. Create a document in which you show examples citations and references for at least one each of the following:

Use the research facility of the UOP Library to locate your examples for periodicals and journals and books.

Post your document to the thread provided in the Main Classroom and respond to the posts from the other teams.

Note: When you open the research documents that you find in your search, you can use the Cite tool to create a reference. You need to make sure the reference created agrees with the example referencing for that type of document.

Note: This is an independent team assignment. Each of the team assignment will be graded separately. Your uncle owns a midsized manufacturing business for which you worked between high school graduation and college. You were involved in many nonmanagerial operations, from distribution to manufacturing experience. As a new graduate, you seek employment.

Your uncle has offered you a position as the new product development project leader. If you accept this position, you must address the following concerns:

Revenue on the business’ standard products has dropped significantly in the past 3 years. There are no new ideas on the horizon. No one is leading project managers. The last project leader left the business because of conflicts with peer managers and immediate supervisors.

What are some differences between leadership and management? How do these differences affect an organization? What are some decisions leaders must make? What are some decisions managers must make?

Why is it important to have effective leaders and managers? When is it appropriate to lead or manage? Under what circumstances should a leader or manager take a follower role? What is the effect of each role at a departmental level?

What is effective leadership? What obstacles may hinder effective leadership? What tools effectively reduce leadership obstacles in an organization? When and how should these tools be used?

How would you define successful leadership? What standard do you apply when evaluating leadership success? Is it possible to predict success based on organizational cultures or other factors? Provide examples to support your answer.

What are common measures of successful leadership? Identify two successful leaders you know personally or have heard about. By what measures are these leaders successful?

Week Two Discussion Questions

When might a leader’s values and priorities conflict with those of his or her organization? What tools are available to help leaders balance competing values and priorities? What support must an organization provide to help leaders in the struggle of competing values and priorities? Provide specific examples.

Review the section on generational differences in Ch. 4 of The Art and Science of Leadership. What are some generational differences in your workplace? What effect do they have on a leader’s ability to balance values and priorities? Provide examples.

How does an individual’s personality affect his or her leadership traits? What traits serve a leader well? What traits do not? Explain your answer.

Week Three Discussion Questions

How would you define power? How would you define influence? What are some distinctions between power and influence in an organizational setting? How may power and influence positively affect an organization? How may power and influence negatively affect an organization? Provide specific examples to support your answer.

Identify a public or political leader. What kind of power does this leader possess? What influence tactics does this leader normally use based on his or her power? Provide a specific example of an influence tactic this person has not used. What would happen if the leader used this tactic? How would his or her power be affected?

What are different types of strategic leadership? How do they affect an organization’s structure? What are the roles of strategic leaders in an organization’s management? What internal and external factors affect strategic leadership ability?

What are some examples of nonprofit organizations? What unique challenges exist for their leaders? What characteristics and tools might a nonprofit organization’s leader utilize to overcome these challenges?

In The Art and Science of Leadership, Nahavandi writes about the dark side of power. Provide an example. What organizational factors contributed to the leader’s behavior? What were consequences of the behavior?

Week Four Discussion Questions

What are the most important skills a leader may possess? How may these skills be used in an organizational setting? What methods may you use to improve your skill set to become a more effective leader?

How would you define effective relationships in a professional setting? How do effective relationships contribute to an organization’s success? What methods may an organization use to promote effective relationships between and in departments?

How do effective leaders build relationships with superiors and peers? What specific approaches must a leader employ when interacting with superiors and peers?

What constitutes participatory management? Under what conditions would you propose participatory management? What are its advantages and disadvantages? What role must a leader assume in this managerial environment?

What obstacles exist for leaders involved in participatory management? What methods may a leader employ to overcome these obstacles?

Provide an example of change that may take place in an organization. How may that change be perceived, based on a person’s position?
