Dear Citizens and Visitors,
Today we commemorate the birth of our Nation; a time when our founding fathers released an intan-gible power the likes of which has not been seen before. Independence, that thing which we feel so strongly, borne on the winds of change which swept over the original thirteen colo-
nies has become the hallmark of this nation. For over two hun-
dred years we have pros-pered, strug-gled,
suffered tragedy, fought wars, and enjoyed the fruits of great accom-plishments, lasting friendships, and wonderful memories.
Today is a day to celebrate that greatness, that uniqueness, and to reflect on what it takes to sustain this democracy. Today is not for partisan politics or for talking about red or blue states. Today is a day for being thankful that we are free Americans. Free to pursue “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. These words may mean different things to differ-ent people. That is okay. I believe the Nation’s founders had the faith that future generations would figure out what is best for the majority while protecting the rights of minori-ties.
The Celebration starts with musi-cal entertainment by the band “Over Time” in Janosik Park the evening of July 3rd. Admission is free and food and beverages will be available. On the Fourth, enjoy the parade, the car-nival with its rides and challenging games, and sample the delicacies at one of the event’s food vendors. The Bo Dickerson Band and the Elwood Band will entertain you in rousing, foot stomping fashion.
At dusk you will be treated to the one of the best fireworks displays on Delmarva.
Visitors – check us out! You will find why almost 4000 people are proud to call Laurel “home”.
Have a great time celebrating In-dependence Day!
Town of Laurel welcomes you

The Town of Laurel is prepar-ing for its 19th annual Fourth of July community celebration. The holiday festival brings thousands of visitors to Laurel and helps to promote its quaint, hometown setting while helping to boost the local economy.
Throughout Laurel, especially its central downtown area, visi-tors will find a patriotic theme accompanied by a variety of food and specialty vendors.
The town has taken the lead-ership of the Fourth of July com-munity event for the past few
years after the Laurel Chamber of Commerce passed the torch in favor of focusing its efforts more exclusively on helping to support and grow local business.
The order of business un-dertaken by the town came as Mayor John Shwed led an effort to preserve the familiar tradition of the celebration, the fireworks display.
The cost of the display, which hovers around $15,000, became the most cost-concerning part of the celebration. Shwed was able to gain the support of his col-leagues on the council to solicit the Laurel community in helping
to pay for the fireworks. In a good-faith gesture,
Shwed and the council agreed to pay for the fireworks, a detail that had to be addressed contrac-tually far in advance of the July 4 event, out of the town budget.
Thus far, public contribu-tions placed in store canisters throughout the town have been able to cover the costs. This year appears to be no exception as financial forecasts of about a month ago found contributions have reached close to the solici-tation goal.
Shwed is hoping that the pub-lic will continue to donate when

they see the fireworks canisters in stores and ensure that the goal will be reached.
Laurel Operations Manager, Jamie Smith, has spearheaded the coordina-tion of the July Fourth event since the town assumed sponsorship and promises that this year’s event will be every bit as full of family-fun and va-riety as people have come to expect. The activities scheduled for this year’s event include:
There will be a special kick-off party to be held in Janosik Park from 7 to 10 p.m., Wednesday, July 3. The event will feature music from the band “Overtime,” and admission is free. Food and beverages will be on sale during the event.
On the morning of July 4, a special Prayer Break-fast will be held at the
Georgia House restaurant beginning at 7:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Laurel Ministerial Associa-tion.
At 10 a.m. the annual July 4 parade will be held
with a theme of “Hat’s Off to America.” The parade will start at Evergreen Drive and move along Central Avenue to Mary-land Avenue. Also starting at 10 a.m. and running
through 2 p.m. is a Car Show held along Front Street. Entrants in the Car Show can show up in the morning and pay a $10 entrance fee.

Recreation in Laurel centers on water. More specifically, the waters of the Nanticoke River wa-tershed, which are contained in the numerous ponds and creeks that flow through the area.
Recreation opportunities begin at Trap Pond State Park, one of the oldest state parks in Delaware.
Trap Pond, and nearby Trussum Pond, are home to the northern-most natural stand of baldcypress trees in North America.
Two of the trees in that stand are the largest trees in Delaware. Forestry officials estimate the age of one of those trees to be 750 years.
Trap Pond was created in the late 1700s to power a sawmill during the harvest of large baldcy-press from the area.
The Federal Government pur-
chased the pond and surrounding farmland during the 1930s and the Civilian Conservation Corps began to develop the area for recreation. Trap Pond became one of Dela-ware’s first state parks in 1951.
Before the pond was created, the area was home to freshwater wetlands, some of which still sur-vive in the park.
Wooden walkways allow visi-tors to explore the wetlands, as well as the surrounding forest.
The 4.9-mile Boundary Trail circles the park’s 90-acre pond. There are also bike trails and horse trails.
A treat for bird watchers, the park is home to great blue herons, owls, hummingbirds, warblers, bald eagles and pileated wood-peckers.
For those who prefer a more watery experience, rowboats, pedal boats, surf bikes, canoes
and kayaks are available for rental at the park. In addition, the park interpreter holds narrated pontoon boat tours on summer weekends and holidays.
One of the streams that flows into Trap Pond has been marked as a wilderness canoe trail, giv-ing another access to the swamp’s interior.
A boat launching ramp can ac-commodate small motorized boats; anglers on the water or shore have been known to land largemouth bass, pickerel, crappie and blue-gills.
The park is also home to the Baldcypress Nature Center, which features a variety of displays and programs.
Picnic areas overlook the pond and three pavilions may be re-served for group events. There are volleyball courts and horseshoe pits, as well as a playground and

In addition to the 73-acre Trus-sum Pond and Trap Pond, there are several boat launching areas along Broad Creek and its associated ponds.
The 52-acre Chipman Pond has a
boat launch, as do the 46-acre Hors-ey Pond and the 92-acre Records Pond, where there is also a ramp that is accessible to the handicapped.
While there is no boat ramp, bank fishing is available at the 14-acre Raccoon Pond.
Phillip’s Landing, just west of the confluence of Broad Creek and the
Nanticoke, has three boat ramps, all accessible to the handicapped.
In the heart of Laurel, the fishing area on Broad Creek has one fishing pier, accessible to the handicapped with assistance.
Laurel is home to many historic houses and to Old Christ Church, which was completed in 1772.

Special Thanks
A special thanks to The Bo Dickerson Band and The Elwood Band for donating your time, talent and entertainment.
Also, very special thanks to John Theofiles, Lori Short, Karin D’Armi Hunt, Brent Boyce, Holly Hannigan, Bob & Cheryl Jones, Carol Warrington Dennis O’Neal, Laurel Community Foundation, and judges of the events. Each played a tremendous part in making the 19th Annual Independence Day Celebration a success, which could not have been accomplished without their generous donation of time, talent, materials, and expe-rience.
Thank You!
