Outstanding Plants for Alameda County Lavandula spp. Lavender Lavandula spp. Shrubby perennial with aromatic gray green leaves and spikes of aromatic purple flowers excellent in potpourri. Requires little water once established and will tolerate light frosts. Cut back after bloom in spring and shape plant to encourage branching and compact growth . Avoid cutting into woody part of plant when pruning. Prefers well drained soil. Avoid mulching close to stem. Excellent addition to low water, low maintenance gardens. Suggested varieties: L. augustifolia English lavender (tall stems); L. dentata French lavender (long bloom); L. stoechas Spanish lavender (good near coast); Lavandula 'Goodwin Creek Grey' Other: Good drainage. Attracts butterflies and bees.
