I would like to congratulate you all on the great events that each LDAG has put on this year - you are all truly inspiring!
Also it would be great if every branch could please do a Branch Activity Summary for all of these great events from July 2015 until December 2015, and also an updated Member Contact List so we know who all of our wonderful volunteers are! You can either email them or send
them in the post to us. Thanks everyone!

Message from Executive Officer
Well the end of the year is fast approaching and I would be safe in saying that everyone at the LDAG Inc. office is looking forward to time off.
On reflection, the success of 2015 can only be attributed to the hundreds of volunteers who believe that by working together we can make a difference. LDAGs across the state continued to flourish and contribute to reducing the harms of alcohol and other drugs in local communities.
We welcomed new communities and new members and we had to say goodbye to others. The ebb and flow of LDAGs is what keeps me loving the work that we do. Being invited into a community and getting to work alongside motivated, generous and inspiring people is a privilege. THANK YOU.
There are lots of exciting projects coming up and planning for 2016 is well underway!
We are hosting a SW forum in early February and we are excited to spend a day networking and brain storming with all our members from the South West branches.
We are hosting a state conference on 22 -23 April. The conference dinner being held on Saturday 23rd April will celebrate 20 years of outstanding community action and will include the LDAG Awards. These awards acknowledge the outstanding work by our branches and individual members.
The LDAG Inc. office is moving to a new office in Workzone which is located at 1 Nash Street, Perth. We will be collocated with the Mental Health Commission, Office of the Chief Psychiatrist, Western Australian Association of Mental Health (WAAMH) and Western Australian Network of Alcohol and other Drug Agencies (WANADA). The move scheduled for late March is keeping us busy as we archive 20 years of LDAG history.
The AGM was held on Tuesday 13th October. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Susan Gatti, Lorraine Dunkling, Richard Wells and Sally Eves who have all stood down from the Board of Management. Your commitment and support was sincerely appreciated. I would like to welcome and thank the incoming Board of Management who convened in Perth on 20-21 November for two very intensive days of planning. Your participation, energy and action are inspiring and I am looking forward to the next chapter of LDAG Inc.
As we move towards our 20th birthday I see before us an organisation that has grown to be respected and valued, an organisation that continues to make a difference in the state of WA.
I would like to wish you all a very happy holiday season and I look forward to welcoming you to Perth in April to help celebrate 20 years of outstanding community action.
THANK YOU
December 5th was declared as International Volunteer Day (IVD) by the United Nations General Assembly in
1985. The first IVD was celebrated in 1986 by dozens of countries world-wide. Activities ranged from clean-up campaigns and round table conferences to competitions and exhibitions. In Australia, IVD has been designated as a day for the recognition of volunteer involvement, a day in which organisations can thank their volunteer staff.
New Secondary Supply Laws in WA
Secondary supply laws came into effect in WA from 20 November 2015.
The new laws mean that it will be against the law to provide under 18s with
alcohol in private settings without parental consent.
This is a very welcome move. Racing and Gaming Minister Hon Colin Holt
MLC said the laws empower parents who do not want their children
exposed to alcohol. They were introduced just in time for Leavers this
week, where around half the cohort will be 18 years old and will be able to
legally purchase alcohol.
A new campaign by the Mental Health Commission (previously the Drug and Alcohol Office) and the
Department for Racing, Gaming and Liquor aims to raise awareness of the new laws and increase
community understanding of the importance of preventing the supply of alcohol to young people.
The campaign’s key message is that “giving alcohol to under 18s in private setting without parental
consent will be against the law.”

Tom Price Local Drug Action Group
Twilight L8te Sk8te
“Twilight L8te Sk8te was a showcase event at the Tom Price Skate Park designed to capitalise on the popularity of skateboard, BMX and scooter based activities.
The Tom Price LDAG with the support of the Tom Price Youth Support Association transformed the local skate park into a vibrant area where youth culture was celebrated by participants and spectators alike. Our event included healthy competition for BMX, Skateboards, and Scooter riders, in an environment which included lighting, DJ music, a graffiti board, BBQ, drinks prizes and giveaways.
We always thought that the event was going to be a great success, but this was enhanced through other organisations wanting to support what we were trying to achieve. This has not always been the case in Tom Price, but the involvement of major stakeholders such as the Shire of Ashburton added invaluable support to the project which resulted in the participation of the Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative, who ran workshops and demonstrations throughout the event, paid for by the SOA.
For the duration of the event we provided a continuous sausage sizzle and free drinks and held a variety of trick competitions. We also invited participants to write an anti-drinking message through a graffiti board activity which was highly successful and well utilised. We provided giveaways and show bags which contained a variety of resources on alcohol and drugs, and also promoted TPLDAG.
The high level of active youth involvement throughout the event was very evident and resulted in positive community perception and very good standing for the TPLDAG. This in turn has increased the confidence and self-esteem levels of our youth LDAG members. Other young people and parents also stepped up on the night to lend a hand which was another positive outcome for all.
The event provided our youth based LDAG with an opportunity to experience community action through the organisation of an event specifically aimed at their peers. Success breeds success and youth confidence and self-esteem levels were certainly raised through the staging of a successful event that was well attended and which created a buzz amongst local youth. Twilight L8te Sk8te was extremely successful and we have received very positive feedback and requests to run more events of this nature. Youth participated positively
and demonstrated some amazing skills on skateboard, scooter and BMX. Young people had fun and the whole atmosphere of the event was vibrant and alcohol and drug free. We were able to spread the Harm Minimisation message to parents and children during a meaningful community event.

Twilight L8te Sk8te continued...
We also recognise the successful creation of mutually beneficial partnerships between the TPYSA/TPLDAG, the Shire of Ashburton, Rio Tinto and the Australian Skateboarding Community Initiative which will make it easier to stage another event of this nature in the future. In addition we received support from organisations and businesses that have not sponsored us in the past and they have promised continued support in the future.”

LDAG Branch: Kalgoorlie-Boulder Occupation: Senior Health Promotion Officer Hobbies & Interests: Recently crocheting, gardening, watching documentaries, and cooking What inspired you to join LDAG? I must say it was because of my work initially, but I now feel it is a great platform to contribute my learning/knowledge even if it is in a volunteer capacity.
Describe your favourite thing about your Local Community: Being 5 minutes’ drive to/from work is my favourite as I hate getting up early in the morning. Also the local flora especially the wild flowers that are in full bloom this time of the year. Being a close knit community helps you in developing close social and professional networks. Kalgoorlie offers a relaxed work-life balance that you can find nowhere.
How has LDAG Inc. contributed to your community? Kalgoorlie-Boulder Local Drug Action Group regularly participates at the ‘Youth Fest’, Raceround, FASD Day activities and contributes through other advocacy activities.
Take Action on Alcohol Advertising!
“If you see an alcohol ad that concerns you, you can do something about it! The Alcohol Advertising Review Board (AARB) accepts complaints about alcohol ads from the Australian community. It’s a very simple process - we accept complaints by email ([email protected]), an online form (http://www.alcoholadreview.com.au/make-a-complaint/), phone or the post. All we need is a picture or link to the ad and a few sentences on why it concerns you. To keep up to-do-date on AARB determination, reports, and interesting research, follow @AlcoholAdReview on Twitter.”

Australian Indigenous Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre
providing resources and support to Aboriginal AOD workers and communities
The Australian Indigenous Alcohol and Other Drugs Knowledge Centre (the Knowledge Centre) is a free web resource which provides comprehensive and culturally appropriate information and resources on alcohol (including FASD), illicit drugs, prescription drugs, volatile substances and tobacco use. It includes information and resources for anyone working to reduce harms from substance use in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Resources specifically for community members who are working to reduce the harms of alcohol and other drug use in their community can be found on the Community portal. In this section, you will find information on help for offenders, help for families or young people and social and emotional wellbeing. There is also a section on what communities can do to respond to substance use issues and a collection of health promotion videos that are relevant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Community portal has recently released a series of AOD (Alcohol and other drugs) factsheets, providing information in plain language on topics such as ice (methamphetamine), alcohol, gunja (cannabis) and prescription drugs. The Knowledge Centre also has a portal specifically developed for AOD workers, which provides information on tips for workers, practical tools for assessment, health promotion resources, publications and programs. The portal has 16 different topic areas ranging from drug specific information to sections on harm reduction. The topic area Taking care of yourself , outlines strategies to protect worker wellbeing and is just as relevant for volunteers as it is for paid workers.
In order to make services more accessible, the Knowledge Centre has also developed an app for iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices, with an Android version currently under development. AODconnect has been developed for anyone working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, but it can be a useful tool for any health professional in the sector. The app allows you to find a service by state, territory and/or region through an interactive map of Australia or by alphabetical listing, which has the option to filter by treatment categories, such as harm reduction and support groups.
The Knowledge Centre team is always interested to hear about initiatives and program being undertaken in the community. If you have something you think belongs on the site, or any queries about the web resource, please contact Avinna at [email protected].
