All are Welcome!
Talk given to the congregaon on the first night of Rosh Hashanah
Another year has gone by… here we are at 5778!
Wow, where did the me go. It seems like just yesterday it was 4863.
It’s so good to be here with you again.
Baruch atah Adonai, elohainu melech ha olam…
Praise to you, our G-d, Sovereign of the Universe…
You know that we Jews have a blessing for everything.
There’s that famous exchange in Fiddler on the Roof:
Peasant: Rabbi, is there even a blessing for the Czar?
Rabbi: Of course - May G-d bless and keep the Czar…
far away from us!
Over the past year, since I last stood before you I’ve had a lot to think and
pray about. I’ve been working on a few, new blessings of my own. I’ve found
the exercise to be very meaningful. And so I’d like to offer some of my new
bruchas to you now for your contemplaon and consideraon. Feel free to
use any of them that especially touch you. Because my Hebrew is a bit rusty,
I hope you’ll forgive me for doing the difficult bits in English.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … Praise to you, our G-d,
Sovereign of the universe for surrounding me with funny and loving family
and friends. I’ve needed them more than ever lately. Cont. on page 3

Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … Praise to you, our G-d, Sovereign of the universe creator of the Fruit
of the Loom. Stretchy, co?ony, comfort.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for making me a straight, white, man for I am not strong enough to be
gay, or a person of color, or a woman in today’s world.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for sustaining the New York Times and NPR
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for making me a nebbish, so that, in conjuncon with my doctor, Dr.
Webb, MD, dot com, I may catalog 38 aches and ailments that are not cancer, or lupus, or the result of consuming poi-
sonous mushrooms.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for matching me with a very paent wife.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for the giB of NeClix.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for causing me to shrink at a rate exactly the same as the rate of
shrinkage of airline passenger seats.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam …for placing me in a community of people who understand and appreci-
ate my humor.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam …for making me oblivious to the polite suffering of others.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for a mother who taught me the art of kvetching. She taught me so
well that I could have been a major league kvetcher. And now, playing kvetcher for the Kansas City Machers, Jordan

Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for making McCormick Bac’n Bits kosher. It’s true! They are!
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … who, in your infinite wisdom took Princess Leia from us but gave us
Wonder Woman.
And while we’re at it - Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for Meryl Streep. Everything she touches –
magnificent!

Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for the giB of me made possible by Hello Fresh. Which all too oBen
comes to be known in our household as “Goodbye Rancid”
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for delivering unto us pizza.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for making me president of the LJCC board, thus ensuring my name is
inscribed in the book of life for the coming year.
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for the understanding that you created the world using only small
things
that indeed, there really are no big things, good or bad
that a war is the inflicon of many individual injuries and deaths
that peace is the pracce of many acts of resoluon and mercy
that a disaster is the damage or destrucon of many separate homes and buildings and lives
that an elecon is the accumulaon of many single decisions
that an economy is the aggregate acvity of many discrete transacons
that the world is the gathering of many unique lives at a unique me
that a community is the many instances of sharing and receiving
that the future is the projecon of many personal despairs and hopes
that history is the curaon of many personal memories
that all the books and music that I love were created with just 26 le?ers and 12 notes
that all the wisdom in the Torah and Talmud was communicated with just 22 le?ers
that the instrucons for all living things on Earth that ever were or are can be understood using just four
molecules
that everything in the universe is made from just three kinds of atomic parcles
that repentance is just two acts, both to be done with sincere remorse – one to put right that which was
wrong, one to seek forgiveness
that eternity is just the passage of each moment
Baruch atah Adonai, Elohainu melech ha olam … for the understanding that you created the world using only small
things so that each of us may make a difference and find happiness in our own way.
May 5778 be a year full of small, construcve differences and accumulang happiness for each of you.
