Leadership by Design: Building Student Leaders One Step At A Time!
Leadership by Design (LbD) With a grant from Target, Inc., LbD is a new and
innovative program that established the first summer day camp run by college students for high school students living in the East Bay communities of California
The LbD program was designed to: 1) Provide leadership opportunities for college students
enrolled in a special event planning class and to take what they learned in the classroom out into the “field,” and
2) Expose at-risk youth to higher education environments and to gain leadership skills
THE SPECIAL EVENT PLANNING CLASS – 21 students Using the “P” word: PedagogyPedagogy (Greek: ‘child-leading’): the art or science
of being a teacher. The term generally refers to strategies of instruction, or a style of instruction
Andragogy (Greek: ‘man-leading’): the process of engaging adult learners in the structure of the learning experience
Essential difference:self-directed vs. ‘taught’ education
Knowles’ Andragogy
1. Adults need to be involved in the planning and evaluation of their instruction
2. Experience (including mistakes) provides the basis for learning activities
3. Adults are most interested in learning subjects that have immediate relevance to their job or personal life
4. Adult learning is problem-centered rather than content-oriented
LEARNING BY DOING
THE LbD DAY CAMP PROGRAM SPONSERS: Target, Inc., The Rec Room and Red
Carpet Clubs, Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism Department, Associated Students, Inc., The City of Hayward, Neumanali’s Restaurant, & CSUEB Pioneer Bookstore
Day one was held on the CSUEB campus and included tours, a leadership/teambuilding skills workshop, an Adventure Challenge course, and an on-to-college orientation
Day two began with leadership workshops in Hayward City Hall with an etiquette workshop and lunch at Neumanali’s Restaurant across the street
THE CAMPERS – 26 total Inner-City Youth from Richmond, CA
(16-20 years of age), multi-cultural mix, primarily SEA and AA, determined as “at-risk” and were showing some interest/aptitude for leadership, and
Local high school students from Hayward, CA (16-18 years of age)

FEEDBACK FROM THE COLLEGE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN REC 4501 I really enjoyed how the campers demonstrated leadership and
teamwork through the adventure course I thought the leadership camp was good for the kids – it gave them
an opportunity to hang out with each other in a different setting while learning to trust and become closer to one another; I thought this was a positive experience not just for the kids but for me also
I thought it was a great event even thought it was a bit chaotic when I first arrived at the location since not all the scheduled volunteers showed up, the camp ended up working very well
I, myself, also learned from this event since I was at the event from the very beginning. I learned the importance of being able to coordinate with other people and that when you are depending on others you can come across obstacles
RESULTS FROM THE CAMPERS Participants responded that they strongly liked
their overall camp experience (4.24), the team building/adventure course (4.2), and Sean Brooks, guest speaker from the City of Hayward (4.2). They felt that the time spent was very useful and helped them develop better leadership skills
They did not feel as strong about the team scenarios (3.84) and etiquette training (3.8), and felt the least about the on-to-college workshop (3.72). Other responses included camp needs to be longer with an overnight stay in student housing
