e recognise the cultural diversity of our people in the South Pacific Division and the

different cli!atic 7ones in which we live 8 fro! the tropics to places which have ice$ snowand frost in winter. These factors influence the type of clothing worn and different laundering

    techni+ues.

e believe that the wisest approach to this honour is to present the ,broad picture.

&ou !ay find re+uire!ents that are of little relevance to you current laundering needs. 4iven

the way we ,run to and fro these days$ we ask you to persevere and give your students a good

general knowledge of the sub9ect. e rely on your co!!on sense and 9udge!ent.

    R$%&IR$M$NT 9( )hat precautions should *e taken when using fa*ric softeners+

i+uid fabric softeners leave an invisible residue on the gar!ents which prevents

static cling$ softens the fabric$ and i!parts a light fragrance. ;t should only be used in

the rinse cycle when no soap is present in the water$ because it will react with soap and

leaving a sticky$ visible residue which rese!bles lint. ;f your washing !achine has afabric softener dispenser use it and the fabric softener will be added at the right ti!e in

the cycle. =therwise$ you !ust add it yourself at the beginning of the rinse cycle. 1e

careful to not pour it directly on clothing$ but rather into the water.

R$%&IR$M$NT :0 )hat points are to *e considered in selecting a washing machine2

ironing machine2 drer2 iron+ How should these laundr implements *e cared

    for+

The pri!ary concern when selecting a washing !achine or a dryer is financial.*e!e!ber that the initial cost of the appliance is only a part of its operating cost

though. 1uying an energy efficient appliance - even if it is !ore e"pensive - can save

you a lot of !oney in the long run.

Another factor to consider is the a!ount of laundry you intend to do with the

appliances. ;f you are going to do laundry for a fa!ily of si"$ you will need a larger

!achine than if you are going to do laundry for a fa!ily of two.

hen selecting an iron$ look for features that enhance safety. Iany irons today will

shut the!selves off auto!atically if left idling for too long.

ipe down your appliances regularly$ and use appliance touch-up paint to repair any

chips in the finish. An untreated chip will lead to rust which can destroy your

appliance. Also be sure to clean out the lint trap of your dryer between every load$ and

clean the e"haust duct regularly. int build-up in the e"haust duct is a fire ha7ard.

Do not iron over silkscreen designs$ as this will !elt the paint on the gar!ent and

stick to the iron. This residue is e"tre!ely difficult to re!ove fro! an iron$ and if left

there$ will transfer to any other gar!ents you use it on.

    Laundering HonourR$%&IR$M$NT =0 6now how to remo,e stains( ink2 fruit2 rust2 grass2 cocoa2 grease2

    *lood2 chewing gum0 )h must stains *e remo,ed *efore laundering+

Ink( Place a paper towel under the stain and then spray the stain with hairspray.

Hairspray breaks up !any type of ink$ and you will want the paper towel there to

catch the ink and not allow it to stain another part of the gar!ent. Hairspray !ay

discolour the fabric though$ so test in an inconspicuous place first.

    >ruit( Try to re!ove the stain before it dries by rinsing it in cold water. =therwise$

soak white gar!ents in a chlorinated bleach solution. 0or coloured gar!ents$ treat

with sodiu! percarbonate or a war! bora" solution.

?rape fruit( 1lot the stain first to re!ove any 9uice that:s still there. Then lightly dab

    the stain with cold water.

Rust( Sprinkle the stain with salt and rub it in. Then wet it with le!on 9uice and place

it in the sun. Leep the stain !oistened with le!on 9uice until the stain disappears.

?rass( ;f the gar!ent is white$ you !ay soak it in a solution of chlorinated bleach$

then rinse and launder. =therwise$ apply !ethylate alcohol 'wood alcohol( to the stain$

rinse in war! water$ and then wash.

?rease( Scrape away as !uch of the grease as you can. *ub petroleu! 9elly into the

stain$ and then wash with a laundry powder or li+uid detergent. &ou can also try a spot

    re!oving product.

!lood( ;f the blood is fresh$ wipe it up with a sponge soaked in cool$ salted water.

Then rinse with clear water. ;f the blood is dried$ use diluted hydrogen pero"ide 'one

     part pero"ide$ nine parts water(.

Chewing gum( Scrape off as !uch as possible first. This is easier if you cool the gu!

down with ice cubes first$ as that !akes the gu! brittle rather than gu!!y. ;f the ite!

is washable$ apply a little kerosene or dry cleaning fluid and rinse it off. &ou !ay have

    to repeat this several ti!es.

Craons( Place the stained ite! in the free7er and leave it there until the crayon

free7es. &ou can then literally break the crayon stain out of the gar!ent. ;f there is any

residue left after this$ place the ite! on a paper towel or a blotter. Then place a second paper towel 'or blotter( on top of the ite!. Apply a war! iron. This will !elt the

crayon$ and the paper towels should soak up the stain. %hange the paper towels as

    often as is necessary.

    )h must stains *e remo,ed *efore laundering+

Putting a stained gar!ent in a washing !achine or dryer will set the stain$ !aking it

even !ore difficult to re!ove. Always re!ove stains before laundering.
