Nufarm product news

This spring, Nufarm Agriculture Inc. is unveiling a specialized burndown

treatment, developed to provide superiorpre-seeding weed control in crops such aspulses and canola.

CleanStart™herbicide combinesglyphosate with carfentrazone – a newGroup 14 herbicide.

According toNufarm MarketingManager, BrentZacharias,“CleanStart is the firstburndown treatment designed specifically fora farmer’s most valuable, and vulnerablecrops: pulses and canola. And there are nocropping restrictions which is a big plus forpulse and canola growers.”

CleanStart provides added control oftough weeds that can escape a glyphosateburndown. This includes kochia, winter annuals, mustards, spring germinatingdandelion and especiallyglyphosate tolerant canola volunteers.

“Extensive testing has shownthat CleanStart gives you significantly higher control of acertain spectrum of weeds compared to glyphosate alone. These weeds often escape aglyphosate burndown and cancome back to haunt you inpulse and canola crops wherethere are limited in-crop herbicideoptions,” Zacharias adds.

A solution for volunteer canola.Because CleanStart contains carfentrazone,

it eliminates all types of volunteer canola. Thisincludes Roundup Ready®, Clearfield® and

LibertyLink® varieties.“With the wide spread use of

Roundup Ready canola varieties,CleanStart gives farmers a longoverdue burndown solution forglyphosate tolerant volunteer canolawhen seeding broadleaf crops,”Nufarm’s Marketing Managerexplains.

No residual. No croppingrestrictions.

CleanStart does not leave a residual and does not have any cropping restrictions. This will provide farmers with a great deal of leeway and flexibility in future rotations.

Nufarm introduces CleanStart™: an advanced newburndown technology for high value crops.

Nufarmer Special Edition:

Profile on Assert® wild oat herbicide

Better safe than sorry.

For years, Nufarm has been known for providing fully-serviced, dependable herbicideproducts at an affordable price – without thehassle of programs.

“So,” customers would frequently ask, “whydoesn’t Nufarm offer a wild oat product?”

Last season, Nufarm took the industry by surprise when it announced the company would be marketing the Assert® wild oat herbicide brand.

In this edition of Nufarmer, we have decidedto profile Assert for those of you who may

not be familiar with this product, which hasbeen around for nearly 20 years.

Duane Briand of Parkland Fertilizer inWetaskawin, Alberta managed to sum it upquite well.

“Growers like to use Assert because oftank mix flexibility; because it does a goodjob; because it can be used on both barleyand wheat; because it’s safe on the crop;and because it’s a group 2, which givesthem that rotational aspect.”

In addition, Briand notes that in a market-place where the cost of wild oat herbicides typically rises by one to four percent annually,Nufarm actually lowered the price on Assertin 2006 – which was a welcome change.

So with that, a look at the tried and truewild oat herbicide now under the new man-agement of Nufarm – as told by the growersusing it in the front lines!

Nufarm 4Nufarm 4

Assert’s hallmark remains crop safety in barley.“Assert shines in barley,” Parkland Fertilizer’s Duane Briand

says with a smile.Since it was first introduced, the claim to fame for Assert wild

oat herbicide has always been that it is arguably the safest wild oatproduct for barley.

“Barley is one of those more sensitive crops that can be injured by herbicides,” explains Kim Bedard, Nufarm’s Marketing and RegulatoryCoordinator.

“Whether it is a wild oat herbicide or a broadleaf product, youhave to be careful which products and which active ingredients youuse in a barley crop,” she adds.

Assert is a Group 2 product with imazamethabenz as its active ingredient. It is proven to be among the safest and most effective herbicides for eliminating wild oats without damaging barley.

Herbicide damage can result in yellowing on the stalks and theheads. It affects the stand at harvest and can impact the marketability. That is why growers such as the Reszel family of St. Paul, Albertahave been coming back to Assert on a regular basis.

Lance Reszel says he can’t remember a year they didn’t use Assertsince he joined his dad on the farm 11 years ago.

“Assert is very gentle on the crop. Even at the heavy rate (16 acresper jug) Assert doesn’t show. We keep sticking with Assert because itworks so well.”

Brent McGlynn also uses the 16 acre per jug rate. One thing hehas noticed is that Assert will not set back the barley even when it isdry.

Crop safety is one thing, but the fact Assert® can be appliedbetween the1to 6-leaf stage of the wild oats (up to the 6 -leaf stageof the barley) is truly impressive.

And if Assert is safe enough for barley, you know you can count onit in wheat!

Rating the rates.Evaluating Assert’s 16-acre rate vs. 20-acre rate. When the label gives you the option of going with one of two rates, how do you know which one is right for you? Assert® wild oat herbicide is registered at a 20 acre/jug rate and a 16 acre per jug rate. So we asked customers what rates worked best for them.

Assert®

Name: Gary Richards Uses Assert on: Barley (50/50 Malt/Feed)

Like most farmers, Gary Richards is pragmaticwith his herbicide choices. The Olds, Alberta farmeris religious when it comes to spraying for wild oatson approximately 1,110 acres of barley.

Wherever he feels weed pressure is low, he willgo with Assert at the 20-acre/jug rate. He admitsthat in the past he tried to cut corners and sprayeverything at the 20 acre/jug rate, and was lessthan satisfied with the control in certain fields.“I said this is just foolish. Once we started using

the higher rate we were far happier with the results.”On heavier infestations, Richards says it is worth it for an extra buck

or two per acre to go with the higher rate.

Names: Leonard andBrent McGlynnUse Assert on: 2-Row Barley

Brothers Leonard and BrentMcGlynn run a commercial cattleoperation and farm in SouthWestern Alberta between PincherCreek and Waterton. It is a challenging area because they are in the shadow of the Rocky

Mountains, with no foothills to provide a buffer between them and theunpredictable mountain air. They never know when they will be ablespray their 1,600 acres.

As long-time Assert users, the McGlynns have experimented withboth rates.

“I tried the 20-acre rate 10 years ago and found I did not get allthe wild oats,” Brent recalls. “I did some reading and found out that ifyou go with the 16-acre rate you’ll get better results.”

According to Leonard, the 16-acre rate is extremely effective longinto the season. “We very seldom get a second flush.”

Name: Grant Durie Uses Assert on: Barley As someone who has taught farm economics

at Lakeland College and worked professionallyas an agricultural finance consultant, GrantDurie knows the importance of weighing inputcosts versus output potentials.

Durie notes that wild oats are a real problemin no-till farming. He’s been using Assert fornearly ten years now on his farm. Wherever itmakes sense (and “cents”), he tries to use the20-acre rate. But he finds the 16-acre ratecomes in handy.“In our area of the world, when it rains you can

really get behind. The nice thing about Assert is that if I am behind Ican go with the high end rate and I get what I need in terms of weedcontrol.”

Durie explains that saving money is important, but in the end he appreciates the convenience Assert’s two-rate option gives him.

“It works well. And if something works I stick with it.”Whatever rate you decide will work best for your particular situation,

we leave you with an important piece of advice courtesy of RobertReszel, who farms with his boys Kyle and Lance in St. Paul:

“It takes years to clean up a field with wild oats. But you’ve got tokeep on top of it. If you let it go one year the wild oats will comeback. That is why Assert is part of our program every year.”

Nice mix.Tank mix options give farmers flexibility.

Nufarmer spoke to numerous farmers to find out how theyare using Assert. One of the things that caught our attention

was the wide variety of tank mix partners they were using it with. The ability to combine Assert with several of the most common

broadleaf herbicides gives you incredible flexibility.

Assert’s tank mix range allows you to:

• Choose the broadleaf herbicide that’s right for your weed spectrum,• Switch between a number of herbicide groups to prevent resistance,• Choose the broadleaf partner that fits your budget or brand

preference.

Approved tank mix partners with Assert:

Wonderful in wheat. Why Assert is not just for barley!

The majority of growers consider Assert to be a wild oat solutionfor barley. Yet, did you know wheat crops can also benefit fromAssert’s extended application window, reputation for crop safety andability to control second flushes of wild oats?

David Gabrysh farms close to 2,500acres near Vegreville, Alberta with his sonCurtis. As someone who grows wheat andbarley, he likes the idea of using the samewild oat herbicide on both.

“With Assert we can go from wheat to barley without washing our sprayer,” hebeams. Typically, Gabrysh will mix Assertwith MCPA ester and Frontline®.

He’s been quite happy with the results inboth crops. He only wishes that he coulduse Assert all the time... especially giventhe affordable price.

Assert Tip:Keep detailed application records.

Bill Toone is a big Assert supporter. The Claresholm, Alberta farmerhas been using it to control wild oats on his 2,000 acres of cropland along Alberta’s Highway 2 Corridor. With 65 to 75 cattle and asow operation, he seeds about half ofhis land for feed barley. He alsogrows a fair amount of wheat andcanola.

“The reason I went to Assert isbecause it is the most affordable formof wild oat control,” Toone reveals.

Because Toone also grows fieldpeas and mustard, he warns you haveto keep good records when usingAssert. In the brown and dark brownsoil zones peas, canola and flax cannot be seeded the year after anapplication of Assert. It’s a simplestep, but it can definitely save youpotential problems in the long run.

Trophy®

Nufarm 8

Volunteering a solution. When flax becomes a volunteer, retailers recommend Trophy®.

Grown as a crop, flax is considered to be delicate and fragile. So you treat it well. Pamper it. And, how does it repay you

the following year? It transforms from delicate to difficult – proving to be a stubborn thorn in your side as a volunteer weed.

“There aren’t many products that are good on volunteer flax,”acknowledges Dan Debacker, a Customer ServiceRepresentative at Agricore United in Deloraine, Manitoba.

One post-emergent product western farmers and retailersare finding to be quite effective is Trophy® broadleaf herbicide. Known primarily for its cleaver and kochia control, Trophy is quickly becoming regarded as the herbicide of choice for volunteer flax.

Terry Jackson of Jackson Seeds in Inglis, Manitoba stresses that volunteer flax can really affect crop competition. It is also a nightmare at harvest time, causing a real mess. She has found a savior in Trophy.

“It whacks (volunteer) flax right off the bat!” Jackson exclaims.Jackson recently recommended Trophy to customer Fred Dunn.

Following a flax rotation, Dunn found volunteer flax was overstayingits welcome in the field he had sown to wheat.

“This is the first time I used it,” Dunn says, noting he was also targeting hempnettle.

“It did a superb job. The only weeds I had left were the spotswhere I missed. It was quite evident that Trophy worked.”

The results were no surprise to Terry Jackson.

“We thought Trophy would probably do the best job on his volunteerflax. It was also an economical choice for his weeds. It covers abroad spectrum of broadleaves as well. In our area the worst weedsare cleavers, chickweed and hempnettle.”

Trophy is also known for its wide application window, due to thefluroxypyr/MCPA formula. It can be safely sprayedbetween the 3-leaf to flag-leaf stage in wheat and bar-ley. According to retailer Dan Debacker, it is somethinghis customers take advantage of, without having to worry about crop damage.

“Some guys like to go in and spray a little bit earlier.Trophy is a better fit than the 2,4-D products.”

Retailers Debacker and Jackson both like the factTrophy can be tank mixed with such a wide range ofgrassy herbicides. Jackson notes Fred Dunn mixed it with

Nufarm’s Assert® for excellent results, while Debacker says many of hiscustomers are getting great control with a Trophy/Axial® tank mix.

On behalf of all readers dealing with troublesome flax in cereal crops, we thank Debacker and Jackson for “volunteering” such useful information.

Hockey playoffs are just around the corner. So what bettertime to compare Nufarm’s Trophy® broadleaf herbicidewith hockey’s most coveted award...

The Stanley Cup has been hoisted by Gerry Cheevers.Trophy® is hoisted by farmers to control Scary Cleavers(not to mention kochia, hempnettle and volunteer flax.)The Stanley Cup is one of the OLDEST trophies in NorthAmerican professional sports.Trophy® is NEWLY registered to tank mix with Axial®.The Stanley Cup is DELICATE (and carried around by a dudein white gloves).

Trophy® is DELICATE on crops that need to be handled withcare such as barley and wheat (far safer on a crop than 2,4-D-based products). The Stanley Cup season runs for three months in the spring.Trophy®’s season runs between the 3 to flag-leaf stage of thecrop! (Both are incredibly long.)

“It whacks(volunteer)flax right

off the bat.”

Mextrol®Learning from ourmistakes. The affordable

control of Mextrol® 450.Jean Dargis likes a good laugh. The St. Paul, Alberta

farmer is always quick to joke or chuckle... even if it’s at hisown expense.

In 2002, he decided to try his hand at growing corn for the firsttime. In his own words, it was a disaster. Dargis had the misfortuneto pick a drought year. Never one to be hung up on the past, hesmiles about the experience today.

“We grew more buckwheat than corn,” he laughs. “The groundwas just littered with buckwheat. We had to get rid of it.”

They say you should always try to find the positives in the negatives. While Dargis is not keen to grow corn again, on thebright side he did discover an economical solution to eliminate tough buckwheat from the cereal crop following his nightmare with corn.

Mextrol® 450 from Nufarm.Mextrol’s dual action formula of bromoxynil and MCPA has long

been known to offer superior control of wild buckwheat (these arethe same ingredients found in Buctril® M).

Asked if it worked for him, Dargis smiles incredulously.“All the chemicals I use work. Otherwise I wouldn’t use them.”Mextrol has been an important part of his herbicide strategy ever

since. In addition to wild buckwheat, he trusts Mextrol to zap whathe calls “everyday weeds” such as lambsquarters and stinkweed.

Dean Boyd will vouch for Mextrol’s performance. The soft-spokenBoissevain, Manitoba grain, oilseed and hog farmer uses Mextrol in-crop as part of his direct seeding herbicide strategy in flax. Herecalls one field where the wild buckwheat was well beyond typicalinfestation levels.

“The buckwheat population was significant. But the weed controlwe got from Mextrol was really good,” Boyd explains.

The reason farmers such as Dean Boyd and Jean Dargis are trying Mextrol 450 broadleaf herbicide – and sticking with it – is its consistently strong performance and all-round value compared to other similar products.

“We usually look at the bottom line. If the dollar value is there,we’ll give it a try. With Mextrol there is a cost advantage over otherproducts,” notes Boyd.

And if you can get something that performs as well as anotherproduct for less money, you don’t want to make the mistake of paying too much too many times before you learn your lesson.

Credit®Price. Backing.Performance. Programming becoming less a factor in glyphosate choice.

Nufarm 10

“I find glyphosate is glyphosate. They all seem to do the same thing.”That’s the frank assessment of Sales Agronomist Brian Elliot of

Redferns in Brandon. While some specialty glyphosates do indeed have certain premium

selling points (such as registration on glyphosate-tolerant crops andquicker rainfastness) the majority of glyphosate used is still the standardformula farmers have been relying on for years.

Not only that, there are a lot more products and brand names tochoose from today... and far more lower-priced products that offer comparable performance.

Over the last few seasons, Elliot has noticed new trends are influencing his customers’ purchasing decisions.

“There has been a move to get away from programs. I see a trendnow where guys base purchases on the product that will give the bestbang for their buck.”

Elliot feels this is the result of the cashflow squeeze facing farmers.Growers don’t want to spend money upfront only to wait around for sixmonth to get a rebate. Customers have told Elliot they could use themoney NOW.

Plus, skyrocketing fuel costs are influencing farmers to find other ways to save money to make up for the difference.

As a result, the Brandon-based agronomist finds he is recommendingNufarm’s Credit ® glyphosate more and more these days.

Elliot feels Credit stacks up against any other glyphosate in the field, yet in terms of “bang for the buck” he says Credit has three advantages:

1. Credit has no programs, just a competitive up-front retail price.

2. Credit is fully backed and supported by Nufarm.

3. Credit consistently delivers dependable control.“I usually advise customers to go with the product that offers value for

the dollar and is supported by the manufacturer. Customers find comfortin knowing there is some kind of backing.”

According to Elliot, farmers are now asking for Credit by name. It isbeing used in a variety of burnoff situations, including pre-seeding, pre-emergent, pre-harvest and post-harvest. Plus, being rainfast within 1hour is adequate for the majority of farmers who tend to be cautious bynature.

“We’ve had excellent control every time,” Elliot says firmly. This spring, when shopping around for glyphosate, ask which products

are backed and which are not. Inquire which products give you thebest price today and which ones require you to pay more at the counterand wait around for a rebate cheque.

If you follow these steps in considering glyphosate, or any other herbicide for that matter, agronomist Brian Elliot is confident you’ll beonto a more efficient way to farm.

Urban jungle.Urban Manitobans changing attitudes toward herbicides.

For the past five years, Nufarmer has been speaking one-on-one with growers to find out how various Nufarm products perform on the farm. Yet, most readers are probably

unaware that Nufarm also markets premium lawn care products. We caught up with Frank Roberts of EcoGreen in Brandon,

Manitoba. The company was established 23 years ago, and is nowin all major urban centres in Manitoba. Today, EcoGreen providesresidential and commercial lawncare (herbicide and fertilizer) and tree maintenance.

Frank shares insights on the changing nature of urban herbicide application and histhoughts on Nufarm’s Trillium®

herbicide: a fast growing three-way lawn care product containing 2,4-D, MCPA anddichloroprop.

11

Frank Roberts

Trillium™

Nufarmer: How has the urban market for herbicidechanged over the years?

Roberts: It has been on a steady increase for the past 15 to 20 years.

Over the past 10 years we have seen a lot ofchanges. People’s homes have become their primary residence. They’re looking for that cottage feeling in their backyard. They want it tolook the very best with the least amount of griefon their part.

And as the population ages, maintenance companies will be in greater demand.

Nufarmer: How have you adapted?

Roberts: We decided to promote environmentally friendlier products wherever possible. We’realways looking for products that are better forthe environment.

Nufarmer: What led you to try Trillium®?

Roberts: As of this year, we switched over to Trilliumbecause we heard of the great results peoplewere getting. I was also attracted by the economical price.

Nufarmer: How is the weed control with Trillium?

Roberts: It works very well on the total broadleaf weedspectrum. There are very few weeds we encounterin an urban environment that Trillium won’t takecare of: even tough to control weeds such as dandelions, plantain and thistle.

Nufarmer: What impressed you most about Trillium?

Roberts: We were extremely pleased that Trillium wasvery low odor. In fact, it had considerably lessodor than Par III®, which we had been previously using.

Nufarmer: Is odor an important factor with urban customers?

Roberts: Over the years, there has been a minority of people spreading misconceptions that pesticidesare bad for us. As soon as they smell product inthe air they think they are being poisoned. Goingto a low odor product has alleviated some ofthese concerns.

Nufarmer: What role do lawn care professionals play inchanging perceptions?

Roberts: Customer education is key to our success.Thebig thing is to follow instructions on the label.
