Professor Vaver is the Professor of IntellectualProperty & Information Technology Law at the University ofOxford and Director of the Oxford Intellectual PropertyResearch Centre at St Peter's College, Oxford. Before heassumed his chair in 1998, he was based at Osgoode Hall LawSchool in Toronto, where he was a Professor of Law. He wasalso previously on the Faculty of Law at the University ofBritish Columbia and at the University of Auckland. The Symposia markthe start of the International Intellectual PropertySummer School, an annual programme run jointly bythe Oxford Intellectual Property Research Centre at St. Peter’s College, Oxford, the University of Victoria,Faculty of Law (Canada), and the University of IllinoisCollege of Law.

We are proud to offer a unique programme over thesetwo days on a variety of critical intellectual propertytopics. The distinguished speakers come from thejudiciary, from the world of legal practice and fromacademia to discuss trends and developments in thisfield from their particular experience and perspective.

Professor Robert Howell has been with the Faculty of Law at

the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada since

1980. He specializes in intellectual property law, private

international law (conflict of laws), telecommunications law

and the law and policies concerning the managing and

marketing of intellectual property and related rights. He has

published nationally and internationally in these fields and

those of private international law and competition law to the

extent that these areas concern intellectual property law. In

1999 he published (with Vincent and Manson) Intellectual

Property law, Cases and Materials and in 2002 he produced

his 2nd edition of “Database Protection and Canadian Law”

for the Canadian Federal department of Canadian Heritage.

He is currently completing a text on telecommunications law

in Canada including the law as applied to the Internet. He

has organized and participated in national and international

conferences and (from 1997) summer Intellectual Property

Programs. The current summer International Intellectual

Property program has received the Canadian Association of

University Continuing Education (CAUCE) 2002 Award for

the best international program.

“Pharmaceutical Patents in the United States: Their Scopeand Their Infringement.”

Professor Jay Kesan’s academic interests are focused in thearea of intellectual property, specifically patent law, and lawand technology. He received his J.D. from GeorgetownUniversity. After graduation, he clerked for Judge PatrickE.Higginbotham of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the FifthCircuit. Professor Kesan also holds a Ph.D. in electrical andcomputer engineering and has worked as a research scien-tist at the IBM T.J.Watson Research Center in New York. Heis a registered patent attorney and practiced at the law firmof Pennie & Edmonds LLP in the areas of patent litigationand patent prosecution. In addition, he has publishednumerous scientific papers and obtained several patents inthe U.S. and abroad.

Dr Tanya Aplin is a Lecturer in Law at King’s CollegeLondon. She was formerly a Lecturer at Robinson College,University of Cambridge. She is a graduate of MurdochUniversity, Western Australia and the University of Oxford.Dr Aplin teaches courses on UK copyright law, comparativecopyright law, patent law, breach of confidence and legal reg-ulation of the music industry. Her research is in intellectualproperty law, particularly its relationship to new technolo-gies. “Enforcement and Anti-Counterfeit Measures in the EU”

Stuart Adams is a UK qualified solicitor and trade mark agent.

Having originally qualified as a barrister in London, he start-ed his intellectual property career in 1987 at the pharmaceu-tical company, The Wellcome Foundation Ltd (nowGlaxoSmithKline), where he spent much of his time fightingcounterfeits and infringements around the world.

In 1992 he joined the London based solicitors practise, Rouse& Co, a young, specialist firm handling only intellectualproperty work. In April 1997 he set up Rouse & Co.’s Dubaioffice from where he assisted clients in the management andenforcement of their IP rights throughout the Middle East,Africa and the Indian Sub-continent. He moved back to theUK in April 2001.

He is now the Deputy Chief Executive of Rouse & Co.International Limited and is the global head of the firm’senforcement practice. He has managed enforcement actionsin over 70 countries.

Ian was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Trade MarkAttorneys in 1995. After a spell in private practice in Scotland,Ian joined Eric Potter Clarkson in 1991 and became a partnerin 1992. He joined the Board of Management in 2000.

Ronald E. Dimock is a partner of the law firm DimockStratton LLP in Toronto, Canada. As a lawyer since 1976, hehas been certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as aSpecialist in Civil Litigation and in IP (Patent, Trade-Marksand Copyright) Law. As a student, he graduated fromQueen's University law school in 1974 after obtaining anengineering degree in 1971. As a lecturer, he teaches a post-graduate level course on IP Remedies and several under-graduate classes in Patents and Copyright. Mr. Dimock hasspoken often and written many articles on IP and is theEditor of the loose-leaf book entitled ‘IP Disputes’ byCarswell-Thomson and the Editor-in-Chief of the FederatedPress – IP Quarterly.

“Going Global: Key Trademark Issues”

Jeffery A. Handelman is chair of the Trademark PracticeGroup at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largestintellectual property specialty firms in the country withapproximately 150 attorneys.

Within his primary practice area of intellectual property law,Mr. Handelman focuses on trademark, unfair competition,trade dress, dilution, false advertising, copyright, trade secret,and licensing matters. He also is involved in Internet-relatedlitigation and counseling.

Throughout his career, Mr. Handelman has gained extensivelitigation experience in Federal Court and before the U.S.Patent and Trademark Office. He has presented oralarguments in trademark cases before the U.S. Courts ofAppeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Eleventh Circuit, theFederal Circuit, various U.S. District Courts, and theTrademark Trial and Appeal Board.

Dr Paul Leonard is the Director of the Intellectual PropertyInstitute, London. Paul began his career as a research bio-chemist. He worked for BDH Ltd., Merck Ltd. and theChemical Industries Association, where he developed hisinterest in IP law. He was appointed Director of the IPInstitute in 2000. Paul retains an interest in chemical researchand has served as a member of the RAE Panel for Chemistry.He was also a member of the Chemicals Foresight Panel. Mike Manson's practice covers all areas of intellectual prop-erty law, primarily in litigation. He has appeared as counselin numerous patent, trademark, industrial design and copy-right proceedings before the Federal Court of Canada, theSupreme Court of Ontario and the British ColumbiaSupreme Court. He also has extensive involvement withtrademark filing and prosecution, both domestic and foreign,trademark oppositions, licensing and opinion work.

Called to the Ontario and British Columbia Bars, Mr.Manson has a B.Sc. (Biology) and Teaching Diploma fromMcGill University and an LL.B. from the University of BritishColumbia. A. David Morrow has extensive involvement with trademarkfiling and prosecution, both domestic and foreign; trademarkoppositions; licensing; and opinions and advice regarding theobtaining, maintenance and validity of all types of intellectu-al property. He has a B.Sc. in Physics from CarletonUniversity and an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa. Amember of the Ontario Bar, he is also a Canadian and U.S.registered patent agent and trademark agent certified by theLaw Society of Upper Canada as a specialist in intellectualproperty (patents, trademarks and copyright) law. Shireen Peermohamed is Managing Partner of Willoughby &Partners and an Executive of Rouse & Co International. Aftergraduating from Oxford University, she trained at CliffordChance and qualified into the IP department in 1989. Shemoved to Ashurst Morris Crisp in 1994 and joined Willoughby& Partners in 1997. Shireen is experienced in contentious andnon-contentious IP in a wide range of industry areas and hasclients in a number of jurisdictions. She handles trade markinfringement, passing off, copyright and patent infringementproceedings for clients in the personal care,telecommunications and engineering sectors and advisesclients on parallel imports, licensing and merchandisingarrangements. Tim joinedthe patents profession in 1986, qualifying as a Chartered PatentAttorney, European Patent Attorney and Registered Trade MarkAttorney in 1991.

After ten years practising in London, Tim joined Eric PotterPCin 1995 and became a partner in 1997. He represents clientsactive mainly in oilfield equipment, metallurgy, consumergoods, electronic component and process plant technologies.

Tim has travelled extensively, especially in Asia and the USA.He has presented papers on aspects of intellectual property tonumerous universities; to the UK Law Society; and tointernational audiences in the USA, Korea, Japan and Belgiumamong others.

Tim has spent the last two years studying for an LLM inintellectual property litigation at Nottingham Law School.

He is also a Council Member of the European Patents Institute,is active on committees of that Institute and of the UK'sChartered Institute of Patent Agents (CIPA) and is a Member ofthe Patent Agent Litigator's’ Society.

Rajesh Sagar is pursuing his PhD since 2003 at Queen MaryIntellectual Property Research Institute, UK (QMIPRI) focus-ing on Intellectual Property Law paradigm in India, after suc-cessfully completing his LL.M. from the University ofCambridge. His primary interest areas are Patent Law,Biodiversity Law, Traditional Knowledge protection andintellectual property law in developing countries. He has pre-sented a paper titled “Exclusive privilege law in colonialIndia” in ESRC Conference held in November, 2004 andorganized by QMIPRI. He has also co-authored a reporttitled “Ownership of employee inventions and remuneration:A comparative overview” with Mr. Aditya Nagarsheth. He iscurrently working on various research projects in QMIPRIapart from his doctorate studies.

Allan is a member of theIllinois Trial Bar, has acted as an expert witness and as amediator in patent disputes, and has taught classes, authoredand lectured on patent litigation, patent damages, patent law,patent prosecution, and licensing.

Allan has a B.Sc. (Hons) in Aeronautical and AstronauticalEngineering from the University of Illinois, an M.S.E. fromthe University of Michigan and a J.D. from Loyola University.

He then qualified as a solicitor with London-based lawfirm Linklaters, including time on secondment to the EuropeanCommission in Brussels, Belgium.
