LCCC Receives Funds to Support Nursing Simulators

Students in LCCC’s nursing programs will have access to state-of-the-art patient simulators as part of a grant from the Morgan Foundation and money through the college’s federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education grant. Students in both the Associate Degree in Nursing and Licensed Practical Nursing programs will have access to the high-fidelity clinical simulators. Life-like simulators, depicting an adult male client and a pediatric client, will enrich the experiences that students in the nursing program have and will better prepare them for working with live patients. The simulators, including installation and training, are valued at $188,000. They will be installed, ready to be used in January 2017. The simulators will help students develop their clinical reasoning skills in a safe environment. These full-scale, computerized patient simulators provide a high level of interactivity and realism. The high-fidelity simulators will be incorporated into experiential learning, in support of clinical learning objectives and align with accreditation requirements. Simulators will be located at LCCC Tamaqua at the Morgan Center site and on the LCCC main campus in Schnecksville. They represent the faculty and administration commitment to providing the best possible learning experience for students. This project supplements the clinical education students receive in both acute and non-acute settings. When using the simulators, nursing faculty will facilitate case studies and patient care scenarios and will be able to program clinical issues similar to a live patient who presents with an emerging health care issue. The simulators can also be programmed and manipulated to demonstrate rare and critical events that can be reproduced as many times as necessary. For more information on LCCC nursing degree programs, go to https://www.lccc.edu/academics/health-care-sciences.

Rising STARS Tuition Assistance Program

LCCC received Rising STARS funding provided by the Northeast Regional Key, which is available for students taking courses in the Early Childhood Education program. The Rising STARS Tuition Assistance Program pays 95% of tuition costs for eligible college coursework taken by early learning professionals with a maximum benefit of $6,000 per fiscal year (July 1, 2016, through June 30, 2017). Applicants will be able to enter multiple courses for a semester into one application for the Rising STARS Tuition Assistance Program and will no longer be required to submit a PA Certificate of Compliance or STARS Certificate. Any staff person who is employed at a Keystone STARS designated early learning program, and has been working at an early learning program operated by that legal entity for at least 12 months, is eligible to apply for Rising STARS Tuition Assistance. Additional requirements, including Pennsylvania residency, can be found on the PA Keys portal at www.pakeys.org.

LCCC will sign a partnership agreement with ExpressJet Airlines on Monday, August 8, to offer aviation students at the college a potential career progression with the airline. The ceremony will be held in Room 113B of the Student Services Center on the college’s Schnecksville campus. ExpressJet Airlines, which is affiliated with American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, has partnerships in place with most of the major aviation training programs in the U.S. Through this pilot pathway agreement, a student who completes the professional pilot program at LCCC, with flight training accomplished in-house, will receive a guaranteed early interview at ExpressJet. The program is designed to provide opportunities for future employment for graduates of the LCCC program and to build a hiring pool of pilots for the airline. Upon successful completion of the interview, the student will be offered a conditional offer of employment with ExpressJet. They would then continue to flight instruct as a Certified Flight Instructor for LCCC until they meet the required hours to be hired at ExpressJet. In addition, students are assigned a mentor who is a current ExpressJet pilot that can help answer questions, offer advice and be a resource for the student. ExpressJet is the only regional airline that offers career pathways to United Airlines and JetBlue Airways. For more information on LCCC’s aviation program, located at the Lehigh Valley International Airport, contact Aram Basmadjian, chief flight instructor, at [email protected].

LCCC to Sign Agreement

with ExpressJet

Cindy Haney, vice president for enrollment services, and Larissa Verta, interim dean of the School of Healthcare Sciences, represented LCCC at the inaugural meeting of Second Chance Pell Pilot Program in Washington, D.C., with U.S. Department of Education Secretary John B. King and Deputy Attorney General Sally Q. Yates, on July 18 and 19. The Pell program allows incarcerated students to receive federal Pell Grant funding for post-secondary education. In June, the U.S. Department of Education announced the 69 colleges and universities that were selected to provide post-secondary education to nearly 12,000 students in more than 100 states and federal prisons nationwide. LCCC was selected to participate in the program out of more than 200 applicants in 48 states. The meeting was hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Vera Institute of Justice.

LCCC Staff Attend Pell Meeting

LCCC graduates interested in the Technical Leadership bachelor’s degree offered through Bloomsburg University will have an opportunity to attend an advising session on August 10, from 3 to 7 p.m., in Science Hall Room 145, at the college’s main campus in Schnecksville. Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania offers the Bachelor of Applied Science in Technical Leadership (BASTL) on the LCCC campus through a partnership between the two institutions. The degree program focuses on career advancement, and is designed for working professionals and is affordable. The BASTL program builds on the student’s knowledge developed in LCCC’s associate degree program by providing leadership and supervisory skills that employers seek when hiring and promoting. Since it is based at LCCC, students will also be able to receive a degree from BU without having to travel to Bloomsburg. Students can:• Transfer a minimum of 60 credits from their LCCC associate degree program.• Complete the program on a full-time or part-time basis. All classroom courses are scheduled in the evenings – making this an excellent choice for working professionals.• Take advantage of the low Bloomsburg University tuition for courses, one of the least expensive bachelor’s degree programs available in Pennsylvania.• Take courses that combine online and in-class courses. There is still time to register for BU courses held at LCCC. The fall semester begins August 20. For more information, contact BAS director Dr. Carol Adukaitis at [email protected] or visit LCCC’s website at www.lccc.edu.
