What an exciting challenge we have ahead, with the upcoming launch of The Esk Art Award on Friday, 13th April. The sponsorship LAS has received for this major exhibition has been wonderful. Eskleigh is supporting us in so many other ways, over and above underwriting our major prize.

Other companies big and small have been very generous. Go to our Facebook page to see the full list of sponsors. Importantly, please share our page with your friends. This works exponentially and is so valuable for promoting artists. Remember, delivery days are from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd of March. Monday 19th is a significant date for other reasons - it is also Launceston Art Society’s AGM and Meet and Greet.

NEVER FEAR, no-one is going to rope you into a position on the board, just because you spare less than an hour to be there! But of course, if you are interested in joining the committee, we would genuinely like to hear from you. Nominations forms will be available on the day. Please feel free to call me on 0418 281 697 if you would like to discuss becoming a committee member. Meanwhile, don’t be surprised that if you do attend, you actually enjoy the experience!

It’s a great ‘Catch Up’ time, or if you are a new member, it’s a perfect opportunity to meet other members, new and old. As you browse through our great little Art Beat magazine, spare a thought for the editor, Pauline Winwood and our graphic designer Ray Pethick. Both these members spend hours and hours pulling together the contents and presenting the information in an attractive format. If you would like to contribute in any way, simply email your contribution to: [email protected]. Read your Art Beat carefully, especially when you are seeking specific information. It is a fairly unusual oversight, if all you need to know, is not included in the various articles. Should this happen, there is always a page which lists all the committee members,

PS. I just can’t resist including these computer quotes to which I am sure many of us can relate: "Never trust a computer that you can’t throw out a window". Steve Wozniak Co-founder of Apple

"Computers are useless. They can only give you answers". Pablo Picasso 1881 -1973 (Yes, computers were even around in Picasso’s day!)

their specific roles and their contact details. The method of payment for various events is listed in every edition of Art Beat and often extra information is included either as a form or as an additional flyer. Well, enough of the lecturing. I hope autumn inspires your creativity and you are free to produce some satisfying works of art. Carolyn

GREATER WESTERN T IER SART AWARD

Award Winners Judges comments accompany images of each winning work.

Major Award sponsored by the Meander Valley Council Won by Pauline Winwood with a watercolour, ‘Three Tiers’• The artist addressed the theme in her statement and showed a competent control of watercolour using soft and hard edges. The colours complement one another and the composition showed the mountains moving around to different locations, reinforced by the addition of co-ordinates.

Essence of the Valley Award sponsored by 6ty° Won by Brad Quinn with an oil on board, ‘Tractor, Quamby Bluff’• Using Quamby Bluff as a moving backdrop to the Meander Valley addresses the theme. A good use of colour and a composition involving horizontal and vertical elements leading the eye of the viewer to the mountain.

Highly Commended Award #1 sponsored by Great Western Tiers Tourism Association. Won by Darren Meader with an oil on board, ‘Movement and Decay on Quamby Bluff’• Clever interpretation of the theme. Good use of colour, demonstrating foreground, middle ground and background and confident brushstrokes giving the impression of forest vegetation.

Highly Commended Award #2 sponsored by Bendigo Bank. Won by Lynne Hutchins with a pastel, ‘Moving Mountains of Hay’• A different interpretation of moving mountains. Competent use of the medium and a good composition.

Encouragement Award sponsored by Launceston Art Society. Won by Louise Skabo with a watercolour, ‘Basil Steers Hut #1’• The artist’s statement is a metaphor which is another interpretation of the theme. The background captures the atmosphere of the remote environment.

WORKSHOPREPORT

Rachel’s knowledge is astonishing and she began teaching the secrets of sketching and drawing. She held this class – mesmerised – with the different ways to sketch with charcoal / pencil. Some of the participants had not used charcoal before but became very used to this soft medium, very quickly. Pears were used to copy and sketch - to start with. Pears make a great subject and are nice to eat afterwards…… Everyone’s individual interpretation of the pear was indeed wonderful! It was one of the hottest days

here in Launceston, Saturday, 27th January and it was the day of Rachel Howell’s one day workshop. Fans were installed at Eskleigh, for the comfort and satisfaction of our 17 participants who attended this wonderful workshop. The coolness of the room lasted until about 4.00pm - and then the heat turned up a notch…. but that was OK - it was the time that everyone went home.

Rachel covered many different subjects and landscape/buildings - were particular favourites. This too was one of the exercises that everyone drew and they nailed it all beautifully. The day went very quickly and there was a lot of knowledge imparted to everyone by Rachel. She taught with kindness and humour. She was very thorough in covering all aspects of her subject matter. She is a lovely teacher!

Aileen Gough catered delicious morning and afternoon teas for the group and everyone was commenting on what a wonderful time they had at Eskleigh.
