Celebrating thePast and Securingthe Future

2018 is a Chai year, as the number 18 in Hebrew letters forms the word "chai", meaning "life".

Since 1934, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has been actively involved in preserving, saving and extending life for thousands of people throughout Quebec, regardless of race, colour or ethnic origin.

Today, 84 years later, the JGH plays a central and critical role in Montreal's healthcare system. This, in large measure, is the result of the dedi-

cation of its medical practitioners, nursing and ancillary staff, the vision and entre-preneurial spirit of its leaders and the generosity of its community.

While 2015 brought in new and additional changes to the structure of Quebec's health system, the JGH continues to play a central role. The Emergency Depart-ment, the Institute of Community and Family Psychiatry, the Segal Cancer Centre, the Azrieli Heart Centre, the Lady Davis Institute, the Eileen & Louis Dubrovsky Molecular Pathology and Microbiology Centre leading the way to personalized medicine, the latest robotic surgery procedures and many other specialized depart-ments and services all fortify the JGH’s place at the forefront of best medicine for the people of our city.

Hospitals of the future may be different from what we know today. The JGH is fortunate that its medical, administrative and volunteer leadership have both the vision and determination to ensure that our institution not only remains at the fore-front of medical innovation, but also ensures best practices in all its activities.

02 JGH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17

The JGH Foundation Outstanding Service Award is bestowed upon exceptional individuals who have been actively involved in and made significant contributions in terms of promoting the mission of the Foundation, advancing its goals, and contributing to the betterment of the Jewish General Hospital. This year, on the occa-sion of the Foundation’s Annual General Meeting held on September 18, 2017, the Award was presented to two remarkable individuals: Pierre Brosseau and Ronny Steinberg.

Pierre Brosseau is a perfect example of an individual who has made a major and significant contribution to the work of the Foundation. A generous and multi-talented businessman, Pierre could have volunteered to lend his expertise to any charitable organization. Thankfully, he chose the Jewish General Hospital, which has been extremely beneficial for all of us!

Always well groomed and in fashionable attire, Pierre is the embodiment of a dynamic entrepreneur. He exudes energy, creativity and action.

Pierre joined the Foundation as a Trustee in 2012, and was elected to the Board of Directors and its Executive Committee in 2014. He was appointed to the position of Secretary in 2016. He also did yeomen’s work as Vice-Chair of the hospital’s Capital Campaign.

In the past six years, Pierre took it upon himself to organize the Festin de Babette, a gastronomic event that has raised over $3 million in support of Alzheimer’s disease research at the JGH.

His charming personality, his sharp intellect and fine character continue to elevate our Foundation deliberations.

Volunteers are essential to the ongoing

success of the JGH Foundation. The JGH

Foundation Outstanding Service Award

was created to recognize exemplary

service, to encourage volunteers to

contribute to the institution and to

promote the value of volunteerism and

community service to the individual

and to society at large.

Ronny Steinberg was appointed a Trustee in 2012 and has served as a member of our Board of Directors and Executive Committee since 2015. He is also a member of the Foundation's Grants Committee.

In 2011, he accepted the position of Chair of the Audit Committee and has held this position until today. His attention to detail, his understanding of the complex administrative, political and financial issues confronting the Foundation, the Hospital and government have greatly contributed to better management, which in turn advanced the Hospital’s and Foundation's mission.

He conducts his meetings with efficiency, intelligence and grace. Under his tutelage, audit meetings, where 25 to 30 pages of data are reviewed by 10 to 12 financial wizards, begin promptly and end 60 minutes later... not 61.

His involvement with the JGH includes membership in the Hospital's Advisory Committee and the President's Advisory Committee. In addition, he is also a member of the CIUSSS Finance Committee. And if this wasn't enough, he has now accepted to be the Foundation's Treasurer!

Ronny is a great example of the adage "if you want a job done right, give it to a busy man." We are fortunate indeed to have him in our ranks.

Pierre Brosseau and Ronny Steinberg are truly wonderful role models of what informed and committed volunteers can be and can accomplish for the benefit of the Hospital, its patients and the entire community. Congratulations!

POWERTO HEALCAMPAIGN PROGRESS REPORT

In 2016-2017, the JGH Foundation’s “Power to Heal”

campaign—its most ambitious Capital Campaign to date,

with a goal in excess of $250 million—continued to

progress. We are proud and gratified to report that over

$217 million in pledges and direct gifts has been raised

as of March 31, 2017—now approaching $250 million as

this publication goes to press. This growth is obviously the

result of the generous spirit of our donors and the dedication

of our leaders: Campaign Co-Chairs Harvey Levenson,

Christine Marchildon and Bernard Stotland, FCPA, FCA,

our devoted Vice-Chairs Ralph Benatar, Gaby Bitton,

André Bureau, O.C., Q.C., Jean Bureau, Pierre Brosseau,

The campaign has had a profound impact on the JGH’s

ability to provide outstanding, quality medical care to our

population. This has been manifested in so many ways, be it

the best and latest equipment, the renovation of facilities,

support for research and most importantly, the recruitment

of physicians, clinician scientists, nurses and allied health

professionals. In the following pages please note how every

dollar donated to the "Power to Heal" campaign makes an

important difference for our patients.

Our Capital Campaign theme,

You have the Power to Heal, expresses

the very essence and core of what the JGH

and its supporters are all about.

It sums up in a few words our common

goal of achieving better health and better

health care for the people of Montreal and

Quebec, now and in the future.

It represents the fact that each of us is a

stakeholder and plays an important role

when it comes to ensuring the continued

health and well-being of those we love and,

indeed, the entire community.

It stands for the power that each one

of us has to make a difference and what

can be accomplished when our hospital’s

leaders, medical staff and generous donors

come together for a common purpose.

Bringing the best and brightestdoctors and researchers to Montrealand Quebec, and supportingtheir workDr. François Mercier joined the JGH Division of Hematology as an attending physician and clinician scientist, and the Lady Davis Institute (LDI) as a principal investigator in blood cancers in early 2017. After finishing his training in hematol-ogy at the JGH and McGill University as Hematology Chief Resident, he spent the past seven years on a research fellowship at Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital where he worked on understanding how blood stem cells regenerate and mutate to form leukemias. His specific area of interest is acute myeloid leukemia (AML). At the LDI, Dr. Mercier will pursue a clinical study to employ single cell RNA sequencing on cell samples taken

from patients with AML in order to distinguish between the cells of those patients who respond favourably to certain drug therapies as opposed to those who do not. As well, he is employing the revolutionary gene editing technology CRISPR to see whether splicing genes associ-ated with AML can eliminate the disease. Dr. Mercier will also be performing clinical duties and teaching in outpa-tient and inpatient care in clinical hematology, as well as clinical research in collaboration with Dr. Sarit Assouline, a leader in clinical trials in malignant hematology based at the Segal Cancer Centre.

expanded CRU is also in a better position to support the Eileen & Louis Dubrovsky Molecular Pathology and Microbiology Centre in achiev-ing the full molecular characteriza-tion of a tumour, the main challenge in developing targeted therapies.

New bedside terminals linked to a modified Endovault Oncology platform with added functionalities are allowing all caregivers at the Segal Cancer Centre to generate electronic notes, order tests, order and document chemotherapy administration in real time, manage chemotherapy treatments and share vital patient information with the rest of the medical team at the JGH. Having access to a complete electronic record of a patient at the bedside saves time, enhances the quality and accessibility of vital patient information, increases clinical efficiency and helps prevent costly errors, resulting in improved coordination and continuity of care, and safety for the patients. The new bedside terminals are also designed to be used for patient education and allow patients to make calls and watch TV during the time of treatment.

Providing the finest facilities, equipmentand programs to deliver excellence andmeet the changing healthcare needsof Quebecers

Located in the space that used to house the Emergency Department in Pavilion D, the fully renovated and computerized Sandra & Steven Mintz Nephrology Centre is enabling Dr. Mark Lipman and his team to ensure the provision of life-saving treatments to the grow-ing number of patients with kidney failure. It contains 37 spacious hemodialysis stations with enhanced privacy, each of which includes a hemodialysis machine, a multi-function chair, internet access for a personal computer or tablet, and a bedside terminal that provides patients with secure, touchscreen access to free basic TV and internet services as well as to numerous premium entertainment options. With its up-to-date isolation areas, upgraded water filtration system, dedicated pick-up and drop-off area and family meeting rooms, the Centre provides patients, who must come to the hospital three times per week to receive a treatment that usually requires four hours, with the safe, comfortable and emotionally supportive environment that is

conducive to a superior quality of care and patient experience. The Centre also features a state-of-the-art video conference room for teaching and education. It is used to provide specialized training that focuses on the complex technology involved, as well as the psychosocial component of helping patients and their families adjust to dialysis treatment.

The newly upgraded Maria Saputo Monticciolo Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at the Segal Cancer Centre enables more cancer patients to have access to new, cutting-edge treatments and drugs via participa-tion in clinical trials. This process is critical for gathering the data necessary to determine those conditions under which the drugs will prove most effective and to offer better outcomes to patients for whom more conventional treat-ments have run their course. In addition to providing more support to other JGH clinical trials, the

Page 10: layout ENGjgh-foundation.s3.amazonaws.com/production/2018/06/27/19/...18 in Hebrew letters forms the word "chai", meaning "life". Since 1934, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has

The newly renovated and expanded 6,000-square-foot Pathology Laboratory, on the first floor of Pavilion G, is enabling the JGH Department of Pathology to rapidly perform a higher volume of vital diagnostic evaluations of tissue samples. With more space, improved mechanical systems and the addition of a high-performance Laboratory Information System, the upgraded laboratory provides clinicians with the reliable results they need to more quickly establish accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment plans. It also is enhancing the availability of information that is essential to monitor-ing and preventing disease, as well as assisting with research throughout the hospital. Considering that about 60 percent of clinical decisions in a hospital are based on results provided by the Pathology Division, especially in the area of cancer, the new Pathology Laboratory is an indispensable partner of the Segal Cancer Centre and plays a central role at the JGH in improving the quality and extending the lifespan of a growing number of cancer patients.

Acquisition of an infection control and antimicrobial stewardship integrated system for the Infectious Diseases Clinic. This state-of-the-art software technology allows for real time surveillance and reporting on hospital-acquired infections as well as ensuring a permanent watch on antimicrobial prescriptions and laboratory orders. It constitutes an invaluable tool for reducing the incidence and prevalence of infec-tions and facing the challenge of overconsumption and growing resistance to antibiotics, ultimately resulting in improved patient care and safety. The system will also facilitate rapid intervention in case of an outbreak and reinforce the hospital’s collaboration with the CHUM and CUSM, which are both using the same technologies.

Upgrade of Chartmaxx, the fully computerized and digitized patient record system which is used to track patient test results and chart all care activities across the hospi-tal. By providing quick, online, intuitive 24/7 access to critical patient information to physicians and staff, the upgraded system allows for better communication and coordination between all hospital departments, improving overall efficiency and workflow, resulting in shorter waiting times and enhanced patient care.

Acquisition of a digital Direct Visualization System for the Division of Gastroenterology. This innovative technology provides direct visual access via an endoscope to the bile ducts and pancreas, helping to obtain an accurate diagnosis and deliver effective treatment options for diseases and conditions such as gallstones and suspected malignan-cies, including pancreatic cancer, in one procedure. Direct visualization of the biliary tree also provides important information that cannot be obtained by other diagnostic modalities such as an abdominal ultrasound, a CT scan, or a MRI. Moreover, the system can be used to obtain biopsy specimens, destroy hardened masses like kidney stones and gallstones, and perform proce-dures involving irrigation and suction of the biliary tract and pancreatic ducts in an easier and more effective way.

Page 11: layout ENGjgh-foundation.s3.amazonaws.com/production/2018/06/27/19/...18 in Hebrew letters forms the word "chai", meaning "life". Since 1934, the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) has

A new, dedicated portable ultrasound machine is allowing the team of Internal Medicine specialists at the new Diagnostic and Treatment Clinic (DTC) within the Medical Day Hospital in Pavilion K to deliver rapid, accurate and patient-centered expert clinical care at the bedside. This advanced ultrasound machine enables physicians to diagnose why a patient is short of breath or having chest pain or abdominal pain without having to wait weeks or months for dedicated radiology studies, and to perform invasive interventions to confirm a diagnosis and provide therapy, all during the same visit without unnecessary delays. As a result, the DTC stands out as a much better alternative for ambulatory patients who need expedited care (imaging, minor procedures, etc.) and who might otherwise end up being admitted through the Emergency Department.

Ongoing support for the Peter Brojde Lung Cancer Centre is strengthening the patient-centred facility's ability to provide the growing number of lung cancer patients being treated at the JGH with all of the services they need in a single, dedicated location. The Centre is dedicated to holistic and personalized patient care that enhances treatment efficacy and the quality of life of patients with lung cancer, and their families, by com-bining the best that conventional medicine and modern science has to offer with practices relating to diet, yoga, exercise, Ti Ji , psycho/social counselling and therapies foundin Traditional Chinese Medicine. Working in conjunction with clinical departments throughout the Segal Cancer Centre and JGH, the Centre provides a comprehensive, coordi-nated approach to care that seeks to detect tumours earlier and stage them more accurately, provide better and more targeted treat-ments, and integrate traditional Chinese medicine into standard treatments. Special programs are also devoted to family membersand caregivers. The Centre also promotes prevention strategies to reduce lung cancer incidence and conducts cutting-edge research in experimental therapeutics to improve outcomes and quality of life for all patients with lung cancer, especially those with advanced disease undergoing treatment.

Acquisition of two handheld, portable diagnostic Spirometers with disposable mouthpieces for the Department of Respiratory Physiology. These devices are specifically designed to measure a range of respiratory parameters and to monitor the saturation of oxygen in the blood and the heart beat. They play a vital role in the diagnosis of certain types of lung disease, such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema; finding the cause of shortness of breath; assessing the effect of contaminants as well as of medication on lung function and measuring progress in disease treatment.

Inauguration of the Department of Psychiatry’s Mental Health Education Centre, comprising 5 offices (9 work spaces) designed for trainees to safely evaluate and treat patients, and 2 teaching/conference rooms connected by a two-way mirror to allow staff to directly observe residents interviewing patients and then provide them with constructive feedback. These rooms are also equipped with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology for deliver-ing lectures to the various trainees. The Centre will allow the Depart-ment of Psychiatry to accept a greater number of trainees in the fields of psychiatry, family medicine, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy and social work, over and beyond the more than 200 trainees from various CEGEPs and universi-ties already participating in its educational program.

proving invaluable for the speedy diagnosis and management of patients who come to the ER for bladder-related conditions. Two adapted mobile carts were also acquired to facilitate the use of the device at the bedside throughout the Emergency Department.

Acquisition of an intramuscular lead (thin wires) and a neurostimulator along with accessories for the Division of Colorectal Surgery’s Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS) Program. SNS involves the implanta-tion of a permanent neurostimulator that provides patients suffering from severe fecal incontinence with a means to control the involuntary loss of solid or liquid stool, helping them live a fairly normal life again. The leading-edge, minimally inva-sive procedure has excellent success rates, minimal complication rates, and sustained long-term positive outcomes with a dramatic impact on quality of life.

Continued support of the Youth Mental health Coordinator part-time position at the Department of Psychiatry. This Coordinator is responsible for facilitating referrals and providing liaison services to the community, and plays an essential role in reducing the number of youth on the waiting list for psychiatric screening, assessing more youthper week and providing ongoing therapy to more youth whose level of distress and dysfunction is too severe for first line services. Other improvements include: the launchof the Aminy online portal where patients can access information and communicate with their therapists in an accessible, patient centered format; and the conversion of the Department of Psychiatry’s paper medical records to a digital format, allowing for the sharing and use of patient information by other hospital departments. With electronic medi-cal records, patient care and safety is improved by avoiding duplication, speeding up decision-making, reducing the potential for lost information or decisions made on erroneous or incomplete informa-tion, and providing a greater means to collect and report on the clinical outcome measures that are used to monitor, evaluate and improve the quality of care. Monthly reward / recognition luncheons for kids at the Centre for Child Development and Mental Health were also made possible thanks to a generous donor.

Karine Choquet, a PhD candidate in human genetics at McGill University supervised by Dr. Claudia Kleinman from the Lady Davis Institute (LDI), was named the recipient of the

3rd Annual National Bank Excellence in Research Award. This award has been established by the National Bank to advance medical research in the area of molecular pathology as part of a longstanding commit-ment to the Jewish General Hospital (JGH). Karine Choquet works in the crucial domain of bioinformatics applied to neurodevelopment and neurodegenerative diseases, such as leukodystrophies which affect one in 7,000 children and remain incur-able. The National Bank Molecular Pathology bursary will help set a momentum for increased collabora-tions between bioinformaticians at the LDI, other researchers, and financial informaticians working with large datasets.

The purchase of specialized (state-of-the-art medication distribution machines and refrigerators for medications and food, a bariatric commode and wheelchair, a second patient lift) and basic equipment (portable hampers for the isolation gowns, two racks for food trays, a second high tech printer, a second blood sampling cart, and an extra medication cart) has made it possible for the staff of the two nursing units on the 7th floor of Pavilions C and D to transition smoothly to the new, larger and more modern CD7 Medicine Nursing Unit. The acquisition of this basic but much needed equipment allows the Nursing Unit to continue to provide the best and most compassionate

care possible to patients who suffer from various conditions that are not serious enough to warrant admission but must be closely monitored and treated. Fully 75% of patients are over 75 years old with complex medical needs. Many are highly vulnerable people with social problems, no support at home, and who have nowhere else to go.

Support for the McPeak/Sirois clinical trials in breast cancer. The goal of this project, shared by the four major Quebec hospital research centres (JGH, CHUM, MUHC, CHU du Quebec), is to improve care given to patients suffering from breast cancer through better access to clinical trials. Two unique clinical trials were launched in October 2016, one on molecular changes occur-ring when taking a new medication and the other on a diagnostic test designed to help physicians deter-mine if a medication should be taken before or after surgery.

Inauguration of the Azrieli Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Unit located on the third floor of Pavilion K, initiating a new standard of care for critically ill patients or those who have just had major surgery, both of whom need constant monitoring and care from a specialized team.

“If it wasn't for thoughtful donors like you, we simply would not be able to continue to provide our patients with the attention and

quality of care they deserve. The pieces of equipment that were

acquired for our unit don't seem like much and don't cost a lot, but they make a world of difference for our patients and staff. Thank you!”

Creation of the Nathan and Nettie Yentin Endowment Fund for Hospital Priorities which serves as a general endowment for the JGH, ensuring a stable, recurrent source of funding for vital patient programs and special equipment for which there is no regular funding source. An endowment fund is one where the capital is invested in perpetuity and managed by an investment commit-tee of the JGH Foundation. The interest from the fund is distributed annually based on a specific designa-tion of the donor or to hospital priorities defined by the Hospital and the Foundation. Thus, the endow-ment ensures a flow of funding, year after year, and makes long-term planning, financial stability and successful functioning possible. Such an endowment is critical to the future of the hospital and its ability to continue to deliver excellence in patient care, research and teaching that will benefit Montrealers and Quebecers for generations to come.

They have contributed to enhancing the comfort and safety of patients and staff.

Ongoing support for a feasibility / safety study of Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) for the treatment of early-stage breast cancers, being conducted by the Division of Radio-Oncology. IORT allows for the delivery of the entire course of radiation treatment to the patient at the time of surgery, with great precision to the desired location in only a few minutes, thereby reducing treatment time from the standard 3 to 6 weeks to a single exposure. It also offers very good dose homogeneity and reduces exposure of normal tissues (for instance, lungs, heart and skin) to radiations. IORT is powered by advanced brachytherapy technol-ogy that can be configured and adapted to treat cancer anywhere in the body, including gynecological cancers, eye cancers and non-melanoma skin cancer. To date, Dr. Te Vuong and her team have successfully treated 7 patients with early-stage breast cancer and one patient with skin cancer using this new radiotherapy technique, as well as 20 patients with colorectal cancer through the development of a specially designed applicator. The JGH expects to treat about 60 patients per year with IORT and will be the first in Canada to offer access to this unique and practical treatment that greatly improves patient care and quality of life.

The plan is to establish a comprehensive outpa-tient Psychogeriatric Treatment Program based on the current best practices, to develop and validate innovative treatment interventions, to provide an environment for the development of knowledge and the academic training of all profession-als involved in the mental health care of the elderly. The Centre aims to become an international leader in the research of late-life psychiatric disorders, with multiple ongoing innovative clinical trials and other research projects.

Ongoing support for a landmark clinical trial of a novel combination treatment for type 1 diabetes, being conducted jointly by investigators at the Lady Davis Institute of the JGH and at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Based largely on pioneering research by Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg, President and CEO of West‐Central Montreal Health and Executive Director of the JGH, the treatment combines a

specific agent to restore normal insulin secretion in the pancreas with a drug to prevent the autoimmune system from rejecting the newly formed insulin secreting islets to treat patients with longstanding type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body's immune system destroys the beta cells that make insulin within the pancreatic islets and affected people require insulin therapy to survive. The ground-breaking study is an important step towards finding, for the first time ever, an effective therapy for this chronic disease that often begins in childhood and affects over 1.5 million people in North America.

A new integrated proteogenomics platform, comprising two state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instruments and a Cloud Connect software license, is enabling the McGill/JGH Proteomics Centre in the Eileen and Louis Dubrovsky Molecular Pathol-ogy and Microbiology Centre to bring genomic and proteomic data, and analysis tools, together in a cloud computing environment to facilitate alignment, data storage, bioinformatics data processing, and the discovery of biomarkers. The platform also enables researchers to share results instantly and collabo-rate with other investigators world-wide. Dr. Rene Zahedi, a renowned expert in phosphoproteomics, was also recruited as the Group Leader of the Warren Y. Soper Charitable Trust McGill Translational Proteomics Program at the Proteomics Centre. The JGH now has a fully functional and well-staffed state-of-the-art proteomics facility, which is currently equipped with 5 mass spectrometers, and 6 people, including 2 graduate students from McGill. Transforming medical care, diagnosis and hospital quality and efficiency through the acquisition of the best information technology. The future of medicine, the ability to measure outcomes and the implementation of best practices are all driven by specialized information systems created for these purposes. Among immediate requirements are the upgrade of the hospital’s Citrix system, providing clinicians with instant access to patient informa-tion as they roam across facilities, devices and networks; the purchase of a Virtual Desktop Infra-structure (VDI) software program to create efficiency and speed for our doctors' access to patient information; and the acquisition of an essential radiology management system.

Renovation of the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, which will provide a safer, more secure and functional environment for psychiatric inpatients and for staff. At the same time, the stress on family mem-bers will be reduced, knowing that their loved ones are being cared for in an environment that promotes healing.

Building of the Day Hospital of the Department of Psychiatry, which will enable patients experienc-ing a mental health crisis to receive immediate care instead of waiting at the Emergency Depart-ment. The goals of Day Hospital treatment are to treat acute symptoms and to help the patient function as autonomously as possible again through individual, occupational therapy and various group therapies.

Phase 2 of the relocation, consolidation and expansion of the Sandra & Steven Mintz Nephrology Centre in a single, larger area. This will streamline services and allow for the addition of hemodialysis stations and centralization of kidney treatment services, offices and clinics, ensuring the provision of life-saving treatments to the growing number of patients with kidney disease.

Ongoing support for the critically acclaimed Program for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia (PADD) and the JGH/McGill Memory Clinic. The clinic is the largest of its kind in Canada and provides unparalleled expertise in the early diag-nosis and treatment of memory disorders and dementia.

The achievements resulting from the Power to Heal campaign are wonderful examples of how the JGH Foundation enters into partnerships with committed donors to build on the government’s basic funding and improve access while providing the best care for all. Thousands of patients and their loved ones have benefited from these major advances, and many more stand to benefit, as the Foundation continues to empower the JGH staff to excel.

Maintaining the highest quality of care and meeting the healthcare needs of the population are becoming more and more challenging in the wake of severe budget cuts and the heavy demand for enhanced treatment, care and accessibility stemming from the rising prevalence of chronic and age-related diseases. These, combined with a serious decline in the budgets and allocations of granting agencies for medical research, are adding to the critical importance of our Foundation’s efforts.

With the renewed support of our community of donors and volunteers, our capital campaign will continue to gain momentum and fuel many more advances that will result in enhanced healthcare outcomes for all patients. Our current vital Initiatives are part of our plan to build the hospital of the future with the very best people, equipment, facilities and programs to meet the changing and ever-increasing healthcare needs of Quebecers and overcome the challenges facing our healthcare system as a whole. The following vital initiatives are currently under way and rely on private support to reach fruition:

Critical ongoing support for the Lady Davis Institute and its leading-edge investigations into the causes and potential treatments for the most common illnesses. Donors have the opportunity to support one specific researcher or an entire research axis of the LDI for one to three years.

As part of the third phase in the construction of Pavilion K and with emergency and critical care services now relocated to Pavilion K, additional funds are required to renovate and equip the vacated areas in the main hospital to allow exist-ing services to be expanded or new services to be added. Among these is the addition of a new JGH/LDI Clinical Research Centre, which is being developed with a matching federal government grant. This centre will provide an operating platform for transformative clinical research rang-ing from population-based studies to a multi-disciplinary clinical trials program. It will include the creation of a Healthcare Innovation Incubator and Ideas Lab.

Relocation of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care (CETAC) to a dedicated and expanded facility on the 3rd floor of Pavilion B. This will help to streamline the delivery of care, increase the capacity to train thrombosis fellows and graduate students, and empower world-class research, contributing to reducing the incidence of blood clots and associated disease-related and treatment-related complications. It will also raise awareness about the importance of safe and effective thrombosis prevention and treatment throughout the Quebec healthcare system.

Construction of a 6,000-square-foot subsidized daycare centre that can accommodate 80 children, to facilitate the work-family balance of staff. The availability of this onsite service will play an increasing role in motivating, recruiting and retaining qualified staff in a highly competitive environment.

Expansion and renovation of the Lieberman Family Geriatrics Outpatient Clinic to allow for improved and quicker evaluation, treatment and follow-up services for one of the most vulnerable and fastest growing segments of the population.

Continued growth and improvement of the McGill/JGH Proteomics Centre at the Segal Cancer Centre of the JGH and continued devel-opment of a Canada-wide proteomics network, in collaboration with University of Victoria—paving the way for great progress in the development of new diagnostic tools and innovative, targeted therapies for cancer and, ultimately, many other diseases, including neurodegenerative illnesses (Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease), autoim-mune diseases (Multiple Sclerosis, pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, Type I diabetes, etc.), heart disease, and more. Proteomics uses advanced biotechnology to analyze proteins. It can reveal which proteins have been modified within a mutated gene, pointing to patterns (also called biomarkers) of a particular disease and allowing physicians to devise personalized treat-ments that are most likely to be effective for each individual patient.

It attracted over 200 men and women—aged from 14 to well into their sixties, who had the opportunity to engage at their own pace in energizing exercise

sessions, including yoga, zumba, boot camp, Pilates, spinning, high intensity interval training and tennis, all for a great cause.

CIBC MINDSTRONG raised a fabulous $730,000 net out of gross proceeds of $760,000. This represents a fundraising cost ratio of less than 4%, which makes for one of the most cost efficient fundraising events to be held in Montreal this year. No other event in Quebec has raised awareness and resources for mental health on this scale. Proceeds from CIBC MINDSTRONG went to support the building of the Day Hospital of the Depart-ment of Psychiatry, the renovation of the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, the addition of a Peer and Family Support Centre as well as many crucial mental health programs which help thousands of patients every year.

Under the co-chairmanship of David Bitton, Martin Cauchon, Vincenzo Guzzo and Claude Léger, the 2016 edition of L.A. Luxury Avenue Signature took on an added dimen-sion by combining two events into one. The evening "off-road" event, which took place on March 31, 2016, honoured the world-renowned comedian Gad Elmaleh. Over 400 guests came together at the prestigious Le Salon Richmond 1861 for a "roast" honouring Gad Elmaleh's remarkable 20-year career. The evening, hosted by comedian Rachid Badouri, featured many Québécois humorists and Montreal showbizz celebrities.

This celebration was followed by an adrenaline filled dream day at Circuit ICAR. On May 31, 2016, more than 250 participants had the pleasure of taking the wheel of exotic and powerful cars, enjoying sessions on-track, off-road, karting championships as well as a spectacu-lar helicopter ride around iCAR.

Over and above its glamour, the most extraordinary element of Luxury Avenue is the impact of the funds raised. Both Signature events raced side by side to the finish line and raised $669 200. These funds were used to support the critical care services provided at Pavil-ion K, which is the cornerstone of a concerted effort – by the government, the Hospital and the community – to improve access to life-saving treatment.

The 8th Annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer saw 1,222 riders from across the province set out on their annual trek from Montreal to Quebec City this past July 9 and 10 and raise over $4.4 million for the Segal Cancer Centre at the JGH. Spirits (and temperatures) were high as the participants cycled through the picturesque Quebec countryside supported by hundreds of volun-teers and well-wishers along the route. Funds raised through Quebec’s largest cycling fundraiser support vital cancer research, treatment, care and prevention programs at the JGH and its partners across Quebec.

In the past eight years, the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised over $46 million for cancer programs at the Jewish General Hospital and its partners.

In 2016-17, the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers was rebranded as the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer and its scope broadened to allow walkers to support research for all cancers moving forward. One of the most impor-tant changes was to allow each walker to raised funds for a specific cancer type and/or program they most care about, such as: personalized cancer medicine; breast & gynaecologic cancers; genitourinary cancer including prostate cancer; head & neck cancers; lung cancer; hema-tologic cancers including leukemia and lymphoma; gastrointestinal cancers; skin cancer; the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program; and the CancerNutrition and Rehabilitation Program.

The first edition of OneWalk was held on August 20 and drew 800 participants who enjoyed a one-day, 25-kilometer walk through Montreal’s picturesque streets and communities. Collectively participants raised $1.6 million to support life-saving cancer research, treatment, care and prevention programs for all cancers at the Segal Cancer Centre.

In all, the OneWalk together with the 12 editions of the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers have brought in a grand total of $60 million for the Segal Cancer Centre—contributing to the recruitment of top researchers, the purchase of leading-edge equipment, the development of innovative treatments, the improvement of nursing care and so much more. Participants can derive much satisfaction from the knowledge that they have altered and improved the lives of cancer patients across Quebec!

10th ANNIVERSARY SEGAL CANCER CENTRE GALANovember 15, 2016Honourary Patrons: Emmelle and Alvin SegalCo-Chairs: Charles Sirois and Jonathan Wener, C.M.Benefiting the Segal Cancer Centre

The Jewish General Hospital Foundation’s Gala celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Segal Cancer Centre took place on November 8, 2016 at Arsenal Art Contemporain Gallery, Montreal. Co-chaired by Jonathan Wener (Canderel) and Charles Sirois (Telesystem) with Honourary Patrons Emmelle and Alvin Segal, the elegant event drew over 500 guests, including JGH physicians, researchers, nurses, and community and hospital lead-ers, as well as generous supporters and friends of the Jewish General Hospital.

The Gala raised $1.4 million in support of the Segal Cancer Centre as well as of some clinical trials carried out within the McPeak-Sirois Group of clinical research in breast cancer. The goal of this project, shared by the 4 major Quebec hospital research centres in the fight against breast cancer (JGH, CHU de Quebec, MUHC and CHUM), is to improve care given to patients suffering from breast cancer through better access to clinical trials.

Since it opened in 2006, the Segal Cancer Centre has become the leading cancer treatment centre in Quebec, implementing a focussed and comprehensive approach to fighting cancer through medical treatment, patient care, family support and scientific research. The Centre's research and innovative models of cancer care are now recognized on an international level and the Centre has become a magnet for cancer patients across Quebec. It welcomed over 20,000 patients last year alone.

The Foundation’s revenue comes from four main streams: the Power to Heal capital campaign, the results of which are presented on pages 5 to 19; the contributions garnered from our annual direct mail program; tribute funds; and events.

Our annual direct mail program brought in $1,269,139.98 in donations, which is slightly higher than last year, while 3,137 people enjoyed the benefits of membership in our Governors’ Circle. Our tribute funds, which comprise Honour Funds that celebrate a milestone in someone’s life, and Memorial Funds, established in the memory ofa loved one, raised $992,203.42. Planned gifts in theform of bequests resulted in additional revenues of $9,818,316.01, a huge increase compared to last year. Online donations grew to $699,512.39.

The other major source of revenue comes from events, some of which have declined year to year as they reach the end of their anticipated life cycle.

The 2016 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, now in its eighth year, brought together 1,222 dedicated cyclists from across the province who completed the demanding but rewarding two-day, 230 kilometre journey across southern Quebec. They raised $4.4 million in support of cancer research, prevention and treatment at the Segal Cancer Centre at the JGH, and at the University of Quebec Hospital Centre and the Trois-Rivières Regional Hospital Centre.

The 12th edition of the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers, now called the OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, brought together 800 walkers who collectively raised $1.6 million in support of cancer research, prevention, diagnosis and treatment at the Segal Cancer Centre at the JGH. Together, these events brought in a grand total of close to $60 million since the inception of the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers in 2004.

Other major events hosted by the Foundation during the year also benefited from the leadership, commitment and hard work of devoted and passionate chairs, volunteers and participants who rallied support from every sector of Montreal and beyond. Together these signature events and those organized by grateful patients and otherinterested third parties grossed $5,845,682.11, whichrepresents a sizeable increase of 32.9%.

The Foundation contributed over $7.6 million from endowments and other sources for research and academic support, $13.5 million for patient programs and services, and $8.2 million for the purchase of equipment as well as the construction and renovation of installations within the hospital.
