A short circuit in the first floor triggered this fire. There were only around 20-25 people in the entire building when the incident took place at 11 am under the hot sun. Though it was not considered to be a fire of massive scale, it took more time to expel the murky fumes out of the building by breaking glass panes. A few people who ran upstairs and reached terrace were spotted by people walking around the street. Absolutely there was no panicking and they were informed that there was nothing to worry. The fire brigade could come on time and put off the fire since the traffic was less. However, it leaves a doubt among people if this kind of rescue mechanism would save people all the time. Bangalore: Eight students whose science and engineering projects won recognition at the India Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) competition, have been selected to represent the country in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) to be held in San Jose, California from May 9 to 14. Over 1500 students from more than 50 countries will participate in the pre-college Science fair organized by Society for Science and the Public (SSP). More than 1200 projects would be presented by students and would be vying for USD 4 million in awards and scholarships, according to a press release. Intel South Asia, Director (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bedi said that ''the success of these students reveals their scientific aptitude, research acumen and innovation in the country. The finalists from India demonstrate the capability of this country to cultivate the next generation of innovators, scientists and entrepreneurs.''

Indian Students in California Science Fair K.R. Puram With only 44%

exercised their franchise in the BBMP election last month, there was a widespread belief that many rich and well of people did not bother to vote. Though it is true to a great extent, there are reports that many common man one belonging to middle class and lower middle class failed to vote. One Mr. Ramkumar, a shop owner in Annasandrapalya said, “We are bored of elections and voting. We see nothing great in terms of developments. However many in the close quarters of political parties cite a few tar roads and other constructions as their achievement.” People in Annasandrapalya in general are hopeful about their candidate. The candidates who won in the wards (9 wards) under K.R. Puram are rated better than the candidates won in the Marathalli-Kundalahalli wards (9 wards). Many people are of the opinion that the public have better access to the elected candidates in wards belonging to K.R. Puram rather than Marathal l i -Kundalahal l i ward candidates.

Who did not vote in the BBMP election?

Monkey Business

Marathalli: There are reports that parties wooed candidates to vote by paying Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000. How for this money really helped in getting the votes? Many agree that they receive money from political parties. People are motivated to go to the polling booth once money is received. It looks like only between 5 and 10% of people who received money took initiative to reach the polling booth. This percentage of people are not really interested in voting for any particular candidate. Either they do not have faith in the candidate or they do not know if the candidate is good. So the money could have worked only to turn 3% from the above mentioned 5 to 10% in favor of the party that paid money. For a question put to a daily wage employee “Did you vote for the party that paid money?”, he says, “Not necessarily. To anyone, what difference does it make.”

The influence of money could have slightly increased the margin of votes but not to a great extent. However, this practice of wooing voters by offering money is a unhealthy practice in the largest democracy like India.

There are many residents in Marathalli, AECS Layout and Whitefield

complain that their names are not in the voting list. “ I voted for 18 years but my name has not been there in the list for the past two years. I complained about it to the concerned authority and submitted letters. But still my name does not appear in the list.” says a senior citizen staying in AECS Layout B Block.

“My name and my wife's name are surprisingly left out in the voter's list.” says a businessman staying in Immidihalli, Whitefield.

Errors of these kind make a significant difference in the margin of vote. The corporators who have won or lost by a thin margin of between 100 and 300 have reason to worry if the above mentioned factors really affected them.

Did Money Change Election Results in the BBMP Election?

MIND WORKS-32What Do You Mean By PERSONALITY?

By UK Athikkal

-----------Josna and Kamala both failed their midterm examination in psychology, but they reacted in different ways. When Josna saw her grade, she felt sick to her stomach and had to fight back tears. She cut her next class, rushed home, and shut herself up in her room to lie in bed, stare at the ceiling, and feeling inadequate. Kamala, on the other hand, was all bluster. She too cut her next class after learning her result, but she ran to the cafeteria to meet her friends and make loud jokes about her stupid psychology professor.

Why did Josna and Kamala act so differently in similar situations? Speaking loosely, there is something inside people that makes them think, feel and act differently. And that “something inside” is what we mean by personality. It accounts for both the differences and the consistencies in an individual's behavior over times and in different situations.

For the layman personality refers to the external physical appearance. But for psychologists personality is a dynamic whole psychological system, which includes their walk, talk, speech, motives, values, moods, actions and reactions. The word psychology comes from the Latin word persona, meaning “mask”. Just as masks distinguished one character from another in ancient Greek and Roman plays, your personality distinguishes you from other people.

Behavior is complex and it is changed by experience. Behavior changes throughout the life span and thus change is the only constant thing.

But there is another side to the story. While people change with experience, they also show “consistency”- tendency to behave, think and feel in certain ways over a long period of time. In English we have number of words to describe the personality like shy, irritable, aggressive, dominant sociable, etc. personality can be defined as the unique and consistent pattern of behavior, thoughts and feelings in a wide variety of situations over a long period of time. To put it in simple terms personality is the unique, relatively consistent pattern of thinking, feeling and behaving.

There are number of factors that interact and develop the personality of an individual. They are – a) biological factors, b) physical environment c) psychological factors d) familial determinants e) social class and f) cultural factors. An understanding and appreciation of these factors help us to develop our own personality.

Jurasic Baby: Rip Roaring Comedy

Photo of the Week

It is human to expect a human to grow one day old every day. But if a baby grows three years old every day after its birth and reaches almost 30 years by the time of discharge from the maternity hospital what will happen. The floodgates of humour would be heartily opened if Crazy Mohan writes the script. Maadhu and Mythili are a happily married couple except for the fact that they are not bestowed with any children. A Maanthric from Allepey prescribes an herbal medicine for begetting children. As it turns out he has committed a gross blunder in its formulation which renders the new born with the strange phenomenon as narrated in the beginning. Though the Scientists cum medicologists manage to arrest the super growth, yet, Maadhu and Mythli are left with a Jurassic Baby who is mentally ten days old but physically 35 years old. The strange experience of the parents to bring up such a baby cum man is told with rip roaring humour. About the Writer… An engineer by qualification, an artist by interest and a humorist by birth, 'Crazy' Mohan's

creative portfolio contains more than 20 hilarious stage plays, 25 super hit films and over 150 short stories in popular magazines. All his works are marked by a Sparkling wit & spontaneity.

The New Mayor Begins on a Good NoteBy Murali Krishna

Bangalore: The new mayor Mr. S.K. Nataraj is known to many as a learned and good candidate. He worked with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and is also a close associate of Transport minister R Ashok. From this year, the mayor's post has been reserved for a general category candidate, and the deputy mayor's for a Scheduled Caste candidate. Mr. N Dayanand was elected as the Deputy Mayor.

To serve the growing population of the metropolitan city, the new mayor requires determination. There has always been difficulties for people in the growing

metropolitan city. All the 198 corporators do not have a clean record and so materializing the civic work all over the city is a tough job in the first place. Besides, there seems to be an involvement of other state ministers in the BBMP making corporators not so independent. In many wards people voted for BJP candidates by taking into consideration the local MLA. Many voters do not know about the candidates. The elected corporators are not easily accessible by the public. i.e the candidate's public relationship is only so so. A few sincere workers in BJP are disappointed for not getting a seat to

contest for corporator post. The new mayor is ambitious to

keep the city green. The people of Bangalore are eager to see him in action. The BBMP has bills of Rs. 1,348 crore pending. The new mayor is ambitious to keep the city green. His mentioning about scientific disposal of garbage is really worth. This initiative will save people from facing serious health problems in the future. It is good to hear Mr. Nataraj talking tough “I am aware that many of the Palike's properties are greatly under-valued. Contracts with the parties will be reviewed and rates revised. Property-grabbers, too, won't be allowed to go scot-free''.

Borewell Engines in Full SwingMarathalli: Owing to water scarcity in Bangalore many opt for borewell. Everyday in and around Marathalli, Whitefield and the surrounding areas, about 3 to 5 borewells are drilled.

Major borewell companies are busy drilling waterwells to fix submersible pumps. The latest machines on mobile vehicles undertake the work and complete it in just about 8 hours. More borewells within a smaller area – say one in eight buildings - will completely drain the water from earth and there will soon be a depletion in water table.
