I have great pleasure in presenting the Prospectus for this year’s BABSHarmony College. As you read it, you will realise why I am so excited bythis year’s event, and why I believe it is shaping up to be the bestHarmony College ever.

Alan Goldsmith and his team have worked tirelessly to organise an eventthat appeals to everyone. Whether you are brand new to barbershop ora veteran BABS member, there is something for you at this year’s College.

If you have never been to Harmony College before, then this year is theperfect year to come along and see what you have been missing out on.Likewise, if you have been before but haven’t come in a few years, thisyear is the perfect year to come along and see what’s changed! Either way,I can guarantee you a warm welcome and a fantastic, memorable weekend.

There are seven streams on offer this year, and you will find out more aboutthem on the following pages. These streams are supplemented bybreak-out sessions which bring variety to the weekend. I am particularlypleased to see the Youth Chorus stream on offer, and if you know me,you will know why I am so pleased! I am sure the youngsters will bringmuch excitement to the weekend, and by making it a one-day stream, it isvery affordable for young people to take part.

Our expert faculty from BABS and LABBS are augmented by the biggestever team of guest educators from the USA. Jonny Moroni, Justin Miller,David Wright and Vocal Spectrum are counted by most barbershopsingers as heroes, and bring with them a legendary amount of knowledgeand experience. I know they will make the weekend extra special.

Harmony College is counted as the best weekend in the calendar by somany barbershop singers, and for an event run entirely by volunteers tobe celebrating its 40th year is an amazing achievement. I can’t wait tosee you there to celebrate with us and see what it’s all about!

overnight accommodation for Friday and Saturday. Thosewishing to stay on Thursday evening will need to pay forthis separately. Travel and personal expenses not included.

Stream Leader: The Emerald GuardMany students get their biggest thrill at Harmony College by experiencing the big chorus sound. However, the College Chorus is more than that. Learn about craft, presentation, delivery and vocal techniques, using some of the best coaches around.

If you want to improve vocal craft and presentationskills whilst singing as part of a large chorus, then theChorus Stream is the right choice for you. Althoughthe arrangements are all in the male vocal range, thestream is open to both men and women, You will improve your ability to contribute to your ownchorus performances with coaching in vocal techniqueand other essential skills, such as understanding themusic, visual communication and responding to thedirector.You will experience a wide range of rehearsal ideasusing the Chorus songs. A typical day will include sessions working as a chorus with coaches improvingthe songs, interspersed with time off the risers, learningother skills. The chorus performance on the SaturdayNight Show is always the focal point for the weekend.It is very important for Chorus Stream students tolearn the words and notes of the College songs beforethe weekend. If you do not know the chorus songs,you are stopping yourself from getting the most fromthe weekend and holding back the other members ofthe chorus.

The stream is taught by the members of TheEmerald Guard, who bring along their unique blendof enthusiasm to the chorus stream! They each bring their individual area of expertise toteach the skills which are most important to a bar-bershop chorus member. The Emerald Guard will beworking hard to build a team at the same time, toensure everyone goes away feeling part of a biggerchorus. The chorus will also receive additional inputfrom the visiting educators during the weekend.Previous students have remarked on the wonderfulfeeling of camaraderie and fellowship which developsin the chorus over the weekend. The course is idealfor beginners and more experienced singers alike.The chorus songs for this year will be "Do You ReallyLove Me?” and “Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah”

The chorus director has a vital role to play in helpingdevelop the skills of our chorus singers. The rolegoes so much further than just waving arms aroundin time to the music. Do you have what it takes to get involved in a more‘up front’ role. Whether you are a front line director,assistant or aspiring director, music team leader, section leader or coach, you have an important partto play, and this stream will help you understandwhat it takes to stand in front of any chorus and bringthe whole ensemble together as one.

New for this Year!For the first time, the directing stream will be splitinto two separate days, to give you the opportunityto also get involved in the Personal DevelopmentStream if you wish.Day 1 will be focusing on ‘arm waving’ with personalone to one coaching on your own directing style. Ifyou want to develop your skills then this is for you.Day 2 will include more advanced learning to helpyou develop your leadership and other ‘behind thescenes’ skills.

By the end of the weekend you will have a muchgreater understanding of these key areas:

* Understanding how ‘what you do’ makes them do what they do.

* The importance of ‘awakening the voice’ and why preparing the chorus to sing is key to a successful rehearsal or performance.

* What constitutes a properly planned rehearsal - why is this so important.

* The role of the section leader - what they 'really' should be doing.

* Positive communication, leadership and motivation - how do we inspire our members to want to turn up to rehearsals each week and learn from us.

* How to analyse and plan before the sheet music reachesthe chorus.

Once again there will be a Directors' Chorus with aspecial song for the stream. All students on thestream are required to learn their part to the songin advance. Download instructions for the music andteach tracks will be sent to you when you enrol.

Designed to provide focussed coaching to quartets, whether established or novice,male, female or mixed, and whether they compete or not. It will cover manyaspects that will help to become a better quartet.

Coaching will be tailored to the quartet's needs andwill cover many aspects that will help you be a betterquartet. You will be coached in a pod of two or threequartets with an equal number of dedicated specialistcoaches.Whatever the standard of your quartet, it will be witha coaching team who will best be able to help youto improve.Activities will be structured around a quartet's specificneeds, which will be discussed in the first session ifthey are not stated on the College Enrolment Form.The stream will offer up to eleven hours of hands-oncoaching and four hours of related break-out orcommunal quartet-related activity. Aims of the Stream:* To support and encourage a quartet's improvement.* To evaluate significant strengths and perceived weaknesses, build

on the strengths and reduce the weaknesses.* To provide an opportunity for the quartet to experience rehearsal

methods that will enhance improvement.

* To allow the quartet to experience a selected range of coaches.* To provide an opportunity for the quartets to share ideas and

experience on selected issues with experienced quartet people and coaches.

* Above all, to get better and to have fun!What you will learn:* To understand the quartet’s strengths and weaknesses.* To improve by experiencing a range of coaching that improves

technique and performance* To understand the reasoning behind any changes recommended

The Extreme Quartet Stream is about having a highlevel barbershop quartet experience with other like-minded quartet singers in multiple combinations.You are provided with the sheet music and learningtracks for six high-quality songs and are required tolearn your voice part in all six songs to a performancestandard by the time you arrive. The weekend isthen yours to sing, sing and sing some more, beforea contest on Saturday afternoon to find out the best Extreme Quartet for 2018! On top of this, you’ll get to take part in the other Harmony College activities such as the break-outsessions and afterglows.This year the six chosen songs are: ‘Almost LikeBeing In Love’, ‘I Wanna Be Around’, ‘MoonlightBrings Memories’, ‘Please Don’t Talk About MeWhen I’m Gone’, ‘Swing Low/Chariot Medley’ &‘Where The Southern Roses Grow’.The stream is scheduled to run over the wholeweekend of Harmony College, starting with checkingin on Thursday evening/Friday morning.

You will be provided with practice rooms to use forgroup and quartet activity. The checking-in process

In order to make the experience as enjoyable aspossible for all participants you will be required todemonstrate your preparedness to a member of theEQ Checking Team. You will be given a card onarrival with a random selection of two of the sixsongs, which you will sing to one of the CheckingTeam in a quartet which you have recruited. If youfail to show the minimum standard required, youwill be advised to change to the Personal DevelopmentStream for the weekend. This process will take place on Thursday eveningand Friday morning, therefore a Thursday eveningbooking is recommended. During this process allsingers will be expected to assist each other bysinging in as many quartets as needed until everyonehas been rated, so there will be plenty of singing invarious quartets. Fun or what!

This stream takes quartet singing to another level. Not only in learning all thesongs, but being able to sing them in different quartets. An extremely enjoyable,but challenging experience.

This stream is designed to provide a variety of short courses, covering variousaspects of personal development. Ideal for those who wants to extend theirknowledge of barbershop and develop their skills as a singer.

Once again the Personal Development stream isback at the College. This year, education will beprovided by the wonderful David Wright, togetherwith members of Vocal Spectrum. And, of course,they will be supported by our own educators.The stream will offer a series of short sessions eachday, covering a variety of topics. Feel free to join inthe ones which interest you - no need to book. Courses on offer will include Music, Arranging,Coaching, Performance and Vocal Skills.A detailed timetable for the weekend will be availableprior to the College to enable you to select thecourses which meet your needs.This stream is ideal for anyone who wants to extendtheir knowledge of barbershop singing and developtheir skills as a singer.

The Youth Chorus is re-introduced as part of this year’s college programme andis being held on Saturday 25th only; other options are available on the Friday ifyou want to make a longer stay at Harmony College.

The Youth Chorus is for male singers aged 26 andunder as at the time of the College. The stream will be led by Simon Arnott, director ofthe award-winning Meantime Chorus and LondonCity Singers, and the BABS 2015 Youth QuartetChampions, ‘Trailblazers’. In addition to coaching from the members ofTrailblazers, there will be sessions with members ofVocal Spectrum, the 2006 Barbershop HarmonySociety’s International Quartet champions.If you are interested in joining, select this streamfrom the options on the booking form. There is areduced Youth rate, starting at just £45 for one day.Other options are shown on page 5. On registering you will be sent a link to the musicand teach track for your voice part, which youshould learn before arriving at Harmony College, asif you do not know the song you are stopping your-self from getting the most from the experience andholding back the other members of the chorus.

It is very important for the students to learnthe words and notes of the song beforeattending the Youth Stream.

Audition Chorus Stream

Aimed at experienced barbershop singers who want to work at a high level for theweekend, under the leadership of an international guest director. Entry to thisstream will require the completion of an audition recording.

The Audition Chorus Stream is again part of thisyear’s college programme, but with the addedattraction of having two separate choruses.

Guest Directors: Justin Miller & Jonny Moroni

The Audition Chorus stream is aimed at experiencedsingers looking to take their personal and collectiveperformances to a new level. This year it will beunder the direction of Justin Miller (WestminsterChorus) & Jonny Moroni (Ambassadors of Harmony).They will be assisted by Tony Chapman and othermembers of the faculty.The chosen songs this year are:Chorus 1: 'That Ever I Saw' and 'Cruella De Vil'Chorus 2: 'Show Me Where The Good Times Are'and 'Their Hearts Were Full of Spring'It is very important for Chorus Stream students tolearn the words and notes of the College songsbefore the weekend. If you do not know the chorussongs, you are stopping yourself from getting themost from the weekend and holding back the othermembers of the chorus.

Entry to the chorus stream will be by audition onlyand limited in numbers to 60 singers per chorus. Unfortunately the demand for this stream hasexceeded expectations and we have already receivedthe maximum number of successful auditions forthis stream. If you would still like to apply, please contact auditionchorus@singbarbershop.com fordetails of how to be placed on to the waiting list. For those who have successfully passed their audition,please ensure you register for the College by thedeadline of 30th April to avoid losing your place onthe stream.
