Page 1: Layout 12 pages - petersburgpilot.com4 hours ago · entertained their ladies and a group of service men who are home on furlough at a dinner at the Elks Hall. After dinner the president,

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will use one or more pri-vate companies to operate ferries dur-ing an ongoing breakdown in state service, the governor said.

Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy said the state needs pri-vate companies to operate ferries to coastal communities, The Anchorage Daily News reported Wednesday.

“We’re going to

have to rely on the private sec-tor as a stopgap to some de-gree,” Dunleavy said Wednesday.

Only one of the state’s fleet of 12 ships is operating, with four laid up in temporary stor-age and seven undergoing overhauls for scheduled or unscheduled work, Depart-ment of Transportation Com-missioner John MacKinnon said.

Coastal towns that cannot be reached by road in the win-ter are reporting food short-ages because of the lack of service by the Alaska Marine Highway System. Hundreds of residents protested in a series of events across the state last week.

The state requested infor-mation earlier this month from companies that might be able to provide interim sailings until state ferries exit the ship-yard. There were three re-sponses, but the state has not executed contracts with any of the companies.

“If the lack of available ships continues, we’re going to engage them,” MacKinnon said.

The transportation depart-ment has not released a firm plan for providing private service, and it is unclear how the state would pay the com-panies.

The ferry Matanuska, which was scheduled to be the only operating mainline vessel in the state, broke down last month.

Establishing a timeline for Matanuska to return to service is “a very complicated issue,” MacKinnon said.

March 5, 1920 Dr. E. O. Rowley and wife, Dr. Gladys Rowley, both natives of New Zealand, and both physicians and surgeons who come to Petersburg highly recommended, arrived here on the Admiral Evans early this week and will locate. Both have expressed themselves as being favorably impressed with the town and people and say that in many ways it compares with their native land.

March 2, 1945 It was guest night at the Rotary meeting on Wednesday. Instead of their usual luncheon Rotarians entertained their ladies and a group of service men who are home on furlough at a dinner at the Elks Hall. After dinner the president, Lester Wingard, introduced the servicemen and recalled some incidents from the not-so-distant time when most of them were in his high school classes. Servicemen present were Art Rosvold, Lee Dempsey, Ragnar Stokke, Conner Kinnear, John Otness and. Vernon Heimdahl.

March 4, 1970 This edition of the Petersburg Press was published at our new quarters - an old house on Sing Lee Alley. The newspaper moved from the alley (sometimes called Indian Street) five years ago. It went up the hill to the new Stokke building on F Street. That move was accomplished without a break in publication. Our new

location is just three doors away from the old Press building. It is a former residence and is being remodeled for our use by its owner, Harvey Gilliland. We hope the residents of Petersburg will bear with us for a week or two while we attempt to get back in our normal muddled method of operation.

March 2, 1995 The lights will dim at the Viking Theatre for the last time Sunday night, when Petersburg loses its big screen.

After more than 25 years, the Viking Theatre on Nordic Drive will close, making way for several new and expanding businesses in its shell.

Grab some popcorn, put up your heels — and watch the Viking Theatre building change into The Four Kings Building. Plans to begin remodeling the Nordic Drive building into a center which will include two retailers and for offices are already in the works.
