Welcome to the 2009 Better Lawns and Gutters Tour sponsored by the Dane County Lakes and Watershed Commission. We thank our partners for their collaboration in planning this event: City of Fitchburg, Madison Audubon Society, Wild ones and Healthy Lawn Team. The tour includes nine sites in the city of Fitchburg.

What do native plants and rain gardens have to do with water quality? Both are beautiful, low maintenance ways for reducing stormwater runoff and the amount of nutrients, chemicals and other pollutants that are carried from our lawns, gutters and streets into our lakes and streams.

The tour information center is located at the Fitchburg Community Center, 5510 Lacy road, and features ideas on how to beautify your landscape, save time and money on maintenance, attract wildlife and help our environment.

We thank the home owners, businesses and others who have welcomed us into their gardens as well as you, our “tourists,” for taking time to learn more about these simple, effective and beautiful solutions. Together, we can all make a difference in the quality of life here in Dane County, not just for us, but for generations to come.

Native plants can successfully replace all or part of a traditional

lawn. Native plants are hardy, low-maintenance and a delight to the

senses. They do not require frequent mowing and watering that traditional lawns do. When the weather gets dry, native plants are one of the few green

things in yards, because their roots go so deep. They are better suited to this climate and can withstand

periods of drought.

Rain gardens are landscaped areas that are usually positioned near

downspouts or in low-lying areas to help keep rain where it falls. By

allowing stormwater to soak into the ground rather than becoming

runoff, rain gardens cut down on the untreated stormwater that makes its way—along with the sediment, fertilizer, oil, pet waste and other

pollutants it carries—to our lakes, rivers and wetlands.

Rain barrels are an old idea made new again. They help conserve water, help decrease groundwater demand,

and, in the long run, they help save a great deal on infrastructure

costs (fewer new wells, pumping stations and treatment facilities).

Collecting and using rainwater helps our lakes and streams, because

stormwater would otherwise run off into the storm sewers, carrying with

it pollutants such as oil, bacteria, nutrients and more directly to lakes

and streams. And, plants prefer rain water to city water.
