TanenbaumCHAT is a school devoted to creating anenvironment where our students can be sociallyconscious, community-minded, academically motivated, and engaged in their Judaism. As parents, we watch ourchildren’s achievements — be it in athletics, academicsor extra-curricular activities — with pride. As alumni, weare proud to have graduated from such a respectedinstitution. As donors, we watch our diverse communitycome together in a shared commitment to Jewish valuesand communal responsibility.
This year saw several developments that will becrucial to our future. The first was, of course, thecompletion of the Kimel Family Education Centre, which marks a huge milestone in the history of theschool. At the same time, we began intensive planningfor the next stage of improvements at our WilmingtonCampus.
Considerable effort went into the Capital Campaignfor the new Kimel Family Education Centre and wecontinue to fundraise to support our Capital Campaignfor both campuses. In addition we hope to secure thelong-term financial health of the school through ‘TheTanenbaumCHAT Legacy EndowmentFund’, which is part of the JewishFoundation of Greater Toronto. Our serious commitment to ongoingfundraising continues the progressmade in this area by the hard work ofour past Presidents and lay leadership, the incredible support of UJA Federation, the philanthropic leadership of theKimel family and Dr. Anne Tanenbaum, and, of course, the dedication of ourhard-working volunteers and the verycapable staff of our Development Office.
Through the pages of this Annual Report you willlearn more about our accomplishments during the lastschool year, and particularly, about the work done bythe Board of Directors and by our Administration. Weensured that both campuses continued to deliver thehigh-quality educational programs that our studentsdeserve and our parents expect. Simply walking downthe halls of either campus brings home the messagethat every second of toil, every ounce of effort was wellworth it.
But for me, the essence of our achievement wasdemonstrated on September 9th during the OpeningCelebration of our new Kimel Family Education Centre.Of course, there were congratulations, speeches and‘thank-you’s’. But the moment that best captured whatwe have created was at the end of the formal ceremony, when a large group of TanenbaumCHAT students cameinto the hall singing and dancing with the Torah. Inthose minutes, it was clear to all of us why we care somuch about Jewish education and why we labour toexpand and improve our facilities and our programming. Those students embodied our community’s vision for
the future and there was not a dry eye inthe house.
In building TanenbaumCHAT, a systemnow embracing over 1,500 students ontwo strategically placed campuses; wehave built a place to learn, a placeto connect with each other, a place tobe serious about Judaism, and a place tocelebrate. It is more than bricks andmortar; TanenbaumCHAT is the place torealize all of our community’s dreams. |

This year was dominated by the opening of the Kimel
Family Education Centre. When we first established our
Richmond Hill campus in the summer of 2000, few of
us dreamed that such a magnificent building lay in our
future.
The opening of the Kimel Centre was the culmination
of seven years of intense planning, including hundreds
of hours of meetings. The official Opening Celebration
on Sunday, September 9th was an opportunity to thank
the many people involved with the entire project,
including our partners at UJA; our joint architects, Guela
Solow-Ruda (Petroff Partnership) and Paul Cravit (CS&P
Architects); and especially Miguel Singer and Sheldon
Goodman, our lay representatives throughout the
process. I also want to give credit to our CFO, Rhona
Birenbaum and to Linda Newstead, our Operations
Manager at TanenbaumCHAT North Campus, who
worked hard to ensure that the building opened on time
and was properly furnished and equipped.
We opened on September 4th with over 1500
students across our two campuses – almost 900 at
TanenbaumCHAT South Campus and over 600
at TanenbaumCHAT Kimel Centre. These are record
enrolments for the school and include over 450 new
students.
During the 2006/2007 school year, our graduates
continued to excel. Among our proudest moments was
when our graduate Danny Richmond (’03) was one of
only two Canadian students chosen to accompany the
Governor General of Canada, Michaëlle Jean, on her trip
In less than a decade, we have doubled our enrolment,
doubled our staff, carried out a major program of improvement
at Wilmington (and will soon commence another),
established a new branch and built a new campus.”

to Africa. Danny earned this because of his unrelenting
personal commitment to raising funds and organizing
volunteer programs for famine relief and for the relief of
poverty in Africa. His humanitarian vision, combined
with continuing Jewish community involvement,
exemplify the best of our school values.
In January of 2007, we welcomed Lori Disenhouse as
our new President of the school and Judy Engel as Chair
of the Board. Both very quickly proved themselves as
clear leaders, navigating their way through school and
community process with great clarity and aplomb. We
thanked Alan Applebaum, our retiring President, and
presented him with a beautiful papercut by the
Jerusalem artist, Archie Granot. We shall miss Alan’s
razor sharp intellect and his feisty style.
On our near horizon is the implementation of further
major improvements to our Wilmington campus that
will allow us to provide a full music program (in parallel
to the new music facilities at Kimel); reaching out to
new Jewish communities north of Highway 7; and, in the
longer term, putting school fundraising – especially our
endowment fund – on a solid and profitable basis.
This is my tenth year at TanenbaumCHAT. In less
than a decade, we have doubled our enrolment,
doubled our staff, carried out a major program of
improvement at Wilmington (and will soon commence
another), established a new branch and built a new
campus. We have strengthened our relationship with
UJA Federation, who are a central partner in our growth.
TanenbaumCHAT truly is a place to be proud. |

This year has been unique for the students, staff
and Administration at the North Campus. While the
excitement surrounding the construction of the Kimel
Family Education Centre grew, we were also very proud
of the achievements of our staff and students in their
final year in Richmond Hill.
We received an outstandingly positive report from
our Ministry of Education inspection. Only private
schools are fully inspected and since I come from
the public system, the remarkably high standard of
accountability to which our teachers and programs
are held was a revelation to me. Our parents and
stakeholders can be proud that we earned such top
marks from the inspectors and can be confident of the
quality of education our children receive.
Our assessment and evaluation
standards were reviewed against Ministry
of Education guidelines. A professional
development session enabled teachers
to share and discuss individual goals for
marking and measuring progress.
This collaborative approach is an
example of our progress towards establishing a
Professional Learning Community (PLC) model where
our teachers and staff are encouraged to learn from
each other. In the new building, individual work areas
are being created within the staff room to encourage
more professional collaboration. This will be an exciting
way of doing business at TanenbaumCHAT and we look
forward to seeing the benefits.
It can be difficult to quantify the impact of some
of these activities. But happy teachers lead to happy
students and the TanenbaumCHAT North Campus is
a place where students have continued to excel
spiritually, academically, athletically and artistically.
As I sat at the last graduation at the ‘North Campus’
(my first as Principal), the sense of pride
at where we’ve come to was overwhelm-
ing. Although we’ve now closed the door
on the Richmond Hill Campus and
opened an exciting new one at the Kimel
Family Education Centre, it’s obvious
that the spirit of the TanenbaumCHAT
family will always remain constant. |

The success of the South Campus in the 2006 /2007
calendar year was supported by an Administrative
team that is energetic, engaged, sympathetic and
compassionate — and a staff that is resourceful,
multi-talented, knowledgeable and characterized by
determination, foresight and passion.
The South Campus team continued to build a
Professional Learning Community (PLC) that enhances
both the teaching and learning experience. Through
collegial training, all teachers are learning how to be
better educators. Greater collaboration with their peers
is helping department heads become more insightful
leaders.
Professional development workshops held over the
year provided a platform for department
heads to act as mentors for their teams.
These seminars served as the foundation
for future training as we continue along
the path towards an even stronger
teaching and learning community.
Professional development for staff also
focused on assessment and evaluation,
including reviews of formative assessment
and exit keys that ensure we can measure whether our
students are learning the lessons we are teaching. Using
the improved Edline system, more parents are going
online to stay abreast of their child’s progress.
In addition to our academic successes, we have seen
success in a long list of athletic activities, including
basketball, skiing, volleyball and track and field.
TanenbaumCHAT students are demonstrating their own
leadership capabilities in academic extra-curricular
activities, such as Reach for the Top, National Bible
Contest in Israel and the international success of DECA.
The successes we’ve experienced at the South
Campus throughout the 2006 /2007 school year
demonstrated the ripple effect caused by creating a
place built on compassion, collaboration
and communication. Looking back,
we are hopeful that the level of trust,
ingenuity and accountability that we
are encouraging in a collegial leadership
environment has empowered our staff,
and most importantly, our students. |

The Development Committee made it even easier thisyear for alumni, parents and friends of TanenbaumCHATto give back to a school that gives the community somuch. In 2 0 0 6 / 2 0 0 7 , donors were able to makedonations online by visiting www.tanenbaumchat.organd following the ‘Development’ pull-down menu. TheClass of ‘87 used the new service to highlight thefundraising component of their reunion. As a result, thatclass raised more than any other reunion held inTanenbaumCHAT history.
In addition to adopting innovative ways that makeit easier to give, the Development Committeeimplemented several campaigns designed to engagethe community and secure important funding for theschool.
The long-standing ‘Night at the Theatre’ programwas replaced with a production of ‘Bye Bye Birdie’,a collaboration between parents, alumni and staff.Twelve weeks of rehearsals resulted in two entertainingperformances of this amateur production.
The 2006/2007 TanenbaumCHAT Lottery introduceda new prizing format that resulted in strong ticket sales. In addition to a $10,000 grand prize and Cineplex early-bird prize, one of the four fabulous prize packagesincluded a trip to Israel.
The Tribute Cards campaign, which began atRosh Hashanah and continued throughout theyear, demonstrated how a simple idea can producesignificant funds for the school. The $10 card serviceraised nearly $20,000 by helping families mark impor-tant calendar and life events.
The second annual “Graduation L’Chaim” once againhighlighted the generosity of graduating families. In itsfirst two years, this program has raised over $100,000.
From the revenues generated by DevelopmentCommittee activities this year, $109,759 was allocatedto various programs and equipment purchases, including: • The Student Support Fund, which ensures that no
student is prevented from participation in any school
activity for financial reasons, and inappropriate cases, funds the provision oftextbooks and other necessary equipment
• Grants that enable TanenbaumCHATstudents to participate in out-of-townextra-curricular and sporting programs
• A T184 Calculator System (includingcalculators, two laptop computers andvideo projector) for the Math Departmentthat links students’ calculators to acentral system for teaching
• Art Department tools, including a dryingrack and wheel

Donors were also giventhe opportunity to visit the UJA Tomorrow Campaign showroom at the Lipa Green Building, where amulti-media presentation gave them a greater perspective of importance of TanenbaumCHAT as theanchor presence on the Lebovic Campus.
Donor support grew stronger as the dream turned into reality and familiar friends of both the schooland the community stepped forward to attach their names to the project. With a mandate of securinggifts not exceeding $100,000, the team’s determination resulted in over $1-million in new contributionsto the campaign.
The hard work of 2006/2007 resulted in the Kimel Family Education Centre opening its doors thispast September — both on time and on budget. The Capital Campaign Team will continue its work withrenewed excitement as they proudly look to the future in this extraordinary facility and launch theirexciting plans for significant and substantial renovation of the Wilmington South Campus. |

There were no significant health or safetyconcerns during the 2006/2007 year. The JointHealth and Safety committee met periodically, conducted inspections, identified areas ofthe school needing repair, and oversawcompletion of those repairs from a health andsafety perspective. The school had no WorkplaceSafety and Insurance Board (WSIB) claims thisyear, nor was anyone quarantined due tocommunicable disease. Fire drills were heldregularly.
The South Campus continued to addressissues of safety, security and crisis responseand preparedness. Each year, the Education Committee explores ways toensure that the TanenbaumCHAT delivery of curriculummeets the highest possible standards, and is in accordwith parent and student expectations.
To gain greater insight for determining futureprogramming, the Education Committee participated inthe design of the first TanenbaumCHAT graduate survey.Conducted online, the survey will aim to explore thefollowing areas:
• Educational outcomes • Jewish outcomes • Reflections on the TanenbaumCHAT experience • Future attendance intentions for children of alumni
The results of this comprehensive survey should bedelivered in 2007/2008 and will be invaluable when itcomes to ensuring our curriculum continues to meetthe needs of the community.
Throughout the 2006/2007 school year, theEducation Committee also investigated variousways TanenbaumCHAT could further enhance currenteducational programming. In the area of JewishStudies curriculum development, a review of the Tanakhcurriculum was conducted by Gary Levine, Director ofProfessional Services (Jewish Studies). It proposedestablishing a task force that would design andimplement a staged three-year skills and knowledge-based program, beginning with a grade 9 pilot programin 2007/2008.
In addition, the Ivrit Review that was recommendedin 2005/2006 was implemented in 2006/2007 byDr. Vardit Ringvald of Brandeis University to helpmaintain the high standards of the TanenbaumCHATIvrit program and explore long-term strategies neces-sary to meet changing needs. A preliminary report waspresented to the Education Committee, and a fullreport, including recommendations, will be presentedin 2007/2008.
In the General Studies curriculum, theschool developed a new music program thatwas launched at the Kimel Family EducationCentre at the start of the current school year.As an initial stage of this exciting new program,an instrumental music course was offeredto grade 9 and 10 students. Future stageswill include the development of a purpose-designed Music Department at the SouthCampus that will allow a similar program tobe offered there.
The Education Committee also reaffirmedthe recommendation to carry out a needsassessment for the vocational stream.Funding is still being sought.
To maintain TanenbaumCHAT’s reputationas a leader in learning, evolving technologyand tools were evaluated by the EducationCommittee — from SMART Board technologyat both campuses to T184 Calculator Systemsthat link students’ calculators to a central system forteaching math. By always looking to the future, theEducation Committee is committed to ensuring thatTanenbaumCHAT is able to deliver the highest qualityof education today. |

Over the course of the 2006-2007 school year, theCommunications and Public Relations Committeefocused its efforts on developing a comprehensivemarketing plan for the North and South Campuses.
As part of this thorough process, current advertisingand public relations activities were analyzed andevaluated to develop a more targetedapproach in all communications tovarious stakeholders. This includeddeveloping messages designed to ensurethat a younger community and anemerging Israeli and Russian populationunderstand the benefits of attendingTanenbaumCHAT, as well as engagingTanenbaumCHAT alumni in the impor-tance of providing on-going support forschool initiatives.
The plans were approved by the Boardof Directors and the upcoming year willbe dedicated to the implementation of
these exciting strategies. The Committee will work insynergy with the Development Office to explore creativeways to increase alumni awareness of TanenbaumCHATinitiatives.
Since knowledge is power, the cornerstone of theCommunications and Public Relations Committee
activities in 2006/2007 was the designand implementation of an intake surveydelivered by staff at both campusesto the parents of incoming Grade 9students. It explored the profiles offamilies registering at the school, the reasons why they chose to attendTanenbaumCHAT, and what outcomesthey sought in the education offered. The information gleaned from thiscomprehensive intake survey of parentswill be invaluable in terms of identifyinghow to expand the market for bothcampuses. |
