Bangalore: In the recent BBMP election for corporators, many people in posh localities failed to vote. For example, only 33% of the population voted from AECS Layout. It is the same case in Whitefield and Marathalli. More than the residents, it is also the mistake of BBMP candidates for not wooing the voters in an efficient manner. The candidates approached the local welfare associations to canvas for the party. Ultimately, many people did not go to vote on the election day. These attitudes only widen the communication gap between people and corporators. Bangalore is becoming too much cosmopolitan but does it mean that the communication gap can keep widening?

The rich people always try to get the work done by tipping of. A party worker asks, “The people in posh apartments are not living in the moon, they should remember. They need to understand that

Too Much Cosmopolitan?:The Posh and their Sheepish Attitude The skin is the largest organ of the

human body. It is also the organ most exposed to the environment. It is has certain vital functions such as covering and protecting the deeper structures, synthesis of vitamin D, temperature regulation, cosmesis, to mention a few. The word cosmesis indicates the skin's contribution to making person's appearance appealing. The skin is designed to take care of itself to a large extent by virtue of its integrity, the local immune system, the presence of antibacterial agents in the sebum, etc. It is only when the integrity is challenged that diseases of the skin occur. There are a number of factors that can break the integrity such as infectious agents, pollutants, and physical trauma.

Let us now see how to protect skin integrity, which we saw is the basic foundation of healthy skin. Firstly, it is important to keep the skin healthy and clean by daily cleansing of all parts of the skin. Though difficult to sustain over a long period, this care is best done with a syndet (synthetic detergent soap) that has a mildly acidic ph, similar to the ph of the skin. As an alternative, cleansers or soaps which have higher content of moisturizers can be used. Normal cleansing helps remove the excess oil, dust of various sources that are potent ial al lergens and also infectious agents. Specific skin c l e a n s i n g a g e n t s s u c h a s antibacterial agents, emollients, hypoallergenic cleansers are indicated only over problematic areas of the skin. Addition of fragrances to cleansers increases the risk for allergies in susceptible people.

Facial skin care is of great importance by virtue of the role it plays in a person's life and represents the acme of cosmesis. People generally take very good care of it, to the extent of sometimes getting over indulgent. Common problem such as acne, oi l iness, dryness, sun sensitivity can all be taken care of by carefully choosing personal care products such as cleansers, toners, moisturisers, and sunscreens. Broadly skin may be classified as dry, oily and combination types. A “universal cleanser” is one that suits all skin types. There are also cleansers with additional agents such as peeling agents, antibacterial agents and also hypoallergenic cleansers that go a long way in preventing common problems.

Graphotherapy is the science of improving your personality by manual changes in your handwriting. Professionally applied, Grapho-Therapy can correct your worst faults and strengthen your character by simply changing how you wri te!But how can hand writing affect our character?

The act of writing is movement - a series of gestured involving rhythm, speed, pressure, direction, etc. handwriting itself captures and holds on paper the slightest motor impulse of the writer with the many contributing factors which enter into it. We do not write with the hand alone, but with brain, muscles and nerves which in turn react to conscious, subconscious and

emotional stimuli. Thus it follows reason that how we

move (and write) must reflect our physical, mental and emotional states. Grapho-Therapy is particularly effective with children, because their handwriting (like their character) is in a formative stage. But it is never too late, and even stubborn cases in adults will respond positively. Our handwriting can reinforce our bad habits, or we can choose to use it to modify or even eliminate them.So from today onwards, decide to take special care in writing. Practice writing for 10 minutes in the morning to develop high positive energy throughout the day.

they are just away from poor localities, garbage dumps, and improper drainage systems. They're not bothered if there is a corporator or not.”

The rich and the educated give their opinion that BBMP election is all about money, reserve candidates and party people. So there is a big c h a l l e n g e i n b r i d g i n g t h i s commun ica t ion gap to make relationships better. The initiative to bridge the gap is very important here. The corporators have to arrange for meetings in different areas of their wards. The corporators will have to come out of the same old known circle – party people, welfare association, etc. – and try to develop relationship with others too. This will give a good opinion about the corporators that they are easily accessible. ‘

You'll find plenty of free activities and information on all kinds of things that are meant to get creative stuff flowing. She says creative writing involves 80% skill and this skill is obtained through practices in various sessions. She was trying to bring the concentration in children,

a key to nurture creativity in them. The 10 days session turned out to be wonderful with children gaining interest. The children are from privileged background and so the course has been designed accordingly. Nirmala Ravindran says the course has to be re-designed if it has to reach government schools.

MIND WORKS-33Prejudice and Discrimination: What they are, How they differ?By UK Athikkal

-----------At some time or other, in our lives, virtually every one of us, comes face to face with prejudice. Even when prejudices manifest in subtle or mild forms, its effect can be very much damaging both to the victims of prejudice and also to the persons who hold it. It is therefore worthwhile to understand the concept of prejudice and discrimination, analyze its origin, and examine the ways of combating this social menace.

The term 'prejudice' is a special type of attitude. It is a negative one and generally shown towards the members of a social group. On the other hand, the term 'discrimination' refers to negative actions or behavior displayed against those persons who are the victims of such prejudice. The important distinction can be understood in this way –“prejudice” being an attitude, refers to a (internal or concealed) behavior whereas “discrimination” is overt (external or expressed) behavior that is prejudice- in-action.

Prejudice is a negative attitude towards the members of some group, based solely on their membership in that group. In other words, a person who is prejudiced towards some social group tends to evaluate its members in a specific manner and that is usually simply because they belong to that group. Here their individual traits or behaviors are not considered, they are disliked because they belong to a particular social group. However, in a few cases, they are liked.

In this context of viewing prejudice as a special type of attitude, two important

points are to be noted. Persons who are prejudiced toward specific groups tend to process information about these groups, quite differently from the way, they process in format ion about o ther groups. Information that is consistent with their prejudiced views gets more attention and such views get reinforced. Further, it may include negative feelings or emotions, on the part of prejudiced persons. Thus prejudiced persons tend to act in negative ways toward those who are the objects of prejudice.

For several reasons, blatant forms of discrimination- negative actions toward people of different religious or ethnic groups – are on the rise. In many situations such expression of prejudice in social behavior has become increasingly subtle. Therefore concerted efforts in modifying our beliefs and values are necessary to bring in changes in this social menace. Parents and teachers have a positive role to play to reduce the extent of prejudiced behaviors and discriminations in our society. This column is contributed by U K Athikkal, a Life Skill Coach and Certified Trainer and Practitioner of N L P. Complete the Story: A Contemporary Theatre

Photo of the Week

Yours Truly Theatre invites you to their Interactive play Bhagwaan Dhoondo on

th16 May 2010. This play will give the audience a different experience, the audience get to end the last few scenes of the play which is then enacted by the actors on the stage. This play is a contemporary play different from traditional plays. This is the only theatrical group in India to be doing this style of theatre called "Complete the story". Their last play "Common Man" was nominated for the International Theatre Festival at Armenia.

Bhagwaan Dhoondo is a English Musical play. The sets of the play have been designed by Anand Kumar, who is a National Award Winner. Music for the play has been done by Band Aagam, who are the winners of reality contest called "oohlalala" judged by A.R. Rahman. The play has been directed by Ranji David and Nandini Rao, who are the nominees for the International Theatre Festival at Armenia.

One of the directors Nandi Rao explains that the theme of the play is centered around youth and his/her

aspirations. It is about exploring a journey in the city, in search of: a moment of happiness, never ending quest of self identity, definition of success, a passion which keeps us ticking, a calling we wait for, chasing dreams, in pursuit of truth, seeking the m e a n i n g o f l i f e .The co-director Ranji David says, “The common man has more to learn from this play.” When the theatrical plays are dieing down, this interactive play breathes life into modern theatres. This though provoking play involves and engages you into a surreal world which is visually striking, musically resonating and e m o t i o n a l l y a b s o r b i n g . It resembles our lives in a city that we exist.

The same play Bhagwaan Dhoondo witnessed a houseful session when enacted on March 28, 2010. Yours Truly Theatre is expecting to enact the play successfully once again.

Sourav GangulyFormer Indian captain Mr. Sourav Ganguly is absolutely correct in uttering 'People do more politics than politicians' in “Headlines Today” television channel program. He is of the opinion that it is not politicians alone who could spoil any sport but any common man could also be of the same caliber. He is not against any politicians who are governing cricket body. Ganguly is a young man who is interested in climbing up the ladder in Indian cricket board and so he is not offensive in his statements. But we have nice things to learn from his statement, 'people do more politics.'

Given that politics runs through cricket in India, politics in corporate sectors, politics in defence sectors, politics even in a small establishment have slowed down the growth of the country.

We have got ill reputation for politics. We need to remember that politicians have also come from the people. People also indulge in corruption and taint the politicians. We often notice the candidate's attitude and promises before election and the change of attitude post election with corrupt nature surfacing. This has been more prevalent in the independent India since 1950s. People

find excuses in politics saying, “once you join politics, you have to be like this.”

Today we find the names of leaders like Dr. Manmohan Singh, Dr. Joshi, Mr. Vajpayee, etc. in the list of honest politicians. Nothing prevents Mr. Sharad Pawar, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav and others from being uncorrupt or straightforward. It is only the individual who chooses to become corrupt. If you think you can survive only if you are corrupt, you will remain corrupt. If you think you can be straight forward, ample opportunities
