Spreading compost,adding soil amendments,

and planting garlic nowfor harvest next July aresome of the gardening ac-tivities for this month.

As you empty annualbeds this fall, there are

two main ways to enrichthe soil for next year:spreading compost orplanting cover crops. While this month is a bitlate to sow cover crops, you can apply compost. Before you spread com-post, dig or lightly till inany plants that aren’t dis-eased to return nutrientsto the soil. Spread com-post, even if it’s not welldecomposed yet. It willprotect the soil over thewinter and break down byspring planting time.

If you need to raise orlower the pH (soil acidity)of your soil, add the re-

quired amendments, such as sulfur (to lowerpH) or lime (to raise pH),this fall because they takesome time to work. This isimportant to test everyfew years, or particularlyif you’re preparing a newsite, as without the prop-er pH nutrients won’t beavailable to plants.

Take soil samples fromdifferent parts of youryard and garden and testthem separately so youcan apply what’s neededfor each particular use.Extension test kits areavailable from local of-fices and some garden

stores. Simple home testkits are available at somegarden stores, but theyare much less accuratethan those from stateuniversity labs, especiallyif they’re old.

Plant garlic now forharvesting next summer.Purchase garlic soldspecifically for planting,or buy organic garlic.Commercial, nonorganic, supermarket garlic mayhave been treated to in-hibit sprouting. Breakthe garlic head into indi-vidual cloves, keeping thelargest ones for planting.(Use the small cloves forcooking.) Plant cloveswith the pointed side upabout 3 inches apart inrows, with rows about 6inches apart, Try somedifferent varieties to seewhich you prefer. Mulchthe bed well with straw.

Keep leaves raked fromlawns so they don’tsmother the grass. Mowuntil the grass stopsgrowing, often early to themiddle of the month. Withthe last mowing you canmow a bit lower if you’ve

been mowing higher as isproper — 2 to 3 inches in-stead of 3 to 4 inches. This helps prevent grassfrom ending up too tall inthe spring, susceptible todisease such as snowmold. Spread a thin top-ping of compost on thelawn after you rake upleaves, and rake again tosettle the compost.

Buy some bulbs for“forcing” — potting up tohave bloom indoors latewinter or spring. All youneed to force bulbs in-doors is a place that stayscool but above freezing(32 to 50 degrees). A coolgarage, cellar, or sparerefrigerator works well.Pot up daffodils, tulips, hyacinths, grape hy-acinths, and other springbulbs that need such acold treatment, and waterthem well. Then place thepots in cool storage forabout 12 to 16 weeks be-fore bringing back intowarmth. Check on themperiodically and waterwhen the soil is dry.

Rudbeckia, sedums, ornamental grasses, andother perennials withlong-lasting seedheadswill feed the birds if youleave the plants standingat least until later in fall,if not spring. They alsoare beautiful under alight blanket of snow.

Brussels sprouts, re-sembling little “cab-bages”, will continue toripen and sweetenthrough the cold snaps soharvest whenever you’reready to eat them. If someof the sprouts get frozenalmost solid, cook themright away or pop them inthe freezer.

Don’t forget to buysome pumpkins at farmstands for painting, carv-ing and pies.

by Sam MazzottaStorm-proofinganxious pets

Dear Paw’s corner:Both my dogs and my catare terrified by thunder-storms, and they run, hide under furniture, andhowl and yowl until thestorm passes. How can Istop this behavior? —Frustrated in Fort Myers

Dear Frustrated: Fearand anxiety duringstorms is a very commonissue among dogs andcats, and not one thatcan be easily or fully re-solved. However, thereare steps you can take toease their fear.

Keep an eye on weather

forecasts: note if a stormis forecast, and what timeit’s likely to reach yourarea.

About 30 minutes to anhour before a stormstrikes (or as soon aspossible ahead of thestorm), place your pets ina designated “safe room”— one that has their bed-ding, toys, water and nolarge furniture. If possi-ble, it shouldn’t have awindow; if it does, put upheavy curtains to blockthe light from lightningflashes, and add weatherstripping to reduce rat-tling. (A closet or bath-room may work, too.)

For the first few

storms, sit in the roomwith them. Be very calm, and speak in a calmvoice. Cuddle with yourpets, feed them a fewtreats if they don’t whine, and if they show interestin their toys, play with

them.Once they’re less fear-

ful using the safe room, reduce the time youspend with them duringstorms. Give them a treatwhen the storm is over.

Don’t treat storm-relat-

ed anxiety as a discipli-nary issue. It’s an issueof your pets needing tofeel secure from externalthreats. If the methodabove doesn’t lessen the

issue, speak to their vet-erinarian about otherways to ease their anxi-ety.

• When you think ofdangerous occupations, the jobs that immediatelycome to mind are proba-bly firefighter and policeofficer. You might be sur-prised to learn, then, thatin New York City, the fa-tality rate for garbage col-lectors is twice as high asit is for members of theNYPD.

Autumn is a time to en-joy beautiful foliage, takein a football game, carvea jack-o-lantern — and ofcourse, take a trip to your

favorite apple orchard.Generally speaking, ap-

ples haven’t changed toomuch over the years, butthe tools we use to pre-

pare these delicious fallfruits for pies and apple-sauce sure have.

The whatchamacallitpictured in the top rightphoto is an old-fashionedapple corer, and the pho-to on the bottom right isan apple peeler from yes-teryear.

The user pushes thelong end of the corer intothe apple’s center, whichremoves the core, seedsand all.

To peel apples usingthis old-fashioned peeler, users would push thefruit

onto the instrument’sthree prongs, and thenturn the handle, whichoperated the peeling

mechanism.
