Dear Arts Center friends,This morning, I sat in our theater to watch award-winning pianist Zhou Yang Mingtian perform for a special audience of our Arts-Based Preschoolers and children from Head Start. Joining the children on stage when Ric Averill and Mingtian invited them to dance to a Chopin waltz, I saw their faces reflected in the surface of our shiny Steinway as they danced around Ric, the piano, and set pieces for our production of The Nervous Set. At the same time, ceramics artists from around the country were assembling throughout the Arts Center as our biennial national Ceramics Symposium, directed by Ben Ahlvers and Mar-garet Weisbrod Morris, was about to get underway. So many times, in a single day like this one, the best of our exhibitions, performance, and education programs converge in moments that are about artistic excellence and support as much as for children from all backgrounds. Thank you for making it all possible. Your ideas, time, energy, and expertise make the Lawrence Arts Center hum. Your financial support is essential, as is your participation in planning, conversation, art talks, films, classes, Final Fridays, and more. Please join us in 2015 in our audiences or on stage, in studios and in galleries. Sincerely,

from the director

Art Place America: 9th Street Corridor Project: ArtPlace America is a collaboration of national foundations and the National Endow-ment for the Arts to accelerate creative placemaking across the U.S. A major ArtPlace grant to the Lawrence Arts Center, in

combination with a match by the City of Lawrence, will turn 9th Street between Delaware and Massachusetts into a multi-modal avenue with public art. The project will also transform 9th Street into a Complete Street, a street that is planned, designed and operated with all users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, transit riders and neighbors of all ages and abilities – in mind. The project follows a new model of artist-led street renovation that actively involves the community in the design, engineering, and construction of urban pathways. For updates on the project, visit: www.lawrenceks.org/9th-street-corridor-project.

This caring, thoughtful early education environment nurtures creative thinking, decision-making, imagination, and cultural awareness. Music, sculpture, painting, drawing, and creative movement are an integral part of this award-winning program focused on social, motor, and creative development within a sound preschool curriculum. S C H O O L ’ S O U T ? I T S T I M E F O R A R T S P A C E ! The Lawrence Arts Center leads the way in taking STEM to STEAM. In 2009, the White House and the US Department of Education challenged the nation to find inno-vative, rigorous ways to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to youth. Acknowledging the vital role art has in teaching innovative and creative thinking, the Art Space program places the Lawrence Arts Center at the epicenter of the movement to add an “A” for “art,” turning STEM into STEAM.

Art Space is the integrated visual art and science program for students 1st -5th grades. Based on the idea that critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to innovate are essential skills in all educational environments, Arts Space is an inspired learning environment in which students try new things, test the limits of their imaginations, practice innovation, and build creative connections.

Art Space camps and classes focus on a key principle of art and connect art concepts with scientific concepts, under a cultural theme relevant to young people. This integrated science and art curriculum meets national art and science standards and was developed for the program through a grant from the Elizabeth Schultz Foun-dation of the Douglas County Community Foundation, Tradewind Energy, Enel Green Power, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the Hearst Foundation and Terracon.

KIRK CARSON, THE EAST HILL SINGERS’ CONDUCTOR AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, LEADS THE SINGERS during a rehearsal Tuesday at the Lansing Correctional Facility. The group, made up of inmates, gives performances throughout the area and will be singing at 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St.

SINGINGfor a second chanceLarry Swinson, a slight, 75-year-

old retiree, regularly slides into church pews at Lansing

Correctional Facility between much burlier, blue-uniformed men with more tattoos and less singing experience.

The Lawrence resident has been volunteering five years for the East Hill Singers prison chorus, where having a guy in the mix who once carried tunes in barbershop quar-tets can only help when it comes to staying on key.

Perhaps his most disquieting mo-ment happened a few years ago at the finale of an off-prison perfor-mance when, as audience members smiled and clapped, an inmate standing next to Swinson leaned

over and whispered a confession.“He had tears in his eyes,”

Swinson says. “He said, ‘Nobody ever applauded for me before.’ It brought tears to my eyes, too.”

That memory stuck with Swin-

son and helps inspire him to keep working with the East Hill Singers. The chorus of minimum-security inmates, organized through the Arts in Prison program, leaves the prison to perform four times a year, and their last performance of this year will be today at First United Methodist Church in Law-rence.
