Rece ived Ap ri l 10, 1992This paper describes the theory of the actor-network, a body o f theoretical andempirical writing wh ich treats social relations, including po w er and organization, asnetwork effects. T he theory is distinctive because it insists that networks are ma teriallyheterogeneous and argues that society and organization would not exist if they weresimply social. Agents, texts, devices, architectures are all generated in, form part of,and are essential to, the networks of the social. And in the first instance, all shouldbe analyzed in the same terms. According ly, in this view , the task of sociology is tocharacterize the ways in which materials join together to generate themselves andreproduce institutional and organizational patterns in the networks o f the social.K E Y W O R D S : actor network; translation; heterogeneity; agency; technology; strat-eg y; ordering; punctualization; pow er; materialism.
