Guyra Lamb & Potato Festival 2018 - 3
The first Lamb and Potato Festival washeld in January 1987 in Rotary Park onthe New England Highway.
Event organisers hoped to catch theeye of passing traffic, particularly travellers on their way to and from the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Over the years this has proved a verysuccessful tactic and Guyra is now a“must stop” for people as they maketheir way to and from the Country Musiccapital.
Rotary Park is an ideal location for suchan event with plenty of shade provided bythe established trees which stretch formore than a kilometre along the highway. The park also has a purpose built kitchen,an amenities block, children’s playgroundand plenty of available parking.
The Lamb and Potato Festival has continued to promote Guyra for around12 days each January taking in the Australia Day weekend, including the flag
raising ceremony and other activities.
What started out as a simple idea topromote two of Guyra’s most recognizedexports has expanded and grown overthe years to encompass a much widerrange of local products.
While the idea to run it at the sametime as the Tamworth Country MusicFestival has helped it along, it is now adestination in its own right rather thanjust a stop off.
Bus loads arrive for a day out in themild summer climate that the town enjoys. Families make the journey to givethe kids a day out during the long schoolholiday break. People can enjoy livemusic performances without the heat andthe crowds.
They are all able to wander at theirleisure to check out the stalls and enjoya tasty meal of lamb and spuds served upby the hard working locals who work together to make the Festival a success.

It was perhaps the darkest day inthe history of the Lamb and PotatoFestival, but also the day that thetrue spirit of the Guyra communityshone through.
On January 20th, 2017, a suddenstorm tore through the Festival sitecausing havoc.
The storm hit Guyra at around4pm with heavy rain and strongwinds, causing considerable damageto the stalls and marquees.
The maximum wind gust recordedat the South Guyra weather stationwas 121 km per hour at 4.24pm.
That was the moment that the
music marquee lifted off the groundand landed on top of the lambstatue.
Inside at the time was the Festival’s music coordinator Ian Russell, who was seriously injuredand to this day has no memory ofwhat happened.
What he does know is thatemergency services rushed to hisaid and saved his life.
In a show of true communityspirit, a stream of helpers alsorushed to the aid of the FestivalCommittee.
Within 18 hours, what had been ascene of devastation was once againa bustling Festival site.
President of the Lamb and Potato Festival committee SteveMepham said that the communitysupport was overwhelming.
"We are indebted to the emergency services who came outin the bad weather and also otherswho just rocked up and said 'whatcan we do?," he said.
"We didn't have to ask they justgot in and did the job."
