and real eager to learn. Gordon Nelson and Iwent there for a total of a week from November 5 to 14. Iwas there fthe first half oftheweekandtaught every evening onPhilippians andColossians. Gordon cameonWednesday andtaugabout the lives of the 12 Apostles. I had 17 people gain credit while he had 18. When we go there, the families takturns feeding useach nightand in being ourhosts. During the day, Ispoke at two high schools inthe area and was vewell received. The only drawbackto the tripwas having to go by myself as Fran and Denzil stayedbehind. Itruly enjoyemy trip to workwith these fine peopleand feel like the Lord is using us in Cape Bible Seminary to make better leadefo r the churches.

VisitorsWhen we first arrived in South Africa, wewere truly amazed at the beauty of this country, asCape Town is rated to

be one of the top 5 most beautifulcitiesin the world. Another thing that we were amazed at when we arrived was thelack of foreign touriststo cometo this place as only British Airways flewoverseasto CapeTown. Since sanctions havefallen andthe country has changed, airlines come from all over theworld here. There areevendirect flights from Miamito Cape Town. One leaves here on Saturday evening at 9:00 local time and arrives in Miami at 5:30 local time.

One of the decisions that we made a long timeago, was that our house isthe Lord's house and isalways open tovisitors, local orotherwise. Sadto say, many missionaries havethe attitude that theywant novisitors. Wehaveevenhadmissionaries tell Fran and methat ifother local missionaries cometo Cape Town, There isnot a chance theyare stayingwith me; they can stay with you!" We feel that that attitude is not only Inhospitable, but unchristian.Besideslocalpeople likeAndrew Calvert

were visiting, strawberries were in seasonand Ithink that the shops took a loss with Bev PalmerUncle Bev here. We wen t to services a tMacassar and Mfuleni and had a braai here at the house on November 27 with 65 people in attendance. Before theyleft for Canada on the 28th, we took them to the various sight-seeing places in and around Cape Town.

We truly enjoyvisitors and encourage anyone to come andsee us that would like to.

As you know, we love to have people in our home, so we haveenjoyed it. We especially enjoyed having Pete's relatives fromCanada. Itwas interesting havingtwo Denzils in the house. Nowwe are looking forward to Grandma Blackmarr's (Pete's Mom)arrival in February.Though we didn't have any family members with us for

Christmas, itwas a full day. We (the three of us) got up around5:00 a.m. to open the gifts. It was fun watching Denzll. Heactuallyseemed to know what was going on - maybe it comesnaturally. Then we went to church at Macassar. It was nice tobe with those folks. After church, we came home and got readyfor the +/-20 friends for dinner. Since it ishot here at Christmaswe were able to seat some outside inthe shade. There was plentyof food, fun with games and good fellowship. Christmaswas ablessed time for us, as we hope that yours was.Pete and I thank God every time we remember you all

(Philippians 1:3-6). God has blessed us through all of our friendsand family. We felt especially blessed this year inthe birth of ourson, Denzil. Pray for us as we bring him up knowing and lovingGod our Father. Lord willing, we will be back in the U.S. forfurlough very soon. Then we will meet again, face-to-face withlots to talk about.Keepwelland we pray that God will bless you as you live for

    CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRIC!Pete & Fran Laughren Vol.5. No.4 Spring 1995

End of the Second! TermAs we look over o ur s ec on d

term in South Africa, we do sowith mixed feelings. While wewould like to paint a rosy pictureabout everything that we havetried to do, we cannot. Some J ,things that we have tried haveworked with good success while iik'^iirthir ^n' i"others have not . It is th e s am e asin any work that one might do. ^ *71

Our main goal here has been ^and still is the training of leadersfor the local churches. Through Table Mountain which is the symbol ofCape Town.our extension school. Cape BibleSeminary, we are reaching people with teaching that might not be able to get it otherwise. We have travelled tooutlying areas where people have full t ime jobs and, therefore, could never go to a school on a full t ime basis. Lasyear we had over 200 people attend classes with around 150 getting at least one credit. With several aspects o

Cape Bible Seminary we are very pleased.jh e church at Macassar was started in 1992 and contin

ues to grow. The church at Mfuleni has gone through a^ couple of transitions while Bishop Lavis desperately needsour prayers. We have been able to make contact with' p several other churches in the Cape area with mixed success,

. __ . some wanting more teaching, some not. Youth groups havestarted and have either sustained or dwindled, as have

ladies classes, Bible studies and preacher training classes.Through all of these things, we never forget that God isultimately in control. Without him and what he has done forQheijS us through his Son, Jesus Christ, there would be no need forH|l|||l - JM us to be here. We know that when things do not look goodl i l for us as we see it, God already has other plans. It is his

Patrick Jantjies and LindieJantjies teaching Sunday school. power and grace that sustain US every day and we rejoice in

tha t fact .Aswe end this second term and head to the U.S. for furlough, we look forward to seeing you In person as wtravel and then we can rejoice together in the Lord that we serve wherever we are.

Fu r l o ugh P l a n sWe arrive in Atlanta on May 12 at 3:20 to start our furlough. Our plans are now to be inthe U.S. for over a yeawith one of the lastactivities planned to be a family reunion in Canada in August of 1996. Weare going to try ansee all of our supporters during this time inour travels. We will be stationed in Hampton,GA, and will travel from

there for the year. As we have supporters from Georgia to Canada to Texas, we will be busy. Please call orwritus or our forwarding agents to let us know when will be a good time to come and visit. June, July, September andother dates are already full, so please let us know.

Our thanks go to those who have already helped with our accommodation needs and furniture where we wilstay inHampton. We can never say enough thanks. Ouraddress will be P.O. Box 206, Hampton, GA 30228. Ouphone number has not yet been determined, but our forwarding agents' (Mark andAnnette Tuttle) number is404929-8539. Theywill know how to contact us. Please pray for us as we get ready for this important time and as wetravel to the U.S. in May.

Act i v i t i e s o f J a n u a r y to IVIarctiThese three months saw many varied activities. As schools did not start until late January, neither did our Biblestudy classes. In January, we met withGordon Nelson, Jerry Kennedy and Steve Zimmerman about the year's planfor Cape Bible Seminary. There would be several different sessions in varying places.February was a strange month. My mother, FIo~Blackmarr, arrived on the 6th and we were supposed to leave

to go to East London the next day. After battling flu for a week, Fran took sick the morning we were to leave andwas admitted to the hospital for 5 days. Doctors, running all sorts of tests, determined her illness to be salmonellapoisoning. Shehas recovered well, but wedid haveto cancel the CapeBible Seminary trip to East London. Needlessto say, mymother was a big helpwith Denzil during the three weeks that she was here. During her staywe wenup country for a few days of tour-

and workwith the Christians there. CrandmaBlackmarrand hergrandson.

    F r an ' s Fee l i n g sHi Folks!

We trust that all iswell with you and yours. We arethankful to God that Iam finally better. Iwas verysickfoawhile. It started with a week of flu symptoms and thenI had terrible stomach pain. I was admitted into th^hospital on February 7 early in the morning and wasdischarged on February11. Itwas a weird virusof somesort and salmonella poisoning. Ithas taken me awhile tofully recuperate, but I have.

Pete's mom, Flo Blackmarr, came here to see he"grandson inAfrica" on February 6 and left on the 25th.Itwas very nice to have her here, especially to take careofallof uswhen Iwas so sick. Denzil reallygot the speciatreatment from hisgrandma and he thrived on it. We arelooking forward to Denzil meeting the rest of his familand friends.

Since Denzilwas born, we have been on several tripsDenzil loves to be on the go and he travels so well. Thereal test will be furlough which is onlydays away nowPlease pray for us.

When furlough comes around we take a look at thepast term and evaluate our efforts, etc. I feel bad thaduring the last year and a half I have done very littleteaching. Mostof thistime has been spent on becominga mother. That isa poor reason, but Ihave enjoyed Denziso much (even while Iwas pregnant)and he does keep mebusy. It iseasier to do other things now that he isolderDuring the lapse in my teaching, the ladies class inMacassarhas ceased to meet. Theywere depending onmeand are too lazyto carryonwithout me pushingthem.Ican say "lazy," because they could carryon ifthey reallywanted to. This was a disappointment to me becausethey seemed eager.

The Friday Sunday school class at Mfuleni has beengoing on without me, off and on. Asfar as Iknow, a locabrother has been teaching them some. This was myfavorite class of children because there were always 25-

30 children, plusothers that attended from the neighborhood.

The Sunday school class Inthe middle of the week atMacassar now meetseverySunday a.m. Theywere beingtaught bytwo ofthe youth, Patrickand Lindie Jantjies, buta young married couple, Barry and Mary jantjies, havetaken over. The Sunday school has grown innumberandspirit. We are very pleased to see them carry on.During this term Ihad a great deal of Sunday schoolmaterial that has been distr ibuted. Some of it is beingused, but a great deal is not. Until Iknow for sure thatthey want more and will use It, we will not give out anymore. We willsee how it goes while we are away. Wedo appreciate you all (especially Highland MeadowsChristian Church in Texas) sending materials like weasked. We are praying that God will be able to workthrough them.

Well, I guess changes need to be made. Maybefurlough will give us some clues and help in doing justthat. Please pray about that with us.

Lordwilling, we will be seeing you soon. Take careand get in touch with us so thatwe can meet upwith yousomewhere inour travels. MayGod bless you as you livefo r Him.

    Vol. 6, No. 1 Summer 199

    F u r l o u g h Be g i n s T h e Tr ip F r am H om eOn April 21, 1995 we left Cape Town after saying goodbye to many friends at the airport. It was sad to leave

but also good to begin our long journey to the U.S. We visited three different destinations in the Far East on outrip.

The first place was Vietnam where we visited Fran's sister, Karen. She is living in Ho Chi Minh City which useto be Saigon. She is doing very well in this fascinating city. We just happened to be there during the week ocelebrations for the twentieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon. We did much sight-seeing throughout the city anenjoyed this city the most of the three that we visited.

Next, we flew to Singapore for three nights. While there, we did the usual tour ist things and enjoyed thbeautiful, hustling, bustling and hot city. The city was clean and the people very nice.

Our last stop was in Hong Kong. We stayed in Kowloon in the busy commercial part of the city for three nightsWhile there we rode out to Hong Kong Island, toured the commercial area and relaxed for our journey statewardOn May 2, we left Hong Kong at noon and flew twelve hours to San Francisco, arriving at 9:00 a.m. the samday that we left Hong Kong, thanks to the International Date Line. When we finally arrived at Denver, Denzil waconfused for several days - sleeping all day and awake all night. We spent 10 days in Wyoming with Fran's parenand sister, Sonja, so that they could do their part in spoiling Denzil. Finally on May 12 we flew to our furlough homof Hampton, Georgia where many of our friends and family met us. After a long trip it was nice to get semi-settleand we prepared for the next 12 to 15 months of furlough.

As we have not heard muchsince we left, all information thatwe have is a couple of months old.The church in Macas sar had a farewell service for us April 9 and wefelt honored. It cont inues to beth e strongest church in the CapeTown area, while there are a lot ofpower struggles at Mfuleni. BishopLaviscontinues to struggle becauseof some past decisions, but theyare surviving. Please pray for allthree of these churches.

She is living and working and a teacher of English inthe former Saigon, HoChiMinhCity. Itwas veryhot andexciting. Karen was a wonderful tour guide and we gotto havea wonderful visit with her. In September she will be getting marriedto a wonderful guy named Toai. Weare sohappy for them and pray that they willbe happy.Aftera few daysinVietnam, we flewto Singaporeand Hong Kong. Wewere typical touristsfor a few daysand lovedit. Denzil was wonderful and seems to enjoy the travelling.

Ourfirststop inthe U.S. was to visit with my folks inWyoming for ten days. Weneeded those daysto get Denzil usedto the time change. Bless his heart, he was sleeping at day and awake at night. Actually, he was not sleeping much atall. Hewanted to be awake when we were, and then he thought it was still day time at night time and could not sleepGranny and PappyHamilton had everything that we needed - bed, toys, chairs, diapers, etc. Therefore, all that Pete andI had to do was play and rest; we are in good shape now.

OnMay12we arrived inHampton, Georgia (where our furlough home is)and found that Pete'sfamilyand home churchfamily had a house furnished for us and Denzil. They had groceries, diapers, toys, linens, everything! So as you can sewe are well taken care of and we appreciate everything and everybody (family and friends).

Denzil has been quite popular on the "Here'sDenzil Tour." Hehas been sickwith a fever and virus onlyonce and thaIs great when you think of all of the changes that he has experienced. He is a happy and good baby. Now, if he wouldonly enjoy going to bed morel I

so the last three months have been enjoyable. In July, we took part in a Vacation Bible School that was held at Monrovia Christian Church in Monrovia

Indiana. Fran's sister, Sonja, organized to have several missionaries there to teach the individual classeabout the countries that they were serving. It worked very well and we enjoyed the "International VBS.After spending a week there, we went to the North American Christian Convention in Indianapolis. Whad a booth there and shared in two workshops. We saw many friends there that we had not seen in along time. The Sunday after the convention, we spoke at First Christian Church in Marshall, IllinoisFollowing the morning services, we followed the minister, Jeff Noel, to llliana Christian Assembly iWashington, Indiana to take part in the Deeper Life week of which Jeff was Dean. things about those two weeks is that when they set an offering goal, they instruct us what they would likefor us to purchase with it to help in our work. In 1990, we purchased a video camera that we are still usinghere and inSouth Africa. This year, after learning about our computer's demise, they wanted us to purchasea new one with their record offering from the week of camp. They also told us to get one that would makeit possible to go on-line with E-mail, which we plan on doing. We have been able to purchase a Gateway2000 with Windows 95 and are in the process of learning all about it.

Thanks so much to Jeff, John, Doug and all involved in this week of camp. Beyond monetaryconsiderations, we felt spiritually encouraged by all 180 campers and the subjects for the week. MayGodbless you all for your service to Him.

Karen, on herwedding day. Karen and Toai Nguyenwere married on September 24th, so we were gonefor two and a half weeks. Pete had to stay behindto fulfill a promise to the folks at HighlandMeadowChristian Church in Texas. We w ere to be in Texafor a month and be part of their Missions Fair. Iwent well and Pete had a good time except for theweek that he was sickwith the flu. Iguess he jusmissed Denzil and me too much!! Ha!

The wedding was a nice combination of anAmerican wedding and a Vietnamese wedding. Acouple of things that were funny to us were thefollowing:

    1. The master of ceremonies announced eachof us as we walked down the aisle.

    2. Ihad to carry Denzil, my purse and hisdiapebag down the aisle because we arrived late (that's along story), but I held my fan (like a bridesmaid isupposed to) in the other hand. What a sight thamust h av e been.

    3. After the wedding partywas in place, a songwas played for the bride and groom that soundedlike the tune to "Three Blind Mice" and it m ade mthinkof theThree Stooges. We were allshaking withlaughter under our breath.

chairat the reception. Itwas in slowmotion, but Iended upon the floorwith my feet and the chair going up In the air.

In spite of a few funny things, it was lovely and Iam so happy thatIhad the chance to go. Toai isa wonderful Christian man. Itwas humidand hot; it rained almost every day. My mother and Igot sickthe dayafter we got back to America, and she is still having some problems. I,though, ammuch better. Denziltravelledwelland wasn'tsickatall. Heonlygot a bump on the head from a fall against the bed while playing.

Thanks to one and all who helped to make this trip possible. Untilnext time, mayGod bless you as you serve Him. Ilookforward to seeingyou in our travels.

    Love,Fran
