When?

• 15 May xx: Special Request Chit to CO • 15 Jun xx: Application package to Admin • 01 Jul xx: Interviewer’s Appraisal Board • 01 Aug xx: CO’s endorsement prepared • 01 Sep xx: Completed package with CO’s draft

Page 12: LDO CWO Application Brief FY16

How? • Do NOT deviate from OPNAVINST 1420.1B, unless otherwise directed by NAVADMIN • Review NAVADMIN 336/07, 281/12, and 141/14 • Reservists must also review OPNAVINST 1120.12 • Use the sample format • Recommend you have your application reviewed by an LDO/CWO in the

Designator you are applying for – better still, find a mentor! • You are responsible for your portion of the application, but not your CO’s

endorsement • Applications must be postmarked not later than the date specified in the

annual LDO/CWO program announcement NAVADMIN. (Typically, 01 October)

• Additional information must be postmarked not later than the date specified in the annual LDO/CWO program announcement NAVADMIN. (Typically, 01 December)

Page 13: LDO CWO Application Brief FY16

How? • Interview Appraisal Boards - endorsement by the

community • Set up by your CO or Appointed Command Coordinator

with LDOs/CWOs in the designator you are applying for • Minimum of 3 required (can have up to 5) • Appraisal sheets belong to the CO not the applicant • CO’s Endorsement - acknowledges your performance and is

unconstrained so provide a well written draft to your CO • CO can highlight your victories and precept language • CO can explain and address past negatives, if needed • Personal Statements - your opportunity to speak directly to

the board • Explain why this program personally appeals to you • Should be genuine and heartfelt • Do NOT provide the definition of an LDO/CWO

Page 14: LDO CWO Application Brief FY16

How?

• Use your own words • Remember, the majority of the board members

are LDOs and CWOs - they know what you should have done in terms of training, assignments, qualifications, and performance for the designator you are applying for

• The board meets for 2-3 weeks in January and the results are usually released in early March

• If selected, be prepared to travel to your drill assignment

• New RC LDOs and CWOs attend the Direct Commission Officer (DCO) course at Newport, RI
